How I retired at 38 to live in Bali - 5 Money Concepts that helped me get there faster

It took only 4 years of dedicated investing and financial planning to get to my target retirement passive income amount (modest as the target was, but I did start with only a small amount of savings to work off). This is my story of how a decade or so of living simply within my means (generally leading a minimalistic needs-based life) and 4 years of actual action allowed me & my husband to retire a year ago at age 38 and move to Bali to live the best versions of our lives whilst we are still young, active and healthy to enjoy all the activities we truly love.
Timeline: I'd quit my Big Law corporate job before i turned 30. It took me about 4 or so years of wandering around Asia to build up a new set of livelihood skills, learn about different ways of life and philosophies and to crystallize that my own life goal was not the pursuit of wealth per se, but the pursuit of a simple but comfortable life built around activities that was meaningful to me. From that point, the goal of reaching a state where i could comfortably live & do what i wanted in a place i loved, Bali, without having to work a 9-5 or run a business was born. 4 years of dedicated planning and investment action later, we actually actualised our dream and we've been happily living in Bali ever since.
Sharing our story and the 5 money concepts that sped up our journey to FIRE here in the hopes that if your own life goals are similar, then know that it's possible and it could potentially happen in just a number of years.
We all deserve to have a chance at living our best life whilst we're here!

Most people don’t realise it, but the secret to retiring comfortably is finding a way to make returns while your money works for you. My dad, as I remember, started saving for retirement quite late, but I know he was making more than 10k returns from his investment monthly and it was completely passive.

Not really. Approximately four years before to my dad's retirement, our family was introduced to a financial advisor. That was the catalyst for the transformation. I believe my retirement income would be on the right track because I've been using the same advisor.

This is my fifth year after retirement. I’e been following the 4% rule thing I saw on a youTube channel, but this isn’t really how hard I expected things to be. After I cashed out a lump sum, I still have about $760k left, but at this rate, and with how the market is (we were putting money away in an index fund), I’m starting to get really worried.

Not a lot of people are able to save that much in a lifetime. But now you are retired and depend on your investment, it’s best you redistribute your capital. To simplify the process, you could allocate your resources with the help of a financial advisor.

I’m closing in on retirement, too, and I have benefitted so much from using a financial advisor. I didn’t start early, so I knew the compound interest of index fund investing would not work for me. Funny how I pulled in more profit than some of my peers who had been investing for many years.

I didn't become financially independent until I was in my late 30's, and I'm still in my 30's. In addition to having purchased my second home and earning money on a monthly basis through passive income, I've also achieved three out of five goals. I just hope this inspires someone to realize that it doesn't matter if you don't have any of these things yet, you can start today no matter your age. Change your future by investing! I made a rather big decision by investing in the financial market.

Hi Jean, I wish I had heard this lesson 20 or 30 years ago. I’ve spent my whole adult life caught in the rat race. I admire your courage as a couple to make these life changes. Here in Canada we are taught and encouraged to live to work, a process installed by big businesses many years ago. People like Tim Ferris and Robert Kiyosaki have helped to let a new generation understand there is another way. I give thier books to young people I think will be receptive to such a change. Thank you for sharing your experience, tips and concepts. Please keep it up. One related lesson I’ve learned is to find a partner who shares this desire for a different lifestyle and getting out of the rat race. Steve (66yrs) Manitoba Canada

Hello Steve, I am glad to hear your stories. I'm currently applying for a student visa from IRCC, which hopefully can help me get a PR afterward. On the other hand, I am also worried about the high living expenses in Vancouver, BC - trying to rent or buy an apartment, working in a company to get local work experience to be eligible for citizenship(I am an entrepreneur and have run my own business for 8 years ), and all that kinds of things. After reading your comments, I realize that why would I put myself into that rat race?! I am still happy to go to Canada to attend school because it will help scale up my business, but I think I will not care about PR as much as I used to. Thank you for your sharing!

"Most big, deeply satisfying accomplishments in life take at least five years to achieve. This can include building a business, cultivating a loving relationship, writing a book, getting in the best shape of your life, raising a family, and more. Five years is a long time. It is much slower than most of us would like. If you accept the reality of slow progress, you have every reason to take action today. Hi Jean!! Random person here! I watched the full video and I have to say, first thank you for sharing this kind of information, and second, I miss the first and main concept, at least obvious for me while I was seen your video. It gave me the feeling that the moment you met Vitaly, you was loving yourself much more and you were giving love to another person, so the more love, the more abundance, the more money you got. We don't give so many importance to love when we speak about money, but I think that's another variable in the formula. Lots of love for everyone!!❤

@@JeanVoronkova True, my FIRE story helped me discover what genuinely drives me personally. The main takeaway from my 4 years in early retirement was that you do not actually retire. You got to work either way, sometimes even more. Moreover, the allure of your interest that drove you to early retirement can fade away once it becomes your new job. I also discovered that you do not need to quit your job to be creative or do something fulfilling. An overall positive attitude is what is needed no matter what you are doing and opportunities come your way. Alternately, you do not become automatically happy once you retire early. Good and bad days are part of your life...you cannot eliminate them. Last but not least - never say never :)

It seems that many want to retire without working before retirement 😂😂😂. Studying until mid 30 and retiring with 38 is nice but what is going on when you are 70 years old? Life is easy and beautiful when you're young but when you pass the 60 you have still 30 years of life ahead and it can be long without money. Look how many westerners are moving to SEA because they can't afford to live in their home country.

The stock market isn’t just a get-rich-quick scheme; it can be a way to build sustainable wealth. However, it is possible to lose (rather than gain) wealth through the stock market. At age of 22 I was earning almost 3 times what my dad was earning, still living at home and my Dad caught sight of one of my payslips one day. Eeek! First he demanded I pay rent to my mum ( ha ha!! ) and he also made me speak with his Co-Op insurance guy. My Dad made me sign up for pensions and savings on the spot, they barely made a dent into my money at the time so I didn't notice the money missing each month. Ten years later when my daughter was born we were able to build her the nursery my wife and I wanted, I bought a new car ( and driving lessons at age 34! ) and quit my job for 3 months to be with my wife to learn how to be parents, all on those simple savings that had grown. The original pension is long frozen but it was a lesson and was replaced with a bigger and better one that I've been paying my own money into at 10% for 17 years, that with my work pension at 15%, the mortgage paid off 2 years ago and debts almost sorted and I'm still 10-15 years from retirement. My Dad kicked my arse about money and he's still going strong at 82 and whie hes not a rich man he makes his money and small pensions he has work for him. He wasn't a financial whizz, he just had a serious knack for good common sense!

Sooooo good Jean! What a great breakdown! Loved this. I've been seeing your videos popup on youtube here in bali and it was awesome to hear your story. I am 36 and right behind you I think! Katrin is 28 and is basically going to make both of us look like we weren't even trying haha.

Hi Gabriel thanks for the kind note 🤓 actually after posting this I flew to Singapore and I feel like such an odd duck in the midst of this hustle and bustle here! I do think taking your courage in your hands to go against the grain is one of the hardest parts of this journey we’re on perhaps, maybe more than amassing the money, but the good news is that it does get a lot easier down the road (when all the naysayers see that you didn’t just starve to death and keel over 😅) good luck!!
