Because my car is an incredibly beat up and old specimen, it actually only plays cassettes, CDs, and the radio. Since my laptop doesn't have a CD drive and I happen to own a double cassette deck boombox, I record a lot of my own playlists onto tapes for the sole purpose of listening to music in the car. This video goes over the process I go through to create and record those playlists.
This video is a part of my website, LOUD+SCUFFED.

Here's a link to Jeff Rosenstock's Bandcamp page if you were curious. His songs are all bangers: jeffrosenstock.bandcamp.com/m...

@@herotolegend makes sense haha, it's the same situation on my end now - the audio is warbled and makes weird clicking noises when i record now, and the audio gets kinda funky and *wavy* when playing on the top deck - emerson isn't the most amazing manufacturer unfortunately if you ever see a sony one in good condition though, make sure to snag it - my sony cassette deck / stereo set is still going strong after a loooong life

I think it's cool having cassette recordings of your playlists. If you're car only has a cassette player though, you can buy an aux to cassette adapter, one side plugs into your device/cd player and the other looks like a cassette. They were popular when cars started getting CD players but not all had them, you could connect your portable CD player to your car using the cassette deck.

The reason for C46 cassettes is because it perfectly fits the maximum length of a vinyl LP. C120 cassettes can be problematic, not because of the length, but because the tape is much thinner.

I would recommend getting a proper tape deck for a component stereo system if you want the BEST possible recordings. You don't necessarily need a Nakamichi Dragon, just some cheap tape deck from the 90s will do. (I reccomend a Sony TC-WE305)

I actually recently just snagged a whole Sony 2002 stereo set with a functioning proper tape deck for 50 bucks from a garage sale recently (worth it, it had functioning play + record functions for tapes as well as a cd player and radio) and I absolutely agree - the difference in quality is definitely noticable!

Love this video and the comments. A modern spin on something my generation did all the time. This isn't a criticism of any of the contributors or their questions and I'm sorry if anyone takes it that way. To someone who grew up with cassette tapes as their main or major music format, they just highlight how quickly they have disappeared from the mainstream when people are genuinely asking questions about recording on both sides or how a C60 is only good for 30 mins.(yes, you need to turn it over unless you have auto-,reverse). Like how you are using a "retro" boombox, by the way. Anyone new to cassettes who bought a modern deck, I fear would be sorely disappointed with the sound quality. Even though yours would have been a fairly budget device at the time it was made, I'm almost certain it sounds better than modern ones that can cost hundreds.

Hey there. (1) I totally agree with you on the C 120 blank cassettes. (2) If you have something like a C90 blank cassette you want to record on you have two separate albums you want to record on that tape it's always a good idea to record the longest album first. Make sure you use the same side of the tape you plan to record the longest album of the two first. After you record that album, play it back first. If it sounds good enough all the way, once the very last track ends, let it run a few seconds. After that, pull out any remaining blank recording tape & dispose of it.😀

To be honest, this has been a thing since the introduction of CD back in the eighties. My Dad would make mixtapes from cds that he would get or borrow from friends on to his stereo system with the CD player having an output to go into the tape deck. And then there is an input for CD player that goes into the tape deck and can be synced to record and play on both machines. Years later when I was in high school, back when everyone had iPods and iTunes in the mid to late 2000s. I used my iPod and a aux cable with an RCA on one end and plugged that into my stereo which has the tape deck connected in both input and output for the source coming from the stereo, and I would record mixtapes or albums that I got of iTunes to play in the car or on the boombox that we had lying around in the garage. And to this day I still record stuff like that for the last 17 years. I even used my computer to record stuff off KZfaq or other stuff the same way. Plus if you have a stereo receiver from the late nineties, make sure that it has a input for DVD/ VHS or Laserdisc with RCA audio input or optical audio cable inputs as you can record audio off of those on to the cassette if you have live DVD concerts that are not on CD or streaming services.

It didn't turn out that great, prob bc of either the equipment or some fault of my own, but seeing this video makes me want to try it again when I get back home. You can totally record off KZfaq - most of my music just happens to be already downloaded onto my laptop. The main variant in audio quality comes from whatever deck/boombox you're recording from - while this boombox recorded alright enough when I made this video, it's on its last legs now, and the audio quality is nowhere near as nice as that of my new one. In addition, RCA cables will definitely give you higher quality than straight AUX if you have that option.

The recording deck needs to have an Aux input jack. Very important detail there. The songs are going from a tablet's headphone jack into the boombox's input. Also: People should always wait a solid 10 to 12 seconds after pressing Record, before starting the playlist of tunes. The "empty"/white tape that is at the beginning of every cassette takes that amount of time to play--- and then the brown tape starts after it, which is what picks up the actual audio being recorded. Wouldn't want the beginning moment of a song to not be included on the playlist cassette.
