Nice video ! I'm a father of two who bought a house last year. For me, it was a major turning point! In addition to feeling the effects of the economic downturn, I'm lucky enough to enjoy a respectable monthly income from wise investments that I've made. I have therefore meticulously prepared for my retirement following my children's graduation from college.

Wow, very intriguing! Currently, I am looking for investing ideas or recommendations. Earlier this year, I hesitated and did not take any action till now. However, I am motivated to try something new because I am quite open to other investing opportunities. I want to retire in my forties or fifties. I sincerely wish I could achieve what you've accomplished, and I believe it will happen.

Generally, investing requires higher knowledge. For this reason, it's important to have a solid support structure to guide you through especially in asset picking. I operate with (Alex martin tarlor) an investment specialist who partners with a licensed wealth management firm. For the record, his experience has been the best for my finance

You mentioned a lot of my money-saving tips. One thing that is really useful to mention is something most people don't think of. If you ask most people what their biggest expense is, they usually say housing. But it actually probably is taxes! Most places now charge VAT or GST on goods and services, so every time you stop yourself from buying something new, you also save the extra cost of taxes. Where I live there is no tax charged on purchases from charity shops, and I often buy things from garage/boot/yard sales (whatever they call it where you live), and sometimes pick items up from the side of the road that have "FREE" signs on them. Some people I know pick these things up and resell them, or fix them up or rework them, and then sell them. The same for services. Since the lockdowns I now cut my own hair - so I don't pay for haircuts or the tax on that service. And I also cut a friend's hair until she figured out how to do it herself by watching a KZfaq video. If you add up the tax you save by saying no to all those purchases, it can really add up! And you can organize clothing and "stuff" swaps, too, with friends. Some places now have "Reuse" centres at the local tip/dump where you can leave items you no longer need, and pick up anything you want for free. This is how I get most of my books, as a big reader. When I read them I return them, so I only need some temporary holding space for the ones I have picked up and haven't yet read. Thanks for sharing your tips!

There are so many things that can be cut back on or not purchased at all. Everyone is not going to be able to do as you’ve done, but even simple changes can make a big difference. Eating out/fast food is a common expense that can be eliminated without much pain. If you’re not tracking your purchases you will be amazed at how much you’re spending. Cooking at home is always less expensive. Many people are clothing snobs. There are perfectly lovely clothes out there that are affordable. A cute outfit can be put together for under $100……you don’t have to spend that much on one item. Shopping at consignment shops or 2nd hand shops can yield great finds, depending on where you live. Children don’t have to have everything they want. I know that’s practically blasphemous to some parents 😆….but it’s true.

Lovely video. As I live in a town I've been able to manage without a car and make all my local journeys by bicycle. About four years ago I had solid tyres, made by Tannus, fitted to it. That has saved me a lot of money on new tyres, inner tubes and time lost and stress caused by punctures. The ride is just a bit slower and bumpier but the reliability makes up for it.

My husband I began a budget forty years ago when he was in school getting a second degree and I was working. It was amazing to see our itemized expenses monthly and that enabled us to have more as we continued, as the awareness of where each dollar was going was essential to not only our life at the time, but it provided a most practical and joyful way of living. The result of a strict budget all those years resulted in much joy along the way, and now in our retirement it has provided a sense of freedom financially and in our energy and joy currently. Budgeting does not mean drudgery or depriving oneself of the lifestyle one loves. . Budgeting means intelligently making choices, and creating a healthy balance in one’s mind and activities. It’s truly a freeing thing that brings a sense of abundance and healthy living. Thank you Molly for presenting your ideas so gently and with such mindful intention. 🙏🕊

Agreed! I'm in my mid 40s and often encourage my younger colleagues to learn to live with less, so they can save for retirement. Most refuse. I tell them they don't need anywhere near as much as they think they do in order to be happy. That concept is lost on the vast majority of them. Only one has taken my advice and applied it. She routinely thanks me for my wisdom and expresses her concerns about her peers. As I remind her, her actions now will pay off in spades in the future. She will not only sleep better at night, but she will have a healthier, happier marriage and retirement.

This is a truly wise post. I came to budgeting late in my life and wish I'd done it decades sooner. It is joyful to live without financial stress even though I have a low income. I have everything I need and count myself very fortunate.

You can also buy sock that you can trade in if they have a lifetime warranty- you just take them back to the store you purchased at and they’ll trade them in for free!

paying my car insurance yearly vs monthly is my biggest tip in money savings. the amount they charge when you pay monthly is nearly double. (at least here in California)

Thanks for this video, Molly. I needed to redo my budget and your video prompted me to go and do it. I tend to work on a 50/30/20 plan which is 50% on needs (essential spending) 30% wants (clothes, fun stuff) and 20% savings (for holidays, gifts, big items etc). Also, to set individual limits on food, clothes, meals out, also Christmas spending as that could go wild otherwise 🤣 We found it very hard to save when the kids were young. There was always more money than month, and spending on food, clothes, holidays, not to mention mortgage, was much higher. So it’s not always possible to save. Sometimes just getting to the end of the month without going overdrawn is an achievement. And beware of credit cards!

I handle it the same way with netflix :) Regarding food I don't like to make compromises but sometimes I need to. So I choose which one is more acceptable for me personally. for example with potatoes and pasta cheaper quality is more okay for me than with nuts or tofu. And I also find waiting before purchases very helpful (if they're not urgent and necessary)

Thanks as usual for being so "normal" and make me feel less weird when I try to cut on futility and no sense expenses. We have a 3 years old girl and besides the obvious costs of education and health we are teaching her how to be conscious on what we consume, what we use and how we care for things and I can see it makes her look at life differently. Even when simply talking about toys. We do let her have what she asks for but we always discuss it first snd most of the time she's the one saying "I don't actually need it". I will never be strict on things she drsire, i want her to be happy but I'm grateful to see that the seeds we are planting are actually taking hold. It means there is hope for everyone. You are a shining light Molly, thanks for reminding us we are not alone in this endeavour for change ❤

Me and my husband save my income and use his to pay all the bills. That is hoe we have been able to save. I am also not someone who needs much, as long as thr basic needs are met, we good.

Great video, thank you! I work at a library and save so much borrowing books (we also have free ebooks and eaudiobooks!). I’m trying to set up a seed library as well so our patrons can get free seeds for their gardens. Shopping on specific days here in the States helps with finding lots of discounted items and sales. I also paid off lots of debt with the help of the book “Get Money” by Kristin Wong. She makes it like a game, which would be great for young people.

Living frugally and saving money is important for me. But when you have children, it often becomes very difficult, especially with the expenses for education and health. I mean, you can save on buying clothes second-hand and eating seasonally and locally, but then come the bills for doctors, the school, etc...

The library is my biggest money saving tip - not only borrowing physical books but utilising their ebooks and audiobooks through Libby. It’s saved me thousands!

A suggestion: Look into how much you spend each year in service fees, especially for credit/debit. I cut an average of $300 in service fees switching to cash & checks only. I don’t use any credit anymore. I’m not as able, you have to save up for big ticket items, but you take better care with your property and are less frivolous with spending.✌️💗

I've always loved charity shops! I still get things there when I see them, but overall prefer online (like Vinted) as I can specifically search what I'm after and often find higher quality peices 😊

Make sure you budget some 'blow' money. Just a bit that you won't feel guilty about. I have found, just like food, if you are way too restrictive then you will lose the joy of living everyday life.

Wondering whether there there still worthwhile savings switching vehicle & home insurance after the FCA banned discrimination between new and existing customers ? Having routinely switched and been on good, and I guess, loss leading deal when the law changed, it hasn't been worth switching.

A lot of sensable tips! If I want to start selling some of my stuff online, to declutter and make some money, what would you recommend? Is Ebay good? Etsy? I would start with clothing mostly, maybe some household things.

I believe that depends on where you live... I sell clothes on vinted and Kleinanzeigen which is a local add formerly known as ebay Kleinanzeigen. I also attend clothes swaps regularly

I'm new so apologies if you've covered this. Do you live in someone's backyard? Do you have to budget for land taxes, utilities etc.? What would happen, if you are in someone's backyard, if they sold up and moved i.e. to an apartment or if they're older, to a retirement home, or back to their homeland if they're immigrants etc.?

Well that explains how she can save i.e. rent, taxes, utilities etc. However, there are definitely risks involved in putting yourself at the whim of others i.e. what happens if boyfriend breaks up with her or his mother decides to move etc. I think I prefer a more stable form of independence.

Ah yes I do have a partner. He shares some of these values, but he's not keen on being shown in my videos which I respect! We also keep most of our money separate as this works better for us 😊
