While researching on how to make your own homemade flock for table top wargaming I came across the model railway channel called " Great Chesterford Junction Model Railway" (I told you it is a long name ;). On that channel I found a video on how you can use a coffee grinder and sawdust to make your own flock. As promised here is the link to that video. As there is a lot of talking and not so much action in that video I wanted to show how I do it.

Just saw this video over the weekend and was inspired. Picked up a 3L bag of pine wood pet bedding and gave it a go. Worked just like you said, though a bit wetter, as I probably added more paint to get the saturation I wanted, but it is fantastic. Thank you for sharing!

I would not have thought of an old coffee grinder. Almost makes me regret getting rid of mine, but that was like 7 years before I got into painting minis and figuring out how much stuff I can make on my own.

Another source along same lines is wood pellets. Find at farm stores for livestock bedding and there's a pine variety for cat litter boxes. Wet it and it breaks apart. Dry in sun for a bit and voila, back to sawdust form. Often it is more uniform and smaller bits, not as many shavings.

If you have a store nearby where you can buy wood cut to size those places produce vast amounts of sawdust and they throw it away. Its really handy because such industrial saws vacuums up the sawdust into large trashbags. And they will typically just let you take the bags out of the dumpster behind the store free of charge.

For a source of really good fine sawdust just look up a cabinet maker that's local to you. They make kitchen cabinets ect. They will have a bunch of very fine sawdust perfect to make flock with that you'll get a bag of that will keep you supplied for years. Another cool flocking material is carpet padding this chopped up and paint added for color makes great flocking for trees and bushes. You can use an old food processor for this. Add your paint and you can spread it out on a cookie sheet and dry it on very low temps in the oven. Just a couple ideas you might like to try.

Cool technic, thought about it once, but didn't want to ruin my coffee grinder. Started making my own flock by just sawing wood, different sawblades give you different grain sizes. But I recomend it only for small amounts of flocking. It might get a bit too exhausting.

I got about 20kgs of sawdust flour from a cabinet maker. It's the consistency of powder i.e. why it's called sawdust flour.

Really cool! The wood chip one would look great for stuff like barns/stable floors especially. Question: Does the coffee ever get mold/ rot?
@WeltenbauerClub
@WeltenbauerClub 3 жыл бұрын
Not yet ;) it has a color build up. If you take a damp soapy brush you can clean it. (I am to lazy for that and just scratch it out)

@@WeltenbauerClub When I have made "Cold Porcelain" from PVA Glue & Corn Starch, part of the recipe calls for "Vinegar or Lemon Juice" to help combat mold. Wonder if a tiny bit of that would combat it for the most part? Also potentially baking it prior to the grind would too.

Maybe. I never had problems as I seal it in with watered down pva and clear coat. There is no more contact zu air and humidity which could make it go bad

You can grind up sponge but you need a blender, because you have to to add water. Wet sponge chops up nicely, and the longer you run it, the finer it gets.
