Thanks Jess. I'm new to your channel as well. I've watched that Dan Grieve/Rick Shiels short game video so many times, bought the book, and made checklists on all 3 releases. The way you took your time, showed the steps in order, and explained them was very helpful. As a beginner, I sometimes still get the releases mixed up. But, when I hit one correctly, it is very rewarding.

I absolutely LOVE his book and videos. I've even made my own spreadsheet with notes and data. My chipping was always pretty decent and for me the Release 1 was tough to use instead of a spinny 56 or 60, but when I started practicing, I clearly saw the misshits were much better. The bunker techniques however, were what did it for me. I actuvely avoided hitting into bunkers, either going long or short when needed, but now I quite enjoy it. I've recently started working on his piching adress system, writing down my yardages with each one and I love it. It fills you with confidence when you get a number you've practiced already. Can't recommend the book enough.

I completely agree! I love Dan’s work and it’s given me so much more confidence around the greens. And the mishits aren’t anywhere near as destructive as they might have been before. I feel the same about bunkers too! I used to dread going in them but now actually quite relish the challenge 🤣

Dan's release method has rescued me from having the worst short game of any gokfer I have seen in playing for 50 years....but there could still be meltdowns despite reading the book from vover to cover multiple times and watching all the videos, but your short summary nails all the small detail for me...focus on weight on left...push the lead shoulder back...slowly!...and let gravity allow the clubhead to fall posted around the left hip. Jess, just subscribed. Like you I have the book and learned a lot from Dan, most recently from his lesson with Jimmy Bullard. I think you're correct that on your release 1 your rotation isn't quite there yet, maybe just a bit tentative but I would have been delighted with those shots on my first attempt on camera ! I've just come back from a practice session with my 58deg and as Dan instructed Jimmy, I made a positive effort to cup my lead wrist at transition, thus keeping the face open and the bounce working. The results were instant both off tight lies and the bunker. I've never been able to hit this shot before !! 😃 I'll follow your progress !

@@jessratcliffegolf This is one thing I'm finally getting through my thick head from Dan. While there are very advanced techniques one can use to enable a high soft shot off a bare lie, most of the time, we want to accept that the lie is not suitable for a release 2, especially if we haven't spent a lot of time practicing those advanced techniques. We need to use a release 1 and just accept whatever we can get out of it.

Excellent video -- I also have Dan's book and am working to get confidence in the process for release 1 so I can take it to the course. Your comment that you need to "be brave" is a great thought that I'm definitely going to adopt. I find that if I'm tentative and don't commit I end up decelerating or worse. One questoin for you related to hand position -- I notice you're low on the grip on release 1 and middle of the grip on release 2 -- is this personal preference? Thanks!

Thank you, Dwayne! I've fallen in love with Release 1 after struggling with chip and runs for a while. I do exactly the same when I get tentative, almost quitting on the shot rather than being brave and committing to it. Great question - I found my hands naturally went there as I was either closer to the ball for Release 1 or a little further away for Release 2. I remember Dan referencing hand position in his book so I was trying to go off that too 🤓

I've tried so many different chipping techniques, hinge and hold, Pelz method, putting method and I've been working with Dan's techniques over the past 3 months and I've experienced success and more consistency. However, I do continue to struggle with his pitching technique. In the southern part of the US we get some tight ball positions, the heat can be 100 F / 37 C in the summer and often for weeks. The grass is often very short and it's hard to do a release 2 with a pitch and I struggle with getting height and distance with using this method as a pitching technique.

Thank you for watching, William! I’m still getting to grips with Dan’s pitching technique - I think I read too much into using Release 2 for pitching and was trying to take his chipping Release 2 method to pitching. And then I saw his latest KZfaq video on pitching, where Dan talks about the adaptations to make when using R2 for pitching. I’m sure you’ve seen it but I believe he also did a video on tight lies, like Bermuda grass, which might be interesting. We’ve got the opposite problem here in the UK at the moment - very wet lies!

Picked this one up from Golf Monthly's recent 'how to spin your chips shots with Dan Grieve' (as I do follow Dan). I've been practising the 3-Releases for some time, and fortunate to have a good short-range facility nearby, and a coach who has taught with Dan - I still want to do his one-day school though. I'd really really recommend the left leg only drill for Release-1 (and it is good to concentrate on that left shoulder), and the no thumbs drill for Release-2. The thing that helps me the most (which you did not mention) is really pick your landing spot. I practice Release-1s from 20-30ft and ~40ft and try to get 7 out of 10 in a 3 foot circle around the hole.

Maybe just the way it came across - really like your presenting style by the way - and wondered if you had practised Dan's A1,2,3 pitching system? Not quite the same story as you... but close. I started golf around 30... played for number of years and became a 5 hdcp. Work took over and I gave up the clubs for about 13 years. BUT took it up once more in late 2022 and was even struggling to break 100! It was soul destroying and tough. But with a few lessons and tonnes of practice, Ive set out to become better than previously. Addressing my short game for me was a biggy! So when I discovered Dan on the internet I too became an avid fan, purchased his book and have never looked back. I'm currently down to 6 hdcp, but now with a much more confident short game, I expect this summer to get down to about a 3 or 4. Favourite release is probably release 2. I truly love it. I use the two tone Srixon balls to see the spin in action. It's so telling of the spin in the different release. Keep going! And when you get to use release 3 in bunkers, it's a game changer. Such a simply consistent concept.

Far from it, sharing what I’ve found helpful for my game in the hope it’s helpful if someone watching hasn’t discovered Dan’s work yet. But yes, you’re right - definitely better to watch Dan than me!

Did you watch the video? She constantly said that it's Dan's content and what components she likes. She also links and referenced Dan's social media for anyone interested.

Rubbish, she constantly refers to Dan and I think it’s great to watch someone go through the process of following Dan’s brilliant book. Incidentally I have subscribed to Dan’s channel and I have his book. Carry on Jess, great work & thank you. 🏌️‍♂️😊👍

Not so sure. It is very interesting to see someone else, who like me, is trying to learn the steps that have been taught. Maybe there are additional things to learn, or think about as well.
