A couple thoughts on my own video: 1) I understand that my final tempo is slower than needed, but maybe that's even better. I'm a slow guy and don't like to play too fast anyway. 2) I understand that I could get more "punch" by slapping the bass more instead of playing it as I do in the video, but I'm not a fan of slapping either. So I recorded a general idea that I got from the riff, I don't think that it's too off from the original, but I'm aware where it's off.

In other words, if you slap more you’ll increase the “drum kit feel” of it, might as well slap every bass note.

This is really funny, thanks for mentioning that. Yes, I think slap in general is a bit overused technique, so I agree...

@@seanylewl That's correct, i remeber seeing a inteview where he stated that and says he tries to write songs now without the use of the technique. I suppose in a band setting it just muddies the mix, but playing on your own it has a place.

that tiktok really cracked it wide open for me too. I cant believe how he just beamed the key to that technique into my head with a couple of sentences and 10 seconds of playing. He would be the best guitar teacher.

John Mayer is a very talented guitarist who can play so many different styles, also to his credit considering how much of a star he is, he's alway putting up vids and lesssons for his fans. Also if anyone here is interested in getting into listening to John's music i'd recomend you start with his live stuff, it's on another level compared to his studio releases.

Thanks for the tips and explanations! I started learning the riff like 5 days ago, mainly based on GuitarZeroToHero's tutorial (Dave's an awesome teacher and, he tabbed the whole thing OMG) But you pointed out one additional important technique he didn't, which is the False Plectrum Technique snare sound. It's something I just realised (I didn't watch JM's ticktock tips) To be honest I am not sure whether adding this technique would be too much for me right now, but I'll give it a try :) (I only seriously picked up the guitar 5 months ago haha) Months ago I didn't even think I would be able to EVER play this riff, but after consistent grinding on my techniques and actually started learning it, I feel like it is actually possible, I just need to take it slow and grind through it ;) (and I mean, I'm not expecting myself to play already like JM now, just hope to be able to play the riff in a somewhat slower tempo relatively consistently) And there is another thing that I am unsure of - After the first 2-3 days I found my right hand being a bit unstable, and not really able to play "under control". I recalled Davie504 using his other fingers to "anchor" on his bass, and he said he developed this habit to help himself ensure his right hand maintains stable and consistent when he's slapping. So, I actually tried to do that with my pinky finger as an anchor. And surprisingly, I personally found this very helpful and significantly improve my ability to control my right hand, now my right hand thumb and index fingers tend to be able to play more consistently without hitting the wrong strings by accident. I also happened to see one of my favorite guitarists occasionally do this when he's doing fast fingerstyle song, just wondering if this is actually something common (or actually weird) to do. But I might keep doing this for the time being as it works for me. ;)

This is right up my alley! Learned this song in the past (I'm far from good at it yet!) and I watch everything I can about JM. After seeing videos on Neon, and recently his tik-tok, and being a fan of yours, seeing this excited me. Thanks so much for sharing! I'd recommend you watch Tyler's experience learning Neon on his channel Music Is Win -- you may enjoy that!

I already did a long time ago! It was fun. I like his completely different approach. I’ve seen almost all the videos on this topic... This is a hard song indeed and you can dig deep into this riff. But you have to stop somewhere. I know I could play it better.

The john mayer ticktok - his thumb hits the string at a straight angle. The same kind of angle you did on the first string minus the slap. So you would get more of a enhanced drum roll effect.

The hardest part for me is the chords, it's either stretch my hand and thumb to make it work and flow and possibly get dead notes OR jump to a stretched hand position which is hard to jump to when playing at a good speed. What I've been doing just to make it sound similar and make myself not quit immediately is just muting the bass notes with my thumb. I don't know if it's just me but if a song I'm learning doesn't sound that good after a day i stop, so muting with my thumb instead of trying to fret is way easier and keeps my morale up a little.
@PavelFomenkov
@PavelFomenkov 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the chords are hard for me, too. I usually play everything "as intended", but here I was forced to play like I can because I can't stretch my hand as it needed to be stretched.
