How is this a copyright violation at all? It falls under free speech because this movie isn't using any footage or actual "likeness" of people on the sitcom. It basically would fall under the same thing as if someone did a parody of the sitcom.

@@camtron this is unfortunately a very naive way of thinking. this is how it SHOULD go, but the truth is were he the kind of person to do it, he almost certainly would have won the false claim anyways. thats just how it is.

@@wowitsfrostygames155 I'm not saying people won't make a false claim. Or it wouldn't go to court and probably a settlement. Settlement most often than not doesn't admit guilt on the accused party. But I don't think there would be a chance in hell that a judge would see it as copyright infringement. I get what you're saying though. But if we can't have laws based on principle and laws are based on chance of winning a case instead, then all hope is lost in our country.

What I love most about this is how Will Smith (and I assume, the studio behind Fresh Prince) are encouraging and supporting this independent re-imagining of their intellectual property; they don't feel the need to guard it jealously or overprotect it. More studios should learn from their example.

The fact that Will Smith embraces what someone created around the copyrighted story and material, instead of fighting the creators and slapping a lawsuit or taking down the trailer, I applaud Will Smith for that. We need more of this.

I imagine something like 'Friends' could *try* something like this... but it would just end up being another romance that we've likely seen dozens of times. Plus, too much plot to manage at once, seeing as it centered around six protagonists instead of one.

This is a very true statement. He's such a great actor who could command a presence for serious situations (ie: when they went to jail), be caring when need be (when Wills dad left again) , and be light hearted and fun (every time he through jazzy Jeff out)

I have watched the Fresh Prince of Bel Air episodes so many times over the years, what this highlights is that even though the original show was comedic, it always had that deeper meaning, it showed in a few episodes, and this guy making it in to a film or new tv show had the foresight to see it. I definitely respect this. I grew up on Fresh Prince, I'm 44....so I know all about the show. I dig this because this version is a more dramatic version and it's not all funny and comedic. I'm looking forward to it and I'm hoping that it's a banger though. Like Will said....this is the underlying story that couldn't be told or wasn't in the episodes that he did. I'm rooting for it, let's see how it all plays out. Salute to the write of this, I'll watch it and definitely give it a chance.

I absolutely love this show! My boys now 28 and my youngest would’ve been 26 this past Feb. 12 (he passed Feb. 08, 2021 from recurrent Hodgkin lymphoma when it came back a third time since 2015.) Rest in Peace my son Corey S. Ellis mama loves you so much! We would watch Fresh Prince all the time. They got the dvds of all the episodes one year for Christmas and watched it over and over! So much they could recite the lines along with the actors on the show. My oldest son and I get together and watch the new Bel-Air. It’s so hype so real I can feel the emotion the characters are take you into their own spot on perspective of each experience it’s like you are there going through it with them! I’m so excited for the new season! Episode 1 was epic! Come on episode 2! Love u Will! Huge Fan!
