Can you make a pillow using a rug tufting gun? I wanted to see if there were other ways to use rug tufting for art/home decor so I decided to make pillows! The process starts similarly to tufting any other rug or wall rug but there are a few key differences when it comes to finishing. While this isn't quite a DIY follow along to see how I made these rug tufted pillows in just under 2 days!

Thank you for this nice video! I'm starting to make rugs this week!! collected everything except the backing I didn't buy yet. What's is your favorite type of backing? Or if you have some nice examples? I imagine you can actually use any type of fabric as backing? idk!! I'm doubting myself too much in this process but like you say; I will take my time and make progress my goal. ^^

Hi! So I use primary back clothing from tuftinggun.com and I've also ordered from jancrafts.com . Tufting fabric needs to have an open enough weave so that the needle can slip through the fibers without tearing them. I haven't tried it but I've heard of some tufters using burlap! There's another creator on YT named Flavor World that seems to have used burlap successfully. Good luck on your tufting journey!

@@SamMadeThat drew from flavor world is great. he gets his burlap from joanns. what kind of yarn do you use? i plan on using wool for anything that goes on the floor, but if it's going on a wall i don't see why acrylic blends wouldn't work out.

Yea! I follow him too. I use acrylic yarn. I have made a few floor rugs with acrylic yarn and they hold up well, even the ones that are almost a year old now still look great! But yes for wall display acrylic is perfectly fine.

At the moment I’m in the middle of a approximately 100 days of art/fan art disability awareness challenge addressing accessibility challenges within media, particularly streaming sites. Called fanartcessibility It’s a mix of digital and traditional painting, a lot of it has been like your motto at the end of the video. Not everything has been ideal however I’m learning a lot with just having to say good enough in order to get things done in time. In another week I’m going to be trying punch needle(closest I can get to rug tufting atm) for the first time and I’m excited to combine my two projects a bit.

I eagerly waited to see the results of using the fusible interfacing. When I did it, I had the same problem - because of the valleys and hills created by the thickness of the yarns, like you, the threads came out!!! Argh! Then I used spray glue! I was worried about the smell but it dissipated and it kind of worked, So on the other pillow, I sprayed the glue and then covered it in cheese cloth which is super thin and you can mosh into the valleys. Well. It kind of worked. I’m going to try another, hopefully, better idea ... that will stick the yarn real good so it can’t be picked out!
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 3 жыл бұрын
Argh so frustrating! I'm actually about to try and make some more and I'm thinking I might use fabric glue on the back and then maybe interface over top of it. Since fabric glue is supposedly able to be washed and dried i think it might work if I make sure I really work it into the fibers. We'll figure it out eventually! It's crazy because I see punch needlers make pillows all the time but no one talks about how the yarn stays in!
@wandakowalski7063
@wandakowalski7063 3 жыл бұрын
The fabric glue would work I think. I have some that I use if I want to glue a rhinestone on a jacket but it gets super hard like plastic. What I thought I'd try is white glue but thinned out a bit with water..I'll spread it on the back and then reinforce with cheesecloth while still wet and then some on top of the cheesecloth. I'm hoping it will stick down the fibres but still not be super hard. I'll let you know how they works! I get that you want it to be washable and I thought of that but I worry that the acrylic will mat ... anywho. Great sharing ideas with you!

Hi Sam! Thanks for your super helpful videos. I'm about to invest in my tufting gun to start crafting my own rug creations... using your code of course. ;) Just wondered, what are the pros or a cons to having two separate tufting guns versus just getting the combined KRD-I Cut- and Loop-Pile Tufting Machine? If its anything like sewing, I have a sewing machine that can be converted into a serger, but I always hated going back and forth rethreading/needle changing etc. when I needed to use both for the same project. So, I ended up buying a separate serger so it was easier to switch back and forth. Would this be something similar if I chose the KRD-I Cut- and Loop-Pile Tufting Machine?
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 2 жыл бұрын
It’s exactly that, these machines are pretty fine tuned and having some thing a millimeter out of place can throw off pile height or ability for scissors to close properly. I didn’t want to deal with that especially since I often do projects that have both cut and loop pile. I started with just the cut pile and then got a loop pile later and it’s just so much easier to grab which ever one I want to use instead of swapping out pieces. I have since purchased the KRD-1 to have as a backup in case one of mine go out but it is much more aggressive than my other guns. It’s going to take me a bit to get used to I don’t think I would recommend it for a new tufter.

Hi I’m new to tiufting and I want to start doing pillows as well. I’m confused on how the interface if works. Can u please explain in a little more detail pretty please.
@SamMadeThat
@SamMadeThat 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! So the kind that I used is specifically a double sided interface and its basically a very thin piece of fabric that has a heat activated adhesive on both sides. So you cut it to what ever size you need and stack it in between the two pieces you want to stick together. In this case I wanted to stick the fabric to the back of my tufted piece so that it had a clean finish and still held my yarn in place. The heat from the iron melts the adhesive thats on it so it does the same thing as if I'd glued them together but without the mess of glue. And because the interfacing is meant for fabrics and apparel the pillow case can be washed and still hold up. There are other kinds of interfacing that only have the adhesive on one side so it would still act like a glue layer to the back of your tufted piece. I just figured it would be easier and neater when sewing if my tufted piece and backing fabric were stuck together. I hope that helps!

@@SamMadeThat Apparently the advertising says that it is adjustable to cut and loops, but I don't see how to cut it, I'm already thinking of returning the product :(

If it is it should have come with scissor attachments. If it didn’t it might already by set up for cut pile and you should be able to see a tiny pair of scissors that sit right underneath the needle.

Depends on what you want to do. The AK-1 is good for cut pile, AK-II is loop pile. It all depends on what effect you are looking for.
