So I’m a slow reader. And I mean really slow. When I read fiction, there’s barely any sentence that I won’t stop and read again. Sometimes three or four times. Sometimes it takes 2 hours for me to read 20 pages, and I'm not even exaggerating. Still, I usually log somewhere between 75 and 100 books per year. Not because I have a goal to read that much, but simply because hey I enjoy reading. And I have started to kind of track my reading each week to better see what my reading behaviour is. So, let’s take a look at how I read so much in a year.
I talk about:
- how to find time to read
- how to read several books at once
- what is DNF
- what the goal is
- how to log books
- my thoughts on goodreads
- my thoughts on storygraph
- how to not get distracted
- loving the hobby of reading

I feel like I am a slow reader in the sense that sometimes I find it hard to mantain focus for more than 20 minutes, so what I have been doing lately is reading for short spans and then doing something physical (like washing the dishes or making my bed) and then reading some more. It works!

That's so nice to hear of someone being a slow reader. It feels like everyone is so super quick, eating up 100 pages per hour and such. I'm sooo slow too and it sometimes is hard to not feel bad about it. Nevertheless I actually do have a reading goal but it's like 23 books for 2023 and now 24 books. It's so low that I achieve it already after 6 months or so and it's just a feelgood thing that reminds me that I spend my time with fun stories. Highly recommend if you want to have a reading goal without feeling like a looser 😅 💚

Same! Last year I had a 12 books goal and ended up reading 18. I came back from a reading slump on April and got another on October, so I think it'll be just fine to read my goal of 24 books for this year if I don't stop it for such a long period of time. I just love the number lol

I am also quite a slow reader. Doing to ADHD I also have trouble concentrating at times when reading a book. So I feel your struggle. It´s quite frustrating. Right now I want to get on with some classics of my home country. I´m in love with these old school Viennese Café Authors like Friedrich Torberg (Tante Jolesch is a great book of his) or Adalbert Stifter I´m quite obsessed with lately. They all seem to paint pictures in your head. You could do like an anti haul but with books ;)

I usually read about 10 books at once, and switch between several languages too: I need the varierty! I only read about 40 books last year due to a major health crisis (I almost died in March and had very little energy) but I started the year strong: two books stand out so far: "The Rachel Incident" (it has an amazing audible narrator) and "What I saw and how I lied".

Thank you so much Jenny for this lovely video. I'm currently reading "The Cat Who Saved Books" by Sosuke Natsukawa. The first chapter was a bit sad as it is about a young man who lost his family. But as the story unfolds, it's an easy read and full of beautiful well-written sentences, humor and charm. I think the theme of saving the books is an interesting theme for all book lovers💖

It is so nice to have a full day to just read. Those are fun. I like those days. There were a lot of books I SHOULD NOT have finished last year, but did. I think there was only one book I didn't bother continuing. It's cute how you are logging your book reading. I don't want to have a physical notebook for it, as I have one of those to track the letters I write and receive from penpals, and don't want a build up of notebooks in general. I have used Goodreads for over a decade. I don't have trouble getting into reading. It is so much fun to pick up a book and get into it. I do love the smell of books (including old ones).

I love your video's about books! I loved to read since I was a kid. This winter I got back to reading more than the last years and I love it. I'm currently reading the Grisha books. I didn't know it was a trend at all, because I don't follow any news and also not a lot of social media. Got it send to me by a friend. But I just love the magical world of the story! I am a slow reader myself, and I don't really read fiction anymore. I am getting back to habit reading daily. I am "tricking" myself into it by hitting my daily page count. Total pages of book divided by days in a month = that's my daily page count. My goal for this year is 12 books finished - it is a small number, but I will be well happy if I get there. Currently almost finished with "Why we Sleep. The new science of sleep and dreams" by Matthew Walker.

I have ADHD so I will either be painfully slow with reading and unable to process anything, or read a whole book in one sitting. Not a lot of in-between. But I love reading every single night before bed, often times when I wake up as well. Having both the audio and text helps me focus a lot. I do the same thing with rotating through about 3 books simultaneously. Usually one more challenging book, one easy fiction book (often re-reading a book I love), and a non-fiction audiobook I can listen to a bit more passively.

In 2021 I slayed it because I was volunteering at the local library lmao, but 2022 and 2023 I couldn't reach it because I was too absorbed by other things in life. It doesn't matter, I just set it for a little motivation but if I don't reach it who cares! I also like to read multiple books at once, usually one nonfiction, one fiction and one poetry. For me it's all art. I tend to fluctuate between reading, films, series, visual art, but always always music. Jenny, do you ever find you pick up a book (or even a film, etc.) and you're just not into it at that moment, but it finds you again later on, a month or a year down the track but this time you love it? Sometimes for me it's not the art but the timing that is wrong. I find it interesting because I can never tell exactly why this happens.

Medical books have never been a problem for me, yes I am a medic, but I take my time reading novels. I never actually times myself, but I certainly cannot Read 100 pages in one hour ....that is for sure. When I read a novel, whether it is a thin one or a brick-sized one, I like to absorb the text and all that the writer intended hus/her novel to convey. If I hurry then it would mean I did not read the novel. Ironically, I have my tbr list for this year and it has 44 novels, of those there are at least 47 brick books ( ie: over 850 pages, tiny print, too🙄 but I will try....best that I can do. Why do you have your books without the title showing organized in your bookshelf? Is this a "thing" now? I have been seeing this on Instagram too.....

How to read 100 books in a year: don’t have children lol 😂 Love your book posts. I tend to have 1 main book, two sub books, and an audiobook on the go at all times and I get in about 40 books per year. My most was 137 books a year before I had kids, though some were really short, fast read graphic novels.
