It's challenging to explain how a beater makes paper pulp, so I decided to walk you through my whole process with my Critter Beater, so you can see how it works. I use paper pulp to make my jewelry and art, made from the inner bark of abaca.
If you'd like to explore more of the jewelry and art I make with my paper pulp, you can find me in these places :

I used to make paper from plant fibres, and then make jewellery. I'm so inspired by your method, my arty soul is yearning ❤

Your art and your voice are lovely compliments of each other! I just sent a link for a couple of your videos to a friend of mine who lives near Portland, Oregon. As a massage therapist, yoga teacher, stained glass artist, and herbalist, she has a similar vibe. I hope you two can meet someday.

I discovered your work on a youtube short this evening and have enjoyed exploring more of your videos. I really admire your creations. You are an amazing artist with an interesting philosophy. I asked you a couple of questions on a video because I thought it might be something I could try. Having seen how many hours it has to be beaten with your specialised machine I now realise that it is unlikely that I could ever achieve it by hand. Thank you for sharing.

Wow. This is beautiful. Would it not be easier to just do resin. You cover up all pulp anyways. Wonder how that would work. Prob very similar. Amazing work and looks very time consuming

Thank you for sharing your process! I had no idea how time consuming it is. I’m curious how you happened upon this pulp for jewelry making adventure you’re on. It’s amazing! Xo from the Olympic peninsula

Thank you so much! I studied papermaking in college, and worked for a papermaker. She taught me most of what I know about working with abaca pulp in 3D. Jewelry making with it was my own iteration.

This is the critter beater by Mark Lander, right? I want to get one but feel nervous because I don’t know anything about motors and fitting one to it. Is it hard/ how did you do it? Please let me know! Thank you!!!

Yes it is! Whenever I feel uncomfortable in my studio with something outside my abilities I call in help. I'm good at some things, and not so good or confident at other things. When it comes to electrical stuff, I hire help or ask a friend with more knowledge than me. Sometimes it takes a village to make art! The critter is a wonderful tool and so worth it!

@@versostudiomelanie good to hear!!! did you end up hiring or knowing someone who was able to help with the motor and belt details?

@@versostudiomelanie did you find it to be easier or harder than you expected / did you watch any videos on it if Mark has some available? Or was it entirely you and others figuring it out? Thank you so much for your time and response: !(:

... not the paper can do this... You can do this and you just did it by knowing how to combine the techniques you learned over time.

Completely clueless here… why can’t the paper just be blended in a blender?
@versostudiomelanie
@versostudiomelanie Күн бұрын
Great question! For the high shrinkage properties to work, the fibers need to be beaten apart so the ends are tapered. That way they'll twine around each other and pull in as the paper dries, shrinking it onto my 3D form. Cut ends also take away the strength of the paper. Also the fiber is so tough it would break your blender, so there's that! 😁
