I was baptized in the Holy Spirit in prison back in 83 when the Catholic chaplain was a charismatic priest came in and heard my confession. I started praying in tongues and receiving visions. When I got out of prison in 85 I was baptized in the Holy Spirit again when I met a healing priest named Father Ralph Diorio and spent 5 hours with him one on one. Been out of prison serving Jesus since

Back in late 90’s I was praying and the gift came to me. Soon after my mother was dying and I wanted to receive communion at her service, I drove to La Salette shrine in Attleboro Ma., I was kneeling praying when a stranger (a mom with children ) approached me, said the priest is ready for you. I was surprised because I had never told anyone I was there for confession. I went into the confessional, started my confession when the priest interrupted me to ask why I was there?, I will admit I answered not nicely that I was there only because I wanted communion and didn’t know where , what church I belonged . I speak in tongues, do you know what that is?”He said “do you know that Jesus loves you ?”. I answered awful but said “yeah, yeah yeah” . He said “no, Jesus loves you, I am the only one hear who speaks in tongues, he asked if he caould pray for me , he knelt down before me with his hands on my head and prayed, it was glorious! Asked me to join the prayer! It was the most wonderful love I have ever experienced. The joy still has not left me. I too have felt it was the Scared Heart of Jesus. All my anger at my mother death left me and was replaced by true love. He explained to me I was charismatic Catholic and that I belonged. I will always be grateful to that priest and that he saw through my awful attitude and brought me closer to Jesus !!!

I can't say the peace that came to me when others prayed over me has stayed with me; I wish I could. Nevertheless, I know what is out there and that is a grace. I suppose you could say I continue to pursue it. It is hard to find: fervent, intimate and effective prayer with Christians who are mature in the Lord and don't resort to 'telling you what to do' but continue to pray for you long after the event. I would love to be loved like that daily and get to the point that I am able to do it with and for others. Freely receive; freely give. I'm sure I belong in community and not out here all alone but I haven't a clue..... My will is strong and I'm not very good at recognizing and listening to the still small voice or obeying. I'm sure I need prayer for that.

The shakers and quakers also relied on physical manifestations and emotions to determine the reality of their spirituality . The holy rollers were likewise occupied. What Christ requires is not out feelings or physical wrythings or mystical linguistic outbursts but rather the commitment of the will. No one was ever saved because of how they felt but only by what they willed.

My arm tingled for hours and my face was very red the rest of the day. I received the gift of tongues, but it felt odd and I fought it for a long time. Fr. Mark, you are an inspiration! The first video I watched, I could see you are filled with the Holy Spirit. You're truly a bright light in this dark world. I am so disillusioned at what's happening to the Catholic Church and how the hierarchy is removing Priests everywhere for speaking Truth, at times I consider leaving the Church. Hearing heresy from the pulpit here in NY continually has made me stop going to Mass. I'm so thankful to see you and several other Priests like Fr. Altman that are courageous enough to keep true to God's word. God Bless you Fr. Mark!
@stephencuskley5251
@stephencuskley5251 2 жыл бұрын
Robin, I wrote this for people who are praising Father Mark for his use of "speaking in tongues" and people who don't quite know what to make of "speaking in tongues". I happen to disagree with Father Mark, but it's not just my opinion. I see that you and I are on the same page -- we both support Father Altman. Yay! Anywho, if you want to find out how "speaking in tongues" actually works, you may want to read this. Just keep in mind that I'm not talking down to you. It's meant essentially for people who have an erroneous notion of "speaking in tongues". But one more thing. Please, please, please, please, please don't even THINK about leaving the Church!!! We NEED you, kiddo! And may Our Lady bring you ever closer to herself and her Son, Our Lord Jesus -- and to God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, too! Here goes... I love Father Mark. I believe he's a good and holy priest, and absolutely sincere, but I think that he has fallen into a common error. Essentially, he relies on the fact that "speaking in tongues” gives him spiritual benefits. But it's all down to his own "personal experience", which, according to all the saints and orthodox Catholic theologians, is exactly the wrong way to judge anything spiritual. I don’t doubt that Father Mark has received spiritual benefits, but as to how that occurred I can’t say. But I think he’s simply mistaken. After all, there are lots of saints who were wrong about lots of things. Even St. Thomas Aquinas was wrong about the Immaculate Conception. But he was still a saint. If anyone thinks that Father Mark is correct, here are a few videos to consider. Just copy and Google the titles -- they're next to the numbers. 1. Speaking in Tongues, Exorcist Fr Ripperger, is it real? If you don't have much time, just watch this one. It's short and sweet and gets right to the point. By the way, besides being an exorcist, Father Ripperger, Ph.D. is a BRILLIANT orthodox Catholic philosopher and theologian in the school of St. Thomas Aquinas, author of several scholarly books and a prolific podcaster. He has also appeared as a guest of other orthodox Catholic podcasters (e.g. Dr. Taylor Marshall and Father Heilman’s US Grace Force). ALL of Father Ripperger's videos are FANTASTIC (just Google “Father Ripperger KZfaq”). I especially recommend “Spiritual Theology Series: Levels of Prayer - Fr Ripperger”. It’s basically an explanation of the spiritual theology of St. Teresa of Avila, a Doctor of the Church. One of the biggest problems of people who “speak in tongues” is that they think that because they experience delightful feelings when they do it that they have “ARRIVED” (that they’ve reached the pinnacle of spirituality). But as Father Ripperger explains in this video, that’s only the BEGINNING of spirituality. There’s a whole lot of work to do before you become a saint, and he lays out all the steps that St. Teresa gave us. Is it simple to become a saint? Yes. St. Thomas Aquinas said that all we have to do is “to will it”. But there’s a world of difference between simple and easy. It’s a “simple” act to lift a 300-pound barbell over your head, but it sure ain’t “easy!” Is it easy to become a saint? No. It’s extremely difficult. But then again, it’s entirely possible. Just watch the video. It’s a step-by-step roadmap to becoming a saint. I also recommend watching “State of the Spiritual Battlefield - Fr. Ripperger”. It’s about how HELL attacks and destroys a culture from the perspective of a man who actually TALKS WITH DEMONS. It’s solid, orthodox Catholic teaching, and besides, it’s more riveting than watching the movie, “The Exorcist”. And when it comes to relying on feelings to evaluate the state of your soul, consider St. Mother Teresa. One day one of her nuns came to her and said that she was suffering from spiritual dryness, which is essentially getting no consolations from God and getting absolutely no feeling of the presence of God in your life. Mother Teresa told her that it’s a normal experience. But the nun complained that it was going on for weeks! Mother Teresa told her that she, too, was experiencing spiritual dryness. The nun then asked Mother Teresa how long she was experiencing dryness, and Mother Teresa answered, “Eleven years.” Mother Teresa knew that faith is a matter of the intellect, and that it had nothing to do with how you feel. By the way, Mother Teresa suffered spiritual dryness until she died. But she endured it all for God and became a saint! 2. Four MISCONCEPTIONS about GIFT OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES ( Joseph Dinesh ) This is a much longer video, but well worth watching. It’s by a Catholic layman, but he’s completely orthodox, faithful, and highly knowledgeable. It reinforces Father Ripperger’s points, but it offers additional arguments against “speaking in tongues”, including some “just plain common sense” arguments. 3. On the Errors of Pentecostalism (aka Charismatic Movement) This video is from Sensus Fidelium (can’t get any more orthodox Catholic than that). The content is straight from Father John Hardon’s catechism and Saint John of the Cross, who is a Doctor of the Church and one of the greatest Catholic mystics of all time, and the video gets pretty deep, but it also zeroes in on the fallacy of relying on “personal experience” to judge spiritual matters. PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Watch these videos and consider their content.

@@stephencuskley5251 thank you for your response and I don't take it negatively. I believe Fr. Mark, whether or not he speaks in tongues, to be a Holy, Spirit-filled man of God. I left the Church for 20 years and attended a non-denominational Christian Church, where many spoke in tongues. The gifts of the Spirit, tongues being one if them, isn't given to everyone, including myself, but any of these gifts shouldn't be used as a test to measure one's spirituality. I returned to the Church 10 years ago, after much prodding by the Holy Spirit. I truly believe I was hearing from the Lord. I learned to love the Bible and read it daily, which was never encouraged in the Catholic Church so for that I'm grateful. I just don't see how true Catholics, not fake ones that claim to be "devout", but publically promote/support homosexual lifestyles, abortion, etc., including many Priests, can stay together. The many "canceled" Priests is proof the hierarchy is so infected, all the way to the top, I fear the Church may be lost. I will continue to pray daily for guidance.

Four MISCONCEPTIONS about GIFT OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES ( Joseph Dinesh ) This is by a Catholic layman, but he’s completely orthodox, faithful, and highly knowledgeable. It reinforces Father Ripperger’s points, but it offers additional arguments against “speaking in tongues” plus some “just plain common sense” arguments. 3. On the Errors of Pentecostalism (aka Charismatic Movement) This video is from Sensus Fidelium (can’t get any more orthodox than that) The content is straight from Father John Hardon’s catechism and Saint John of the Cross, who is a Doctor of the Church and one of the greatest Catholic mystics of all time, but the video zeroes in on the fallacy of relying on “personal experience” to judge spiritual matters. PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Watch these videos and consider their content. Note to Father Mark. I’m sure you’ve seen this reply many times by now. @@stafh8931 I'm glad you posted this. I thought that tongues were for the benefit of the community when they could be interpreted by another. Like when all heard the apostles at Pentecost in their own languages. The charismatic movement seems to often be for personal feelings. I went to a meeting in the 90's and people were howling, laughing and yelling in front of the monstrance. It did not edify me to witness this.

Praised be Jesus Christ! Christ is born! Father, Mr. Goring, as far as I know, the gift of tongues is the language of the Holy Spirit. And it means that you speak the word of God in your native language, and the other person understands what you’re saying without knowing your native language. It happens spiritually through the Holy Spirit who talks to the soul of the person & consciousness.

I was a cradle Catholic. I was 23 years old. I was watching a Protestant preacher on TV who asked if anyone wanted to pray the sinner’s prayer to do so with him. I sincerely got down on my knees and asked Jesus to be the Lord of my life. My heart was set on fire for the word of God. I knew we had a Bible somewhere so I started digging through closets and storage boxes until I found it. I began to read it with a hunger I had never known. When I told a friend about this one day she had a man visiting her and he asked if I had received the gift of tongues. I said no. So he prayed with me and encouraged me until I began to speak in a language that I didn’t know. I was filled with joy. That was 40 years ago and I still pray in tongues and I’m still in love with Jesus and continuing to grow in my Catholic faith. Thank you for your words of encouragement and prayers. They are especially needed during these trying days that our church and the entire world are currently going through. I pray that God continues to bless your ministry and raises up more Catholic leaders and laity to lead the church and keep us all on that narrow path that will eventually lead us to our true home.

I don’t doubt that Father Mark received spiritual benefits, but as to how that occurred I can’t say. But I think he’s simply mistaken. After all, there are scads of saints who were wrong about lots of things. Even St. Thomas Aquinas was wrong about the Immaculate Conception. But he was still a saint. If anyone thinks that Father Mark is correct, here are a few videos to consider. Just copy and Google the titles after the numbers. I received the gift of tongues when I was 12 years old. My mother also had the gift as well. We also attended charismatic prayer groups and I felt the love of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and prayed for the gift. I fell away from the church for many years and within the last 10 years came back to the church and had all but forgotten this special gift. I only pray in tongues a few times because I feel unworthy at times to have such a tremendous gift. But Father, You have inspired me to use my gift and you and your mother brought a smile to my face as I thought of my late Mom and me going to charismatic services and when I received the gift of tongues. Thank you!!! God has spoken thru you to me today!

Fr. Mark - I second this. Please understand - we do love and appreciate you. But this modern so-called "Charismatic movement" way of allocating into themselves a counterfeit of an authentic and powerful Spiritual gift is a major error which can lead to further errors in faith and unintended spiritual consequences. This euphoric religious sentiments+unintelligible babble is NOT the spiritual gift of tongues. It is a gift of actually understanding human languages otherwise unknown. So many are too addicted to the good feelings of willing certain spiritual emotions to understand that this is a grave misuse of an authentic and rare Spiritual gift given by God for purposes beyond the spiritual consolation/satisfaction of the one doing it. This isn't right. Please, I know it's going to be tough after having this in your prayer life for so long, but I'm begging you to consider this truthfully and doctrinally. It's leading souls astray.

What helped was watching The Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston,New Year’s day 1986. Though I still didn’t for a while after that how Jesus was the Son of God and God at the same time. The last 35 year’s have been one HELL of a Cross,and still IS. God bless. Praise Jesus and Mary always!!! My mom loved that movie and all christian movies but that was my favorite as a kid having to sit through religious movies with her. Lilia the water girl and Joshua were couple goals. Nefertiti woman goals. Last time I watched that movie I was bored. I had long since out grown it.

What are the benefits of praying in tongues? Tongues remind us of the Spirit's indwelling presence; it is the door way to the supernatural. It keeps us continually aware of the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence. Praying in tongues helps us to be conscious of God, of His indwelling presence.

Fr. Mark Goring: Thank you for the witness to the gift of tongues. I Spent 5 years with a Franciscan community. The mother house was in Pennsylvania. There were 5 of us novices there for our year and a day. We had a novice brother who had the "gift of tongues." I don't know if it was really the gift of tongues or not but I left myself open to the option that it could be the gift of tongues. I am not brilliant by any stretch of the imagination and the community would be the first to approve that I was the light bulb with a broken filament. That is not my purpose though. The young man who had this gift of the Holy Spirit was brilliant and very charismatic. He made some type of chatter one day for me and said it was the "gift of tongues." I met a stigmatist that year as well. The stigmatist was a friend of one of the old retired friars at the monastery. I didn't know the guest at the house was a stigmatist. The brother who had the gift of tongues was with me working in the court yard and the stigmatist was walking through the court yard saying his rosary. The brother yelled out "He's bleeding" and ran over to see the man who was bleeding. I hustled over thinking that first aid may need to be administered. The stigmatist started pleading with us "no, no please no!" The brother started pleading please let me see, please." I stopped and thought to myself "what is the meaning of this?" The stigmatist pleaded with us not to tell anyone what we witnessed. I shut my mouth and thought to myself that if that was what the man requested of me there had to be a reason for his request. That reason was between him and God. I honored his request. These things are for real. I am a nobody as far as anything like this ever occurring to me. I couldn't interpret tongues and I knew that I didn't have to because either God is or isn't and the only thing that sets with an individual and God belief is a yes or a no. I also realize that some people can speak more than one language fluently. to evangelize and witness for the love of God in those languages is also the gift of tongues. To translate paperwork from one language into another for immigrants to receive medical treatment or citizenship papers in the United States, and do it for free is the gift of tongues. To stand in front of an arrogant judge and translate into english for those who are truly persecuted and refugees trying to assimilate into the United States is a gift of tongues as well. God works through every one of them. To be a Catholic theologian who can read and write in the classic languages and teach a class of RCIA students how to properly interpret scripture in the classic languages is also a gift of tongues. God bless the priests, brothers and sisters who do these things. God bless the lay people who give pure testimony in things like stigmatism and tongues to save peoples lives. God bless people of different faith beliefs who do the same.

Perhaps it’s more meritorious but still very difficult and can harden a person

If anyone cannot understand what your saying then it's not a gift of the Holy Spirit. The gift if tongues is to speak in the language of another or have them hear you in their own tongue even though you speak your own. The spirit will only give clarity not obscurity.

I am very confused about the meaning speaking in "tongues " I wish you would have first explained what it meant. when i look up the meaning I still don't understand. I thought when the apostles started speaking in tongues it meant they were given the gift to speak many languages so that they could go and spread the Gospel in the world.

On the first Pentecost, what the Apostles received was surely the gift of tongues, but what Fr. was explaining was one of the Charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit, a tongue, that though unintelligible to others, is so to God and is used primarily for worship.... It is also the only one of the Charismatic gifts that are meant for oneself, all the others being for others.... For edifying others.

That is definitely what it should have meant. It would have made total sense. Maybe it actually did mean that? I wish. If you want to see people speaking in so called tongues, all you have to do is search for a video. I'm surprised you've never seen it. Robert De Niro does it creepily well in the final scene when he's drowning in "Cape Fear" (Circa 1991). I used to think of it as a Pentecostal thing. The snake handlers do it. I never heard of Catholics speaking in tongues until now. You can also easily see all kinds of evangelical christians supposedly doing it. It sounds like gibberish. Google a video of people speaking in tongues.

Maria. I'm a traditional Catholic, too, and I am skeptical about "the gift of tongues". I wrote the comments below for people who have been praising Father Mark for his promotion of "tongues", so please don't think I'm talking down to you. But if you're interested in finding out more about "the gift of tongues" you may want to read this. Just copy and Google the titles -- they’re next to the numbers.

No offense Father Mark but... I'm Chaldean and we speak modern Aramaic. The word "languages" in Aramaic is "tongues". Tongues means speaking in a language from another country or people, a language that exist. It doesn't mean speaking in a language only God understands. A new 75 year old friend started speaking briefly in "tongues" in front of me, it sounded so satanic, like black magic sounds out of a witches brew ect... It means a language that exist in the current world. No offense Father, but your zeal blinds you to the truth and the devil plays on that.

I have also heard of the gift of tongues being the ability to spread the Good News in a language you actually don't have any history of speaking. After Pentecost the Bible says the apostles were able to communicate with people from far off lands who were visiting Jerusalem. Each heard the apostles in their own language. Is this a different gift?
