Just FYI but the gamer nexus hardware review they figured out that that metal plate is part of the cooling system and helps force air over the rest of the motherboard and keep it cool. So be careful if you modify it.

@@CoilWhine the steam deck uses a negative pressure system. (The pressure in the steam deck is less than the air outside) and that plate guides the air sucked in across the motherboard(and also is in direct contact as a heat spreader in some places) and the hottest spot in the steam deck is a FET just above the SSD. So yeah just something to be aware of.

A great thing about Linux is that all AMD drivers are built in the kernel. So, if you want to change your entire machine, you just need to move the SSD to your new build, without the need to re-install the operating system again!

I mean if you are going through the trouble of 3d printing a backplate for the modded deck might as well integrate a portable SSD holder to the back of it so it still be possible to make it portable by detaching a screw/pcie connection. You could maybe also incorporate a small USB-C hub as well so you can have charge passthrough too. It would be a cool setup and still remains in the realm of Jank lmao

Not sure this is really worth it. For someone to buy a steam deck, a graphics card, a power supply, keyboard, monitor, mouse and the cable to hijack the m.2 slot etc. You're getting to the stage where it would be cheaper just to buy a desktop. Which leaves this an option for someone who already has the other parts. If you just buy a desktop you lose the portability of the Steam deck, but with this mod I'd also worry about wear and tear on that m.2 slot, if you continuously switch between dock and handheld. Especially if you put the ssd back into the m2 slot. I don't think those slots are really designed to be changed that often.

@ized88

@@ThailandDantotherescue the difference there is, the commodore is nostalgic and you want that it runs like the hardware / product is supposed to run. For the Steam-Deck you buy a portable mini PC and make it not portable, to get worse performance in the same situation than from dedicated product. Hey i don't have a problem with someone wasting there money for that, higher Steam-Deck sales help everyone who uses it, but it's still kinda pointless and a money waste 🤷🏻‍♂️

I mean, you could probably just wait for an external GPU enclosure (that connects via USB-C) to be sjpported.
@CoilWhine
@CoilWhine 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's possible sadly, USB-C doesn't have the latency or bandwidth that a GPU really wants. Type-C enclosures are using thunderbolt over the type C connector. This doesn't have thunderbolt as far as I know. Maybe someone will 3d print a dock or something using the m.2 like we want, but you're still stuck with something that isn't very...elegant

If only the deck had thunderbolt all this would be unnecessary... Still, the outcome will be so cool but the real world use kind of defeats the purpose of what the SD does doesn't it? I know I'll be docking, displaying on a bigger screen when at home and that'll probably not look as great even with an upscaling device but I think I speak for most who wouldn't want to go this far for graphical improvements.

Ok here is my plan: Build out the M2 ssd and boot from the Micro SD card. Build in an Thunderbolt 4 PCIe card and wire it up to the USB port. At the end you can close the whole case and the only thing you need to do is docking your deck into an TB4 Dock with an eGPU! Done! What do you think? It looks sleek, works great and you get a ton of extra features. Like you can use your dock with an Thunderbolt 4 Dock as a full fledged desktop with 3 monitors, mouse keyboard and an external drive. So what do you think about my idea?

@CoilWhine
@CoilWhine 2 жыл бұрын
Problem is it doesn't have thunderbolt so it wouldn't work. The key would be having some sort of adapter to where you could remote mount an m.2 slot externally so you could plug/unplug the gpu without having to unscrew anything so you could just unplug it and take it on the go. I do however like the idea of booting off the micro sd, i wonder if it will be fast enough realistically boot off of.

@@iMonZ00 It'd be interesting to see if there's any losses going from nvme -> TB -> gpu vs nvme -> GPU like we're doing. We're already a bit constrained because of the x4 interface, and a razer core or alternative thunderbolt GPU enclosure would add cost, though I'm not sure if they've finally come down in price yet.
@kewlztertc5386
@kewlztertc5386 2 жыл бұрын
This is absurd! With the combined cost of this, and the reduction of portability, it makes no sense. You can just buy a beefy laptop (w/Thunderbolt for eGPU) , and call it a day.

Holy this is a money waste 🤣 if you still can use it portable, sure, this would be kinda cool if still more expensive than a gaming laptop. But like this, can't just unplug your egpu like with a usb-c one, so you made a desktop PC which is more expensive and has worse performance. If you went with a thunderbolt card and figure out a way to fit a separate dedicated USB port for docking it would kinda make sense to put all this money and effort into it.
