Your videos helped out a lot when I first started 8 months ago. Because of your videos, I knew what to expect coming in the post office. My advice to anyone is that there’s nothing better than personal experience and to be patient with yourself as you learn.

Amen to this. My first solo delivery was an absolute disaster and I was contemplating quitting. My advice to anyone new is figure out ways to get out of the office faster, give your self enough time in the truck to learn the route, the boxes and the strategies to get faster will start to come to you.

Hi 😊 I am a new RCA, I've been at it for 2 weeks, and I am frustrated and overwhelmed with how to deliver packages and mail without having to turn around 24 million times. My regular has a pretty big route and I trying my hardest to remember streets, packages, and mail. It's a lot to take in. I really don't like the way my regular set up things for me. Maybe I should tell him I need to find my own way. I need advice! 😊

It does get easier. There certainly are other ways to set things up, but you might want to do as your regular does until you get used to it. Everyone is a little bit different, so you can change things up and find your own way. For me, things got easier when I learned different ways to do things. Some worked for me, others didn't. Check out my first video and a few others. See if anything seems like it might work for you.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n-Bgi6qCr6fZiac.html

I'm on my second week. I know my route but having a tough time organizing it. My carrier does a lot of organizing at the office and at the case and then we deliver in the truck. The post master wants us to take the DPS out in trays (not touch it) and assemble the mail in the truck. It's a tough job and as of now I'm just taking my time, trying not to make mistakes. The good news is I get better every time I do it.

@@neneweeks3263 hi I’ve been a Regular for 3 years.. I would like to chime in with your advice question. For your big packages right them down all big packages on a slip of paper. When you get to that relay drop them off first just to get them out of the way. Another thing, it takes time to get your own technique, so be patient. Being a mail carrier is like riding a bike for the first time. You fall off a few times and scrape your knee a lot of times. But one day, you take those training wheels off❤️

Can you be honest because all I’m hearing is negative things about driving for USPS. Is it a good job/opportunity for someone young who doesn’t want to to go to college now and is not sure if they will. I don’t have the privilege like most young adults to go to school, so I have to work and I’m also a young father. I’m in the hiring process already. I love driving and being outdoors so I applied

@@sohailsohail9655 truth is it depends. For some people it's great, for others it can be terrible. I've made a few videos about the positive s and negatives, but briefly, it really depends on the office and where you live. $20 an hour isn't bad where I live, but it won't cut it in Boulder, CO. And it really depends on your office. My office is great and I really trust my postmaster to go to bat for me. That isn't true everywhere. Since you are a dad, insurance is probably pretty important, so if you are thinking about the post office, you probably should look into becoming a clerk or a city carrier. Their route to full time is much quicker. Let me know if you have specific questions and maybe check out some of my other videos.

Hey i wanted to ask .. how often are RCAs generally called in? I'm hoping to apply and join a local USPS team as an RCA in the coming year or so, but it seems like a dilemma. If i join there and try to keep my current job, they may call me in every day... but if i quit my current job and just go there as RCA, they may only call me in one day a week. How do you be sure? And are RCAs called in every sunday and holiday as well?
@davidkelln9225
@davidkelln9225 4 ай бұрын
It is going to vary greatly. I am in a small office which is fully staffed, so they rarely need me. I have another full time job, and they are fine with that. I usually just fill in at another office on Saturdays and I cover a week of vacation for someone in the Summer. Currently, I do not work on Sundays as my office no longer gets Amazon. On the other hand, some offices will expect you to be available all of the time, and will not accept someone who has another job- it will really depend. The best thing to do is to talk to a supervisor or postmaster from the office that you are interested in to see what their expectations are. Large offices tend to be more demanding, because what you don't cover has to be covered by someone else.

Ok... I'll be starting as an RCA shortly. For us newbies can you explain DPS? Most like that's just your regular mail? I've watched a previous video, but need clarification on how you organize your big pkgs in the LLV for delivery - Do you set them next to the trays that line up with the big pkg addresses? Thanks.
@davidkelln9225
@davidkelln9225 Жыл бұрын
So DPS are the letters for your route that were sorted by a machine, so they are in route order- that should be most of your letters. Because they are in order, they are much easier to put in your case. You can also leave them in the trays and simply deliver them right from the tray. As far as the large packages, I place the first ones in the cab as much as possible, then organize the rest based on what row they are in ( as much as possible - some are large and/or oddly sized. Your regular should show you how they organize them on your ride along.

@@davidkelln9225 are you into casing the dps or bringing it to the truck? My post master is pressuring us to put the DPS in the truck, but this makes me tense. @@sonicmilk I take my DPS to the streets, but I only work one day a week. Obviously it saves time in the office, but it takes longer on the street. In general it saves time, but how much really depends. Are you fast at casing DPS? Do you have flats for most of your customers? Are there any dismounts? Is you route have a lot of busy streets?

@@davidkelln9225 I'm doing Saturdays as a sub, and I suspect the magazines/flats will be low. My thoughts are get that DPS out there in the truck. I have a crazy town house complex with a lot of boxes and some odd numbering which has me a bit concerned but I'm just going to go for it. I have an apartment complex as well and I think that place will work out fine. The start of my route is on a busy street so maybe I'll do a little bit of casing there. Your video 'Casing DPS' was brilliant in answering my questions.

Just accepted an RCA position in Las Vegas NV (HENDRSON OFFICE). I emailed the contact on the Job publication because it says you "may" need to provide your own vehicle but never got a response. I see a mix between POV and LLV on KZfaq. What do you think the chances are I will have to use my own vehicle? I drive a 528i no way I want to deliver mail in that. Console is very large hard to straddle. I don't want to purchase a vehicle on assumptions then when I get there they have an LLV for use. Help please any thoughts ?

do you sort your mail first in the tray or do you just sort it at the box
@davidkelln9225
@davidkelln9225 4 ай бұрын
It depends. Usually I spend a couple minutes in the office with the trays. I check the mail in the front and back of each tray to put them in order and quickly check for potential problems (sometimes you get a stack of mail that either isn't sorted or belongs to another route). Then if they are loose (which they usually are) I squeeze the mail from one tray into the next one just so I can take fewer trays. Then I stack them in order on the cart. Again, pretty quick unless there is an issue. Two weeks ago I had 3 good trays and one that was only half full, but all out of order. It was mostly for my route, so I took the time to case it. The rest of it looked okay, so I took it to the street. So to answer your original question, I usually sort at the box.

How do you follow the case is there a built in gps in the vehicle?
@davidkelln9225
@davidkelln9225 Жыл бұрын
Nope. You follow the mail. The first time I deliver a route, I use the GPS on my phone to find the first mailbox. Then I just start delivering, turning when the street name changes on the letters. Sometimes I make a wrong turn and have to turn around. If I get confused or lost, I put the next address in my smart phone to get back on track. It can seem overwhelming at first, but after you've done it a few times it gets much easier.

@davidkelln9225

How do you deal with 3 or more box holders?
@davidkelln9225
@davidkelln9225 4 ай бұрын
It depends. I might take 1 or 2 on the side if it seems doable- sort of like with the political ads in this video. I would probably case the one that seems the easiest to do so with. I might case all of them. It just depends on the weather, how easy it seems they will be to carry or case, etc. It's much easier to take multiple items on the side in an LLV because you have so much more room in the cab. I've never taken more than one thing on the side in my POVs. Another option is to colate them as you pull down, but then you either have to flip the stack or pull down from beginning to end instead of end to beginning. (Does that make sense?)
@edr449
@edr449 4 ай бұрын
@davidkelln9225 I've been casing the smallest one, then I take an extra half tray for the other 2 and pull the smaller one first, then the big one. Then I combine them with the mail as they go out the window. The extra tray stacks on the case mail. Refill as needed.

@davidkelln9225 I love casing my dps with my flats and keeping my sprs on the side, but it's just too much effort. I'm teetering between casing sprs and not. Most days there's just too much. So dps hides under the sprs in a separate tray banded by streets. I can usually get 5dps down to 2. I actually prefer the metris over my jeep, I'm too tall for the llv lol.
