a little vlog-style tutorial of how i make my clay pins/magnets/friends! i hope this helps you out and inspires you to make more stuff - i always forget how much fun traditional tactile mediums are, and it's such a joy to get back into 'em~
lemme know if you've got any questions in the comments, and i'll do my best to answer them! ★
✧˖° supplies
• polymer clay - i use sculpey!
• a small rolling pin - i use a small highlighter
• an x-acto knife or boxcutter
• holbein acryla gouache
• assorted paintbrushes
• hard clear uv resin - here's a few different ones: amzn.to/2OwtWmR, bit.ly/2Qze59z, amzn.to/35jjUMt,
• uv lamp - this is the one i bought! amzn.to/2rTcTn5 i wish i had bought a slightly bigger one so it was easier to move the clay pieces in and out, but it does the job
• epoxy glue (e6000 to be exact) to affix your magnets and pins to the back of your friends! you wanna let the glue sit for a day before using the pin or magnet - that way you know the bond is super strong and secure. i got my pin backs and magnets from michael's!

I love this! They are so cute. I feel it's my duty to let you know, since polymer is my thing, the package directions for baking clay are misleading! When you put clay into the oven, it's cold and will take the first fifteen minutes just to heat up to 275, then it needs to sit there for a full fifteen minutes more. All that to say, I'd recommend a minimum of 30 minutes in the oven just so you don't have to think about that stuff. You also won't hurt it going over the time and will just have a stronger end result. Thanks for sharing about polymer clay, it's my favorite, everyone should try it and these pins are a perfect project.

Well, it's a delicate walk, you can burn your pieces if you leave them too long. I know I have ;-; its not a problem if you're going to paint them, but if you have a glow-clay or use colored clay, its best to use a lower temp for a longer bake. Still good tip for letting the clay warm before setting the timer.
@BethWest
@BethWest 4 жыл бұрын
The best practice is to use an oven thermometer, and hold the temp at or slightly above 275. The clay burns because our ovens spike, but you can leave it in at 275 for hours without burning it. The colors of some clays will change if left in really long, but lowering the temp is not recommended by the chemists that make the clay. The 275 temp is important to complete the chemical reactions that need to happen to harden the clay. It’s all dependent on your oven though, sometimes an oven runs hot and a lower setting is what you need to get 275 in your oven. You never know without an oven thermometer though, it can be argued that it’s probably the most important tool for a polymer clayer.

@BethWest
@BethWest 4 жыл бұрын
moonlightstripes they will hold up and you can definitely make bowls and pots, i think you have to scale it to the medium though, you want to make sure it fits in your oven. It’s going to work up differently than ceramic clay also, but there are so many possibilities with polymer clay.

@MegaDanceninja
@MegaDanceninja 4 жыл бұрын
the only thing with nail polish on polymer clay is that it actually will dissolve the clay, so it can make the finish a bit more murky, a cheaper option that doesn't smell as bad & doesn't dissolve clay is polymer clay glaze, which (esp if you get in a big tub) is cheaper than the resin & airdries, but i'm assuming its not as glossy a finish as the resin (i've never tried resin though so i can't say) [again, i get that nail polish is more accessible, but if you are just looking for a cheaper alternative for glazing, polymer clay glaze is the way to go (I also just find it easier to work w/ because its not as much of a pain to clean up compared to polish)]

When you paint the UV resin on, there are actually practice fake nail stands that nail artists use to mount and decorate fake nails. All you need to do is get some sticky tack and stick the pins on top. The stands also usually come on a mount of sorts so you can turn the whole thing around without worrying about getting resin all over your hands

@@egnogg1244 There's no reason to envy someone for something they didn't earn. No one works for the life they're born into, no one works for the cards they're dealt at birth. I mean, I suppose you could envy someone else's life. But, it'd be pointless, because you're envying something unobtainable. Rather than envying someone for something that neither you nor them could actually obtain alone, envy things or characteristics that were well earned, practiced, trained, honed, etc. Also, there's no telling what goes on behind the scenes. That person you envy could have an eating disorder, an abusive family, a horrifically toxic personality disorder, a loved one with a terminal illness, an inferiority complex, deep seated self-hatred, etc. Just be the best version of yourself that you can be. Be the version of yourself that _you_ would envy.

remy I don’t think they were generalizing PDs as horrifically toxic; they were talking about an example, some PD someone has out there being horrifically toxic. An example out there.

Honestly that orange MildLiner is such a terrible colour (9/10 times) a rolling pin is the best use for it.

Thank you so much for this video!! I've been wanting to make Sculpey pins and this was exactly what I needed for instructions and inspiration! Your pins all turned out so cute. I think the translucency of the Posca pens is just the nature of acrylic paint pens, especially the white and yellows, since the paint has to be so thin to flow through markers well.
