How I made a mattress

As I was preparing to move into a new apartment, I started researching what kind of mattress to buy. I'm not sure how it happened, but in the depths of my research, I came across wool mattresses from a Bulgarian company called Home of Wool. Then I discovered they sell DIY mattress kits and I immediately knew that was a challenge I was eager to take on. So I ordered the kit and 84 pounds of wool and had it all shipped to Brooklyn. Wait, oops actually I accidentally had it sent to Providence. So I drove 3 hours north, stuffed 84 pounds of wool in my boyfriend's Honda Accord, and drove another 3 hours back to New York. And then I made a mattress!
Big thanks to Jared Gay for helping me with filming and polishing the final video and to Ben Swisher for letting me use his beautiful music: benswisher.bandcamp.com/album...
I’ve been sleeping on this mattress for the past 4 months and am very happy with it. Once a week, I rotate and flip it to make sure the wool compresses evenly. It’s not too soft, not too firm. Most of the time I don’t know even think about it, which I think is a sign of a good mattress.
Home of Wool is a really great company that sells mattresses, bedding, and fabric and supplies you need to make your own home things. If you’re interested in buying anything from them, you can follow this link for 5% off:

I just moved too, and decided to make our own mattresses. Crazy? yes. Can't be that hard right? People used to make them all the time, back in the day? Ah thank you for the video, we are not alone in this quest!

It's hard and maybe takes longer, but it's a lot more satisfying to make it yourself!

Looks very thick and comfy. I’m sure you could make one with half the amount of wool.

I'm very intrigued by the idea of sleeping on an all wool mattress, I've read many benefits to it as well. Can you discuss what your initial and long-term feedback is sleeping on the wool mattress? Thank you!

I really like it! It is definitely more firm than a lot of mattresses but not the firmest. I'd say a medium-firm. I also realized later that I didn't put as many tufts in this mattress as I should have and so the wool did shift more in this than in the later ones I made. I've been meaning to buy add some more wool to even it out a bit and also add some tufts. I haven't gotten around to it yet because it's still comfortable and I love sleeping on it.

Hello, you are amazing! Thank you for sharing this wonderful video! After a years of use, would you share how you feel? The wool should no longer be so fluffy and the mattress itself should be firmer. Are you still comfortable? I also had one done a year and a half ago, but it seems to have gotten stiffer and my shoulders hurt. I will be glad if you share how it is with you?

Thank you! So it has gotten more firm. A few months ago I added a latex mattress topper so now the firmness is more medium.

By the way, I want to share what I did to solve this problem. (here too) I love the feel of the wool so much already and didn't want to replace the wool mattress but I don't have time to redo it (I made mine myself too) and I made 2 for my cousin too. She told me that she noticed that the mattress that is surrounded on all sides with boards does not sag and seems to be more soft than the one that is not surrounded. So I bought boards and I renovated my bed, now the mattress is surrounded on each side and it really became rom-soft. I don't have shoulder problem anymore. Maybe this type of mattress should have lateral support so that they don't destruct and stay more shaped and, accordingly, softer.

From made of cotton wool? I wonder if it's comfortable to sleep on it? I love soft mattresses. This one looks odd. I think it should be very comfortable.

How much did it cost you? If I may ask.

Hi! So it wasn't inexpensive because wool can be pricey and the materials are good quality. I believe it was around $1000 for all the materials and the linen encasement and the 84 pounds of wool. According to Home of Wool, you can sleep on this for decades, so I'm planning on keeping it around for awhile!

Do you happen to know about how far apart your bed slats are? I've heard you want them kind of close together with thin wool mattresses, otherwise you might feel the slats. Have you noticed that being a problem?
@HilaryBarker
@HilaryBarker 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I actually haven’t heard that! I got a new bed frame about a week after making the mattress and this bed frame has slats that are very close together and I’ve definitely never felt them. I think I’ve heard the slats should be two inches or less apart.

@@thekind8 I’m sure you can buy them separately but they came with the kit. You could also make them fairly easily from linen yarn or twine.
