I'D LIKE TO SHARE SOME PERSONAL SALES ADVICE: I have kept all my conversations with customer professional. Our estimate truck is professional. Our documents are professional. And I have been charging retail and more, pricing. From what I've learned over the years, is that keeping your image professional, allows you to charge retail pricing. We are a very small construction company, but the image and vibe that the crew, and I (estimator) give off, makes the company seem bigger than we are. We are very professional. Also, communication is very important. Make sure to call the customer if you are running late, or arriving early. Better a phone call or text to the customer, than not. It goes a long way. This is just some personal advice that i just wanted to share with everyone; it's very basic, I know. This advice may or may not work for you/your business. Doesn't hurt to try :)

Every single thing you say in this video fits me perfect😬 Thank you for your advises👍 I'm a Hispanic with short military hair cut and look like a gang member😏 Sucks but I'm a realistic person. Good thing about me is that I dress to impress and smile when I talk to customers. But still learning to be organized and talk professionally. I know I can make it and I will make it. Thank you!

Man I have alot in common with you. The battered women shelters and things. I'm really sorry to hear about that stuff, I know how tough it can be. I left home at 16 and my brother was threw out at 13, through my entire 20's I tried to get my mom away from her abusive husband. When I was 30 she finally left him for good and we've been living together for 3 years now. I've been maning up and building a life for us plus trying to build our family. Slowly I've became the man that we both needed in our lives when I was little and I'm growing every facet of life that I can while trying to influence others and help them find direction in life. Before long I'll be able to start buying a home for us to continue to grow in, also I have my brother here now and I'm trying to help him straighten out himself too! I'm just so happy to finally be self aware and improving my life while helping change perspectives in others!

Dude... I got so frustrated with Lanscaping first year that by the next summer I had sold all of my equipment; trailer, 48in snapper pro, 36in bobcat, backpack blower and my pick up... stupid of me because the next season my phone was ringing off the hook from people I had given my card to the previous year. Needless to say I'm getting back into the game with a whole new strategy and your videos are really helping me out. Keep the coming brother. GL from Jersey

Keith I know this video is from a while back, but I enjoyed watching this. You are always willing to share and most people probably think that it's no big deal that you do. It is a big deal to me as I have always felt that with a mentor I could conquer the world. For instance, a coach had taken me under his wings and really coached me, I could have played college ball, if my step-father had really showed me all the ins and outs of owning his own business I could have started my own roofing business. Well now I wish I had a mentor in this business to help me with all of my questions outside of just watching videos as I really want to be successful in this industry. What I got most from this video is the part where you talked about poor attracting poor and being able to shut my mouth and let the customer do all the talking. I do talk too much. I hope that I want to be successful and so I will continue to watch and feed off of those of you who are willing to share instead of hogging all of the knowledge. Thank you sir for this.

Wow the end of the video got me. I've walked and still walk is similar shoes as you shared. It truly is inspiring that you have overcome and succeeded. I'm transitioning out of 21 seasons in the field, to only sales next season. I'm very nervous and uneasy, but I will do this. If you can. I can. Hard work ALWAYS pays off in some way. Thanks for everything Keith 👊

I'm laughthing out load at your advice because it's so true and I'm embarrassed that I've been in business since 2009 and still making the same mistakes , Im always Pricing too low I seem to attract wiedos due to me getting to personal and listening to there personal problems!! One customer got so personal they starting buying Christmas presents for my kids and even delivered them on Christmas morning!!.. I find it hard and frustrating that I have so many jobs that I want to drop and try dropping I ignore there calls and avoid them but they will turn up at my door at night and I go back again. I'm constantly so tired and worn out doing shit pay jobs and cant afford to employ any one.!! I've watched a few of your videos and it really has changed the way I think and I'm now making a plan to do things differently . Thanks I'm David from the UK

I'm at the beginning of starting my own business and you nailed it. It's all about selling your services and working up to that higher clientele. I've worked for the nitpicking penny pincher and let me tell you, I should of walked away. But my pride got a hold of me. But the lesson was learned. Keep the videos going you've helped me a lot. Also, do you have a video about your reasons not to cut lawns? I do agree with you that buying a $10k mower getting $20 a lawn makes no sense. But it seems to get some repeat customers and to complete some jobs, you just need a ZT mower. I'd love to get your thoughts on that. Thanks

Where you talk about your life growing up in difficult situations it literally felt like someone was talking about my own life. I grew up with parents who abused alcohol and drugs, was in a woman's battered shelter on Martin Luther king Dr in Flint, Mi. Since I was 14 my parents & little bro have been addicts of opioids, I brought my dad back to life a couple years ago from heroin overdose, I was homeless living in my car at 18 to get away from it while just starting my landscaping career at Todd's Services near Ann Arbor, after work I had to find showers at campgrounds and what not then do it over again and again. Now I'm 24 years old and am a Landscape supervisor but I'm starting my own business this year and I just completed my first bid on a 70 foot retaining wall. As unfortunate as our up bringing may have been it provided the fire & resolve from within to do better, to be better than that. Could've went the other path of self destructive habits and dwelling in depression but used those experiences as a motivating factor of what not to be. Lots of RESPECT for you man!

Wow! Can you explain a little bit of your college credentials? I'm currently 18 in my first year in college going for a degree in mechanical engineering. I currently own a small local moving company doing pretty well but have the equipment to have a lawn/landscaping company (42inch zero-turn, push mower, stihl weedeaters, backpack blowers, trailer. and a truck). I plan on launching next spring (2018) in the new season while right now getting into the leaf removal market. I hate college, im just bad at time management but with someone with college experience do you think i'm doing something smart by putting my college aside and pursuing these local services? My goal is to be my own boss and to run a successfull company, i think i can achieve it. But should i stay in college to have a backup plan? Share your thoughts, thanks for any respond given.

Geat Video! (Sorry to hear about your mom) 19yrs ago, my very 1st. Truck, 99 F150 was stolen & a young man, superstar in lawn & landscape, I was excited to hire, his Chevy Beretta was stolen in a 10 day span. Between the 2 vehicles, all our company shirts were gone. We were attempting a presence in the "Henry Ford" old $ area of west Dearborn. I bought a 1986 Bronco 2 from a friend for $600 I still had my trailer and equipment. We were kicking ass taking names keeping our heads Held High in our shity Bronco 2 and shity clothes & getting work done. I'll never forget showing up to a big-money house in west Dearborn, (historic Henry Ford neighborhood). Confident as can be in my 1986 Bronco 2 filthy dirty with my colleague, and literally being chased from the premises by an older Indian man. Who refused to take any of our qualifications into account, chase us away because of our appearance. It sucked.

Just came back from hurricane Matthew with just a truck and dump trailer tree service, made in my first week 15000, not all profit but most, first year in business! Thinking about adding a lawn and landscape service, to my professional tree climbing service, for more frequent repeat business. Due to the fact its such a "cut throat" business and about half your customers may stay loyal, and the turn around rate is very slow often many years... where lawn care and landscaping is almost a residual income monthly or yearly. But when big disasters strike I don't really want the tie down on the b.s. work.... In your experience of doing these fields what would you concentrate your efforts? Stick to where you make more money in less time and hours or, drive all over gods green earth trying to make all your weekly customers happy? Or do All of it and hire more ppl once you have the work?

Great video! This is the kind of stuff I've been tryin to drill into the head of a friend of mine. He's got more experience in the landscaping business, but when it comes to sales he's not very knowledgeable. He thinks that showing up to do an estimate in between jobs, while your clothes are dirty is acceptable and actually better... I guess his mind set is that he doesn't want people to think that they are his only customer or that he wants them to know that he's busy working. Idk but I've tried telling him he needs to keep a clean polo shirt or button down shirt and wet wipes with him at all times just in case, but some people are so set in their ways you can't change them.

I’m trying to start my own lawn care company and I have been doing the door to door approach to try and gain customers, I am primarily focused on lawn care such as edging, trimming, and lawn mowing, I am having issues trying to calculate on how much to charge for each lawn, do you have any recommendations on a estimated charge?

Timing is everything. Sometimes you can do all the right things, but at the wrong time. Now.. Pass out flyers, post CL ads, door hangers, pass out business cards ... In the springtime.. Then you'll get swamped with new work.
