Everywhere is the grid then because I live in a jungle and I love the internet. I didn't expect to have it when I moved here, but a cell phone tower on top of a hill has put me, and everyone else in my small village in touch with the rest of the world.

I still get my water from a spring on the side of a hill, but my generator is now only used as a backup. 5 years ago Panama obtained a loan from the international monetary fund to pave the road down the length of my peninsula to increase tourism and development. Two well-known professional athletes have bought several hundred acres of oceanfront land on the other side of my property in order to develop into luxury homes, and between me and the river mouth there are now plans to put in a condo development. But on the other hand, I'm still over an hour away from the nearest city. The one good thing about my current situation, as I see it, is that the local real estate prices have gone through the roof and so I am set to make a decent profit if and when I decide to bail.

Nice to see the tire used for splitting. When you get it really packed, the splits stay put and don't go flying...saves you a lot of stooping and bending over. If you don't have a tire handy you can also bind the wood together with a long bungee...just don't hit it with the axe when you swing...

Sadly, you can find plenty of tires on even the most remote deserted islands in the middle of nowhere. Rubber and plastic are essentially "materials expected to be found in nature" at this point. Survival on a desert island is easier than ever for the sole reason that there's SO much man made trash on them. If survival on a desert island isn't "off grid" then nothing is 😄

A wood burning pizza oven only gets as high as 700 degrees and if you're living off the grid you wouldn't have electricity to power your phone or camera and a surface thermometer.

That IR thermometer is probably powered by 2 AA or 1 9V battery. It can last for years before you buy new ones. Or you can buy rechargeable ones (with low self discharge) and charge them with solar panels. Perfectly compatible with not being connected to the electric grid.

Another good variation is toasting bread, putting pineapple and a slice of cheese on it and put it in microwave for 10 seconds. I like it better without the ham and haven't had it in over 10 years, dang it now I want one! 😆

Once I saw this guy do pizza my life changed forever.... I couldn't find the exact episode but it sold me on making poolish 1st. His process takes a couple days but holy crap.
