How I Negotiated 20% Pay Raises 6 Times in a Row

I worked in engineering and time after time, I consistently managed to get 20-25% pay increases either during the same job or when switching. I must say, it takes less effort to get the increase when switching because it appears more normal. Such a large increase within the same company usually means exceptional work or that you got promoted.

Yes! I switched companies 18 months ago, and I got $21k increase. I'm switching companies again this month and I am getting an 11k increase. So, I'm making $32k more now, than I was 18mo ago. Feels great.

1. Shop around. Don't be lazy. Go on interviews. 2. Have leverage. It shows when you're negotiating. Have a stable job. You can also just get any job first and then use that as leverage for the next job. 3. Look at what they're asking from you that is over and beyond what is normal. That's your negotiating chip. Identify them and use them. 4. Give a reason for them to pay you more. Ex. skill. 5. Know the situation you're in. Do they really need you? Do they really want you to stay? See if you can play one off another. 6. Know when to not press your luck. Sometimes you have leverage. Sometimes you can bluff. Sometimes you don't and can't. Then you can go the safe route and take it as it is. 7.Identify the job that you want and expect a certain salary. Sometimes there are moonshots. Have a number in mind when you're applying for jobs.

I love that you go on interviews even when you are not actively seeking a new job. I’m currently job hunting and began applying everywhere I felt I qualified to now being more selective and successful in my interviews because I am understanding my value (and so many options!) There’s a place I really want to work for and I have a good feeling I’ll get in but at the same time I know I might have to leave in a year to promote myself. That’s just how employers are, they do stagnant because they think they can get away with it.

@@BeatTheBush In my own field, in-job increases are a matter of public record and are determined by collective bargaining. So they aren't something an individual can negotiate. I have had similar experiences in my past as a software engineer. I didn't go as far as pitting one employer against another but rather I was ready to move on so I didn't want to negotiate with my present employer. I typically gained 20-30% raises each time I moved, roughly every 3-4 years (not in Silicon Valley). Employers depend on their employees getting comfortable, when they are comfortable, they don't expect you to look around. Work hard, do your best and always keep your ear to the ground and you will see similar results.

New employers usually know to do it on the dl so they may schedule on Fridays. You can then just say you are taking a long weekend for a trip. You need to catch up on some chores. Any excuse. With a good company intern position the interview and selection process can be same difficulty as a full time position but the only difference is they often pay you poorly, give excess amount of work that nobody wants to do etc. Only thing to do is suck it up and use it for CV then spin the position for full time roles. I had worked around 3 years in each company then moved on - each time to a new position you can exaggerate what you did and increase salary substantially. Also it depends what role you do in the company. If you make good money for the company then they will pay you well and increases will be no problem. If you are just a cost function cog then you are easily replaceable.

I think its fair to say interns out of college aren't rare. Yes fast food workers' skills are ubiquitous in some respects, but not every schmoe off the street can successfully team lead, night manage, or general manage. More common than college degrees, but still not an instant replacement. What's more, there's always inopportune times for hiring and "restructuring"; you can use this to your advantage. If you know its a tough hiring time, or that any new hires go through a costly training period (making mistakes, going slowly, requiring a mentor) then you have leverage over a new hire. Don't believe the idea that taking a low skill job means you're not learning skills. If you weren't, why would the employer keep you?

I'm aiming for an 85k salary in the next couple of years. Spoke to a recruiter who contacted me earlier this week and he said his company can support that. After watching this video, I decided to do the math and that's a 49% pay increase from my current salary!!!!! I'm attracted to the higher salaries of silicon valley, but the cost of living and lack of women puts me off. I'll stay in cold ass nyc.

@@baseballconnection8090 I was just about to comment. It was the best interview I've ever done. Partly because I felt that the job description fit me exactly. However, as soon as I went back to my current job I was told that I would be laid off lol. Hope I get it now! They told me they would reimburse my trip and that I would speak to the CEO next, so I think those are very good signs. Sidenote : BTB should have mentioned that salary hopping is a lot easier when your skills are in higher demand.

In Silicon Valley people do this a lot but then when the recession hits they are the first ones to get laid off. High pay is good to have but you gotta know your worth and if you are getting way more than you’re worth, any decent manager is gonna realize it and put you at the top of the list to get fired.

I probably could get a increase in salary if I apply for jobs in other locations on the west coast and maybe NYC, but I also enjoy a lower cost of living of working where I work (location and industry of employer). So, I'm willing to take the lower salary. I'm due for a increase soon, but I will never be paid the top levels of my field because of the circumstance i mentioned above.
@BeatTheBush

Question is, can you live the same and somehow save more if you move. It's very expensive on the coast.

@@BeatTheBush if I move anywhere that I get higher pay, I have to decrease quality of life (cheap food, no going out, no vacations) unless I get a substantial increase. If I find the right job that double my salary then it might be possible.(get to around mid 100k ish). So any increase in salary will not benefit me in quality life standpoint. At least not yet. If you haven't guess it yet, I work in the software development field.
