It's a crime this channel isn't bigger, Lamont. It's always great to hear from you anyway, but how you include things that aren't ONLY language learning is excellent. For my own selfish wants, I hope your channel gets big enough that you ONLY have time for family, language learning, and KZfaq because I want more of your insights on things more often. And congratulations on the weight loss. Anyone who thinks it isn't significant either doesn't have a weight problem or hasn't lost that much themselves! Well done. 🤘

Thanks Jeffrey! You're right that the channel isn't huge but remember, subs are a poor measure of a channel's size. There are lots of channels with half a million subs that don't get 15,000 views per video (whereas I generally do). So the channel is kinda bigger than it looks... a bit like my tummy in clothes before my weight loss. 😆

Ah sorry to hear that my dude, but to restate the point you made in the video - just think of it as the Viking taking a while off and now he's back to set things right haha. I've tried a few times over the years and keep falling off the wagon, but I would probably be 40lbs heavier if I hadn't tried at all; it's videos like yours that help put me back on track again. At least the video uploads have been top notch, if stressful! Excellent content! @@daysandwords

Well, very much not a dietician and definitely not an experienced lifter. The one tip I would give is, if they're available and not too expensive, STRAWBERRIES. Seriously, you cannot eat your maintenance calories in strawberries. It's basically not possible (for me it would be almost 6kg a day)... but they fill you up and don't have dangerous levels of anything (at least not in 1 or 2 kg amounts, which is still HEAPS).

Great video and the transformation is a night and day difference! I quite liked the method acting style approach of adopting a different mindset - certain niche natural bodybuilders also use (on purpose) fictional characters as a source of inspiration and of something to aim towards, but I haven't really thought of it in the style of already becoming that character and adopting their habits and habits from day 0. It does make a lot of sense though considering how our beliefs about ourselves aka the stories we believe are essentially self fulfilling prophesies and I see no reason why not to adopt a story that already has the desired ideals integrated and adopting the behaviors from that mindset. I think its an especially interesting practice as it can almost be a type of window from which you can peek to a potential different lifestyle immediately without having to first build a level of self belief that would allow one to improve. Ironically though, seeing it actualized in reality through said window can be exactly what it might take for many people to start building that confidence in the first place. After all, they don't need confidence to peek through that window at first, as its "not them", but instead someone else who's shoes you get to try on for a day.

This is really good insight. I started running about 6 weeks ago after quitting my job (to start a business). I needed a way to get out more, so I bought a gym membership, and have really enjoyed running and doing some lifting. I’m on the thinner side, and have a fast metabolism so I’ve never had any weight issues. People seem to think being skinny solves your problems, but it doesn’t. After realizing I was anemic, I also started taking an iron supplement, and with working out about 3x a week I already have more energy to complete basic tasks (I.e., DISHES and LAUNDRY, which were such a burden before!). I need to start thinking about food and language learning in the ways you’ve mentioned. Although I don’t over eat, the foods I eat are not going to help me! I need to cook more whole foods. I’m learning Hindi, and I think saying, “I’m going to listen to Hindi stories and run,” vs, “I’m going to run, and maybe listen to some Hindi,” will help improve my learning. It can be hard because since getting familiar with a new language, it feels like my head is exploding with ideas of what I could say, but my vocabulary simply isn’t there. Great video, I will be thinking about this more.

Great video cheers Lamont. I would love to combine exercise with language learning. I haven't yet managed to listen while I exercise though, as I feel like I need music motivation to get through the jog. My compromise was to listen to music in my target language though haha. but you're not really paying attention to the words anyway. I think some people also struggle with attention, me personally I am really bad at passively listening to something whilst I do something esle. eg. jogging, cleaning, driving, and listening to something, I kind of need to be sitting down and 100% focussed on the content. one thing that has helped me though to stay somewhat focussed on audio content whilst doing somthing else is the shadowing technique, ie. just repeating what you hear immediately after you hear it. this at least forces me to stay with the content a bit

You are one of the most cerative and imaginative and interesting persons I learned to know thanks to KZfaq and thanks to the language learning interest! This video is so fresh in its approach! Your three-year old is such a typical Swedish kid, so you actually must have Swedish genes! Probably your wife has, too! I'm glad you dared to show us your charming kids! Your genes might be Swedish for a fact, via Scotland, but who cares, you are now a Swede by choice and merit, no doubt about it! Well done if you colonize Australia a bit! 🙂Remember "lördags-godis" which should be a small amount of treats for the kids only on Saturdays. I usually made a mixture of chocolate, gummy-bears (?), raisins, peanuts, and home-made popcorn. These are the things I eat (in southern Sweden, mainly vegetarian, preferably organic and fair-trade, "foraged" at the local store. I don't eat too much often, but never want to be too hungry, either): Breakfast: two pieces of home baked bread (a scones recipe with whole grain - dinkel and oats - and with added this and that for health) and non-dairy cheese; a huge cup of dairy-free cocoa, stevia sweetened. Lunch: a bowl of blueberries, banana, lots of fiber (husk, oats), a spoonfull of pumpkin protein, a cup of Greek youghurt (dairy, fatty), apple-sauce (organic/local, homemade, unpeeled, cooked, mixed, light sweetened). Dinner: a veggie soup or salad - with sandwich if I'm extra hungry. I make my meals out of 3-4 veggies (varying them), and I prefer the recipes to be quick to prepare. What is Swedish about this? That we preferably use organic/local apples, potatoes, carrots, kales, flour, eggs, virgin oils of rape-seed, and almost always we can find that. Many are often more expensive than the imported and unhealthier variants, but then we just take simpler ingredients. Apples are cheaper than kiwi, local organic potatoes+carrots are cheaper than imported sweet potatoes, conserved organic tomatoes (for soups) are cheaper than organic when out of season, Swedish leek is always cheap and endures a few (centi)grades of frost really well and the green parts are good to eat, too, etc. I think it is very Swedish to consider health all the time, reading the list of ingredients, keeping up with official recommendations, and being generally fuzzy about health and environmental issues. For example we have the traditional Nordic pattern of healthy eating (Nordisk kost) which is scientifically claimed to be as healthy as the Mediterranean. It is high-lighted everywhere, also at the doctor's (and we have almost free health services compared to the USA). Additionally we have "Nordic walking" with poles (my hubby's poles have a bungy function, that enhances the training for upperbody muscles). Generally we get all kinds of health information. So keep it up, you are doing great, Swedish Lamont! Your exercise is visible on the photos. Congrats to your healthy, imaginative approach, it fits your personality perfectly! And thank you very much for sharing!

Fantastic concept! I gotta say, this doesn't have to be a particular "healthier" nation, like, if I have no affinity with Sweden, thinking of myself as Swedish probably wouldn't do anything. I bet this is tied to our linguistic sub-personalities. I've not experimented with exercising, but i do know that my native language personality (Russian) is full of insecurities and childhood trauma and all the bad shit that's ever happened to me. My English sub-personality is confident, funny, outgoing, etc, because she's never been through all that horrible stuff that my Russian self has been through. My French sub-personality for some weird reason is super into history and politics, which I don't even know where it came from, lol. If you convince yourself you're your own alter ego, there's no stopping!

I recently moved into a city, and this has reminded me that I can use this to my advantage. When I was out in the boonies, winter means all my walking trails are covered with deep enough snow that the slog is unappealing, amd the snowbanks narrow the roads dangerously. Now, the closest library is almost an hour walk away (less for others because I amble), and there's parks relatively nearby, too. Winter is my time for doing things because I have time and energy because summer is high season for my trade. Nu kör vi!

Also, as a Canadian, kilos don't make as much intuitive sense as pounds to me, so it took a second watch to catch that 9 kilos is massive! That's nearly 20 pounds, and in such a short time, I hope you are feeling so much healthier. Starting today, I am also trying to fika and have lördags godis. Have a trest every day, but intentionally and make it a nice experience, plus one day a week of sugar indulgence, instead of a constant grazing of carbs and sweets.

Yeah 9kg is quite a lot. I actually mentioned in the "I quit Spanish" video that 9kg is basically exactly 20 pounds, but I didn't mention it here because I find that a lot of North Americans are getting better at converting it themselves. This isn't directed at you - but I think a lot of us (especially who watch sports/fitness youtubers) are getting better at thinking in both metric and imperial, because it's just so common now. A lot of the running channels I watch are American and they talk in miles but they also know KMs because like... you can't be a runner and not know what a K is.

I know this is not your "typical" language learning type of video, but I think this is a great idea to help shift mindset ! I'm a German language learner, and I keep thinking to myself lately, in regards to my own fitness/well-being journey, that I would like to adopt Spaizergang. (I mean hey, if I get to stay in Germany again, even just for short holiday, I don't want to be the American who can't walk for more than a mile before getting winded 😅) But I'd like to imagine that while I'm walking around here in my small, car-reliant city and neighborhood (which you get weird looks for walking to the nearby supermarket which isn't even more than a 20 minute walk away), that I am simply a Deutscher and it's a perfectly normal thing to do. Great video man :^)

I have a similar story to tell. As a kid I was often ill and skipped a lot of PE classes. Compared to other children, I was complete trash, and my skills got even worse. Everyone hated to be in the same team with me, so my hatred to PE classes grew larger. I attended every class I could, but I was convinced, that I am unable to become better at it. As a university student, I started learning Chinese. I was lucky enough to get a semester of studying abroad. My Chinese university had some optional courses, and I ended up taking wushu class (despite being really scared, but I would never forgive myself missing this chance). This experience turned out to be great. I got the worst grades in my group, but it was absolutely fun. A year and a half ago I realized, that my energy level was really low, because I lacked exercise and movement. I started looking for a sports club. I wanted it to be something martial arts related. I have always been a martial arts admirer, but I had a strong disbelief in myself. However, this positive experience in China changed my perspective. Now I am a fencer in historic european martial arts. It's been a year and a half since my first training session. Since september, I go to gym regularly. Everything is possible if you believe in it

How long does it take you the write a script? The wording is always spot on. A few rewrites or are you pretty good at nailing it first time? What i retained: - think of exercise as a byproduct/simultaneous activity to language time. - use how you want to feel in the near future i.e. a few hours from now as a way to push you to eat healthy now and resist that treat. - you and i are the same age - we have different lives and metabolisms but also a habit of eating what we shouldn't ;) Do you have a tip for finding comprehensible input as a beginner that fits in with this combining of sport and language learning? Since i cant read listen and workout to increase comprehensibility. I'm doing Danish every day with LingQ mini stories in the morning, then passively listening to the radio while i work. Passive may be a good supplement but its active immersion thats where most progress is at, right??
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 5 ай бұрын
Hey Alex! Wow, a lot to address here. OK I'll go from the top: - My scripts are all over the place. Sometimes they change so much that I literally record the A-roll of the video and end up scrapping all of it because I don't even know what the video is about anymore. The recent Duolingo one was one example... that A-roll that you saw was a complete do-over because the first thing I recorded just didn't end up being any kind of video. Basically the video that never saw the light of day was like... not even the first draft, it was just, something that doesn't need to be published. - THIS video was reeeeeasonably straight forward except that you might notice (I hope) that at no point did it look like I had memorised what to say, because I actually hadn't. I had the points that I wanted to address, and then just recorded until I felt I'd addressed them all, and then cut it all together in a way that makes sense. That's why the cuts are very frequent. It definitely takes longer this way but I'd argue that that feel that it has of me just talking to someone who is in the room is kind of irreplaceable. It's not necessarily the BEST use of resources for a video but it always results in the most engaging delivery of the script. Now to your question... so, there's a theory out there that I'd essentially agree with that says, maybe you need 200 hours minimum of active study of Danish to actually learn what you need to know, but then on top of that you might need "2000" hours of equivalent study time. But those 2000 hours are not measured in time, they are measured in quality where say, actively immersing and reminding yourself of words and concepts or whatever means that 1 hour counts as 2, whereas reading a book while listening to the audio might mean that 1 hour counts as 90 minutes... and listening to an audiobook while you're running might mean that 1 hour only counts at 40 minutes. So if you ONLY did the running thing you might need 3000 REAL hours to account for the 2000 hours... Do you get me? But an interesting twist on this is that the more you do beyond the first 200 hours of deep study, the more effective the passive study will be. Essentially, if you can spare 30 to 1 hour minutes a day for active study at the moment, eventually, just listening to Danish as much as possible will be very beneficial... but if you just do that now it mightn't help so much. But also, at least SOME (if not a lot) of passive study is definitely useful. Think of how much French you've probably picked up without realising it. Language is afterall, a subconscious process.

I've consistently failed to make the kind of permanent changes to my diet and lifestyle that I need to make. I'm starting to think I need to give it another try. I am painfully aware that I tend to eat my emotions. I'm a very anxious person and it seems like I attempt to eat it away with bad food and lots of it. Despite the cliché that admitting it is the first step to change, admitting it has never made much difference to me. I always end up falling back into old habits when I'm tired or stressed or just craving something that tastes good.
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 5 ай бұрын
Yeah I am pretty similar. I admitted it when I was 16. It doesn't take much to throw me off either. Like I said, I'm not a dietician, and nor am I a psychologist, but one step might be to examine: - When you say "Today I'm going to eat healthily" - what is it (really) that will make you give up on that? I find that that's been a key to helping me keep going for at least one day. Examining why it is that I am so willing to SAY the thing but not willing to do it. For me I think it might be a failure to recognise that the future is real. That's also why procrastination exists. You don't actually feel that you're going to be in the situation of needing to hand your assignment in, or get up in the morning. You KNOW that you are, but you don't FEEL that you are, so you just do what you feel like doing now. That's why I'm not good at eating for more than 1 day away. I know for a fact that I'm going for a run so I know what food I need for that. But I don't FEEL that I'll be fatter in one week if I eat three doughnuts now, so why not? So at present, I'm trying to strengthen my feeling for the future as a real thing that's happening now.

really big fan of these tips! the narrative shift is really useful, there's often this feedback loop of "i'm not the sort of person who does X, small steps to do X more often or more easily are for the sort of people who do X -> i won't take those small steps -> i end up not doing X -> i'm not the sort of person who does X", rinse and repeat so finding a way to short-circuit that and reverse it, even if it's with a silly little story you tell yourself, can help a lot! it sounds like another benefit of tying exercise and language learning like you did was that even if your motivation and focus on one started to fade and shift to the other, it still wouldn't fall by the wayside

Haha, thanks. I disagree. In fact to take the thumbnail, I tried to not drink any water that day because my pecs were looking pretty flabby, and I know this to be from hydration... But it didn't really work (if I'd gone for a much longer run maybe). It's funny, some people see my forearms and think that I must be at near starvation levels, but I'm so far off that it's wild. I have very good reason to believe that I'd be quite comfortable at 62kg... and I'm still 76-77 (a bit before I made the video I'd actually dipped into the 75s)... so if I REALLY needed to I could drop SO much body fat.

Everything is mental and I think you’re right about the fast food. I picture myself as an American and most of us eat too much junk food. I want to get back to my weight when I was in Japan so I guess it’s time to think of what mental image of myself can get me there. I could go Japanese but I don’t know how to cook any Japanese food 😂.

Another great video Lamont. If you’ve ever read Atomic Habits by James Clear, much of what you’ve said aligns with his advice. Instead of being someone who wishes they could learn languages, identify as a person who is a language learner. As soon as you identify as that person, you can easier do the kind of things a language learner does, because now you are one. Similarly, instead of being someone who wants to lose weight or get fitter, identify as a person who actively looks after themselves, and start to do the things that kind of person does. I’ve never been able to language learn whilst running though. How do you do it? I always walk and listen simultaneously, and walk to listen and listen to walk, just as you describe doing for running. I can also do this for weight lifting. But I’ve always needed music to run… and it needs to be epic music, the kind of music where I can imagine myself running in order to do some heroic event, or running from something extremely dangerous. 😂 I suppose I need to identify as the sort of person who language learns whilst running and see what that does… Something you touched on slightly, but I wonder if you have plans to expand on… did you find your ‘active’ language study (or any other kind of mental activity) improved when done immediately after running? Anecdotally, I believe my study sessions are better and I’m able to retain more information if I do that session after some strenuous exercise like a run. Anyway. Great video, as ever.

I'm not always pairing my activities and I am often distracted by shiny things in English, but when I can kill two birds with one stone is when I make most progress, even when I am killing one or both of the birds less efficiently than I otherwise would. I really think that for my almost certainly ADHD brain it is one of the only ways not to wander off and do something else entirely. Like if I'm listening to a podcast while painting, I will inevitably zone out of one at some point as I get more focused on the other, but that's always better than not doing it at all. And languages really do give you different personalities/idealised selves that you can tap into as a resource.

Nice video. Now as a native Spanish speaker I'm always a bit confused about your farewell because "lo quiero" means "I want it" whereas "los quiero" means "I love you (all)". I haven't realized before how this tiny phonetic difference has a big difference in meaning. However it would be understandable if you have a Cuban friend or something similar, because Caribbean Spanish speakers sometimes omit some "s" sounds in their speech. But as I know you were in Mexico recently it strikes me as an odd pronunciation to choose.

You should see the candy stores in Sweden. Some of them are the size of a fairly good-sized grocery store, but it’s all candy! I think even Willy Wonka would be impressed. Of course, I’m only familiar with the parts of Sweden that are near the Norwegian border, and those stores probably cater mostly to Norwegians. So maybe the rest of Sweden is all vegetables and health food stores.

While doing some research for a planned vanlife trip through Sweden, found a few such stores. It's quite insane that they even exist to begin with. Said stores usually belong to a candy producer. Googled the largest candy store for sh!1 and giggles, apparently it's in Haparanda in Sweden. Apparently it has a floor space of 750 square meters, that's quite large (like 3 large villa's), place is name the inspiring name "Candy world".

In fact I've pointed out before that they are the first group of people I've met and thought "Holy crap calm down with the sugar..." I don't much like a lot of Swedish sweet stuff though. I like kanelbullar and våfflor and some of that stuff, but not the candy cars and all that stuff (and I hate liquorice).

@@daysandwords At least when it comes to fast food, things gotten so expensive that I bet allot of people are eating healthier just due to cost. Showed my brother how expensive a national fast food chain has gotten (Max hamburgers). A double Frisko meal costs 135 SEK, almost all of that (around 110 SEK) is just for the hamburger. it's cheaper to go to a grocery store and buy all the stuff to make your own hamburgers, one thing that's still not that expensive (more expensive than before) are frozen meals/microwave food. One thing my brother does is go to Lidl and get the cheapo 3 pack pizza's for around 50 SEK. Then he slaps some extra cheese n stuff on it, works quite well (I love adding a pack of diced bacon to frozen pizzas).

@daysandwords

Australia is about the same as the US in that regard - in the right kind of clothes, I do like skinny-ish - but like I said to someone else, it's about knowing what you would naturally be if you didn't eat like humans have never eaten (i.e. lots of processed sugar). At my lightest as a 5'11" adult, I was 66kg. That was about the weight that I think I should be. I was skinny for sure but I didn't look like I was starving or about to collapse. I feel like 70kg is well within reach for me now, and 85kg only comes from lack of discipline eating.

Hi Lamont. I'm Italian and I'm trying to get my English to the next level, while also improving my French.The reasons are infinite, mastering English is basically a must in today's world and of course I also enjoy doing that immensely; French is very useful in general, but especially to a student of "Humanities", or Literature, or whatever you wanna call it, which I am, and the prospect of going to France for a while also seems feasible to me. However, I recently unexpectedly grew an interest in Swedish. I don't know how to explain it briefly, it just kind of sounds too beautiful, it makes me daydream and I feel like it would give me the opportunity to get to know a culture I have zero experience with. But I don't know if I will actually ever go to Sweden, where by the way it is said that almost everyone can speak fluent English, and I am certain that a language like German would prove valuable no matter what I end up doing in my life. I'm also a bit scared by the fact that Swedish dub almost doesn't exist, so I can't even watch things I've already watched in my target language. So I want to ask you, who are probably the person I most respect on the internet, what advice would you give to me in my situation? As a 23 years old student, scared of missing out too many things in exchange of a language I could never end up using, who does not have the slightest "need" of learning it aside from a genuine interest with fragile foundations (it really is a sort of fantasy and nothing more), and who would profit a lot by really mastering English, French and then jumping to German, with 100% possibility regardless of what I'll do in my life (which I absolutely don't know). Thank you very much, love from Italy.

There are only so many times you can return to Weight Watchers and expect to be motivated by the same strategies that didn’t lead to consistent improvement previously.
