These are my specific steps for proofreading a book as a self-published author before a book release to make sure that it is completely ready to publish and that I've covered all my bases. When I proofread I obviously start with a red pen and in this video I'm going to show you what I look for beyond typos and grammatical details, as well as show you how I input those proofreading changes into my document. Hope you enjoy!
If you’d like to see my comparison video on the top three companies I have used to order proof copies (Kindle Direct Publishing, Ingramspark, and Barnes & Noble) I have a video on KZfaq about that here: • How to Create a Proof ...

I really appreciate your videos. I have a series that I have been trying to get done for over four years. I used to be a storyteller, and want to start writing instead. So far every time I have told anyone about my story series, they get super excited to hear more. When I go to write on my story, I get overwhelmed, because of not understanding the process or even how to outline the story. I also deal with predominantly inattentive type ADHD, so getting motivated or organized has been difficult because again, I didn't understand the process. Your videos are thorough and easy to understand. Since I found your videos three months ago, I have made more progress than I have in the entire four years. Now, I have gone from random scene clips on a thumb drive to a full 40k word count and an organized outline for the other two books! Thank you so much for your time and guidance!

Even though my focus is flash and micro, I found your process thorough and helpful. Also, I'm aware of word and phrase over use & repetitiveness but never heard the term word echoes. The latter appears to be more subtle to spot, more specific. And I spied a Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino on your desk. Have you tried the Brown Butter Caramel? ;)

Have you tried using "Edit out loud" its an app on the google play store. It reads out the book to you. I read the book along with the auto-generated voice. And it helps a lot to catch a lot of typos, and what not.

That sounds so cool! I'm a heavy visual learner and with audio I tend to zone out so for me personally I'd probably fail at proofreading that way, but it sounds like a really awesome tool for further back in the editing process! I have also set up Microsoft Word to read out loud (and google docs does too I've been told) so if I can remember how to set that up I might totally add that to my editing process :D

Many writers can proof read , who are English teachers, English majors, writers., Including new writers. I m going back over my novel, revising , proof reading , and my manuscript is also being typed by an English major ,graduate of a university. noted for the writing program ,and us also a writer of some published short stories. One self publisher recommended finding an English teacher to edit . I happen to be qualified as an English teacher. A couple of. previous writing credits other than a novel. I have written a mystery novel. After seeing the videos, I LL Probably just have. my novel.printrd so seeing the comment about print copies is helpful. I m not good at texting yet though.

Do you hire professional proofreaders? I'm asking because I had a highly professional copy editor, who went over my book twice and did a great job, and I wonder if I should just proofread myself or hire someone.
@BethanyAtazadeh

Personally no. I have a team who reads beforehand in exchange for a free copy and I proofread myself. I always find things no matter how good the copy edits are, a copy editor is just one person so they’re bound to miss things.

I can't proofread. Grammarly tells you mistakes and makes word suggestions and sometimes rewrites a whole sentence for you and it is better and you just plug it in.
