Hey thanks for the shout out! Underwater locations and caves have been one of my favourite environments for atmosphere. Fantastic places for unique immersive experiences and encounters.

I should mention, when he’s talking about Breathing Solutions he’s right that the list is very short for any race without the Amphibious/Child of the Sea feature (Sea Elves, Tritons, & Water Genasi). A water breathing spell, or a scroll or potion A polymorph/shapechange spell or scroll -- turn into sea creatures Alter Self - using the Aquatic Adaptation option A Druid's Wild Shape, if you have a Druid in the party A control water spell or scroll -- create air bubbles for you to breathe Cloak of the manta ray Cap of water breathing Necklace of adaptation

Great video - a lot of visual interest. I appreciate both the summaries of RAW, and the homebrew suggestions. Here’s another aspect to consider, though I imagine not all tables will appreciate it: My party recently battled an amphibious eldritch beast, and after we killed it, decided to search for loot in the depths of its lair. Our DM and several players had some SCUBA experience. I made the mistake of commenting that water-breathing probably protects us from getting the bends. DM decided, no it doesn’t, so we have to make CON saves when coming back up. AND while we’re in the depths, we have to make WIS saves against nitrogen narcosis. It was pretty hilarious: my character saved a couple companions who failed their WIS saves and were going to get lost chasing colorful fish or illusory shinies - only to badly fail my own CON save on the ascent and suffer 3 points of exhaustion. Fortunately, the battle was already over! Everyone enjoyed those additional points of realism & kept a sense of humor about it.

This video game at a great time. I was thinking about running an Underwater Campaign and trying to figure out a lot of those things. Thank you so much this saves me a lot of research time

god damn those drowning rules are way more forgiving than pathfinder, what I normally play. For pathfinder it's straight up 2x your con score in rounds and after the last round your considered drowning and fall unconscious. If your not allowed to breath one round after that you just die. Most of the other rules seem to be much the same, though i think you swim slower without a swim speed and you do half damage with non piercing weapons. On a note with underwater combat. as you mentioned it is 3D space so flanking has a lot more spaces it can be used in so be creative. Also sneaking is pretty hard when, well, theres not much cover.

B/X rules Had a lightning bolt act as a fireball under water.

When i run flying or swimming encounters ill put my minis on a d6 or a d12 and the number they're standing on signifies how many feet high they are.
