If you continue to learn bits of theory gradually, you can add layers to this concept. For example, relative majors and minors can be thought of as the same, and being easy substitutes for each other (like the vi at the end of the verse un the video). Often I see a 1264 as 1414, simply substituting a couple of relative minors. This means I can get away with 1414 if I get lost. Also, the video's 4156 is kind of the classic 1564, but starting on the last bar. This is like level 3 pattern recognition, but it works!

I found an app for the circle of fifths that I use for my cheat sheet. I started several months ago to try and start this process and fell off the wagon. Thanks for this video to give me the nudge to get back into it again. I appreciate you.

You can do it! Keep at it for a while and once you learn it you'll never forget it again!

I do things the old fashioned way, notes on a page. When my worship team (all at least 20 years younger than me) talk about "the four, the five the one" I've always felt like they were speaking a different language. Thanks for helping me understand what the heck they are talking about! Now I can be one of the cool kids 😜

Good stuff! Generally, the only time the 7th scale degree is featured is when the 5 chord is in first inversion (so A/C# in your example). Once you learn the basic number system, you can easily add commonly used inversions - 1/3, 4/6, 5/7 etc.

That's true. I didn't want to get into inversions since I was just trying to teach beginners. But that is important to know!

Some of the songs my church plays are much more involved musically (like Keith and Kristyn Getty's stuff). Do you have any recommendations for memorizing musically complex compositions?

The concept is still the same - you just have to learn more chords than a 1, 4, 5, and 6. Start using this system with a song that uses those chords and get a feel for them. Then, once you get that down you can move onto "harder" chords.

I notice your ring finger is on the same string throughout those verse chords. What do you call that? I'd like my guitar player to mimic this but don't know quite how to explain it to him.

That's just a COMMON NOTE (probably the phrase you're looking for) between all of those chords: G, D, Bm, and Asus all have a D note in them. So when you play guitar there isn't a reason to pick that finger up when switching between chords because the note is in each of those chords.

I must disagree on one thing. Our church plays A LOT of seventh chords! Also there are frequently sus chords and add chords. Don't get me wrong - I memorize my own music as a singer who plays piano. Just saying that some modern worship music has more than major or minor chords.

Do you mean the 7th chord of the progression or for instance, in the key of D the 1 chord with a 7th? Example: D7. The 7 chord in the key of D (C#) is rare to see in our worship songs but sevenths added to 1, 4, 5 and 6 chords is common.

I'm talking about a 7 chord. Not a 7th chord. There's a difference between the two. That's not to say that 7 chords are NEVER played in modern worship. They're just rare.

For me it’s memorizing the tempo, meter and feel of the song that is more challenging. 90 % of Worship chords are the same or similar progression.

Sing the song in your head before you play it. That should help 👊
