Thank you for this, I'll definitely gonna check this plugin out. One plugin which helped me a lot to navigate around nested code blocks is Rainbow Brackets as it colors opening and closing brackets which belong together in the same color (even works for HTML-Tags).

Yes, I was the one who printed out shortcuts on a paper 🤦‍♀️ Gradually have learned quite many combinations. But thanks for this video! Shall definitely install it. I’m sure there are so many more out there still to memorize 🦄

Hey John! I first want to say that your videos helped be get through the first two coding classes! I can't thank you enough for that. Secondly, I was wondering if you plan on doing a little series on data structures? You have a few that touch on bits and pieces, but a succinct data structures series could help a lot of us future programmers with understanding data structures and algorithms. Of course, I will be here either way. I just felt it was worth voicing.

I think you’re going to love IntelliJ. It has evolved functionality over time, so sitting down with it for the first time is like getting into the cockpit of a modern jet fighter. It takes a little time to get fluent, but the most-used features will be similar to other IDEs you have used. I have really used just about every Java IDE that has come (and gone), including Visual Cafe and Microsoft Visual Studio for Java, back before they decided Java was a competitor and killed support for it. I really like Idea better than Netbeans and Eclipse, the two other modern contenders. I use VS Code for Python, although I’m transitioning to PyCharm, which is also made by IntelliJ. I do like VS Code but I don’t know how good the Java support is. But it’s not bad for Python!

I love this plugin and always install it on any IntelliJ install, but on windows it's actually a LOT easier to just use the context menu button and then use the alt key bindings to get places (i.e. menu key -> r -> r to rename). I find most of these to be a lot better ergonomically too as some of the IntelliJ shortcuts are not very ergonomically great for repeated use. Or even better, just double tap shift and start typing what you want to do.

it's even easier to just double click shift as long as what you want to do doesn't conflict with a file name or such. Probably the easiest and most efficient way to do anything.

This is a good video and the plugin does help me learn key codes for things in Idea. However, what is the fascination with the concept that programmers MUST use the keyboard instead of a mouse? Even though these work, I still believe the mouse can be as fast.

When did you switch from Eclipse to IntelliJ and why? :)
@CodingWithJohn
@CodingWithJohn Жыл бұрын
Like 2 years ago maybe? For the channel, I switched because I took a poll of viewers and the majority were using IntelliJ, so it made sense to switch to be the most helpful. For a long time I was more used to Eclipse, but slowly became more familiar with IntelliJ to be able to code as efficiently as I used to. There are still things I like about Eclipse, but now IntelliJ is what I use day to day.

@@CodingWithJohn Thanks :) Just curious, would you consider VSCode or something like that as a daily driver? (I personally find it interesting b/c of the whole dev container thing and I can easily switch to another language and still be in the same environment -- still unsure though if that's the right move)

I believe it could enhance the viewer's experience if you could demonstrate the installation process at the video's outset rather than towards the conclusion. While I understand that this approach might be intended to engage viewers throughout the entire video, it could potentially induce a sense of unease in some individuals.(rephrased by chatGPT) :D Anyway, thank you for this, I am using it now and it enhanced my intelliJ usage

This is clearly some new usage of the word "Helpful" that I was previous unaware of. Likewise, you seem to equate "Productivity" with the speed of entering commands. No-one codes at maximum speed all the time; we all need to take micro-breaks to get our thoughts in order. Or do you prefer the Infinite Number of Monkeys approach to coding??
