I wondered whether to make this video as I feel there's nothing here you couldn't figure out.
However, I know a lot of folks end up with crappy axe blocks or no axe block at all when they wing it - so here's how I make mine in a consistent and repeatable way to get a useful block.
You'll need some way to bore a good size hole, my T auger is around 1 1/2". The rest can be done with a hatchet and a saw.

Perfect. Exactly the video I’ve been looking for. Math and measuring give me anxiety. Thank you.

Excellent video! A nice presentation at a perfect length. I really appreciate you sharing your wisdom on this, as I’ve always just used a tall round of white spruce, but that’s almost too heavy and hard to move around an indoor workshop. Thanks for the inspiration, friend!

Hey, love your channel. Really helped me get into green woodwork. GOT to push back on the leg splay, though. I tried to go with 30* and the legs are just WAY TOO wide. 15* seems a bit more appropriate.

helpful video. Could you give some tips on how to prep green logs to have them looking like the ones in the vid? dried and without checkings or splits? thanks
@jones_trees_and_treen
@jones_trees_and_treen Жыл бұрын
These ones were sawn into rounds, sealed with PVA glue, stored somewhere shaded. I don't remember how long I left them. They were definitely still green inside. Silky oak doesn't tend to check much.

Awesome. If I only had conifer available, would that be suitable for a chopping block?
@jones_trees_and_treen
@jones_trees_and_treen 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that will work. In some ways its advantageous as the soft wood gets chopped up quicker and makes a less slippy surface so your spoon doesn't slide around.

Hi mate, I got the auger at a junk market for next to nothing. They're old agricultural tools, so if you know where to look you'll find them plentifully and cheap. Restoration required.

I have a question, where do you/how do you get your wood for spoon carving? Great video btw.
@jones_trees_and_treen

Thanks, I mostly get my wood from keeping an eye out on the side of the road. I also regularly check fb marketplace for 'free firewood' listings, which usually means green wood that someone has chopped down. Otherwise, it's all through networking. I have a small group of friends who also carve and we all look out and share with eachother.

Does it matter how green or seasoned the block or the legs are?
@jones_trees_and_treen
@jones_trees_and_treen 2 жыл бұрын
Not really! The greener the block the easier to drill the legs. If the legs come loose due to also being green, just pound them in some more.

Is a 1inch diameter auger going to make a strong enough leg? Yours looks about 1.5inch? I've been finding it hard to find these nice old augers in big sizes
@jones_trees_and_treen
@jones_trees_and_treen Жыл бұрын
Mine is 1.5", yeah. I think 1" would be fine actually, can't hurt to try. I've never broken a leg on one of these and I've made dozens.

Why don't you shave the rough stuff of the legs so they don't look so ugly?
@jones_trees_and_treen
@jones_trees_and_treen Жыл бұрын
I didn't care very much, I made these for students to use for a workshop, the legs are very replaceable.
