Forgot to mention. This became really convenient for us. I built a 3/4" thk X 24" W X 4' long X 24" tall oak box to hold 14 bags of pellets. It sits right next to the stove. I use a large grain scoop to fill the stove. Has a piano hinge lid same 3/4 in oak. Casters on the bottom.

We have a Harman P43 no auto ignite. We burn 2-3+ tons a year. We run it 24/7 when temps drop below mid 30s solo source of heat for about 1400 sq/ft. Never set it above a 3 (about half) Hardwood pellets (8100BTU/lb). Thorough clean at the beginning of the season then a good cleaning of the inside of the stove every ton (full ash can) there after.

I use a Pleasant Hearth PH50CABPS model (50k BTU). Our living space is 2 floors (7 rooms), plus basement and attic. Our living space is approximately 1,600 sq ft. We run our stove on AUTO, around halfway (thats our max normally). We use Barefoot Pellets, they are our go to pellets. I open our trim (combustion air) around 3/4. Sometimes a little less. We DO NOT have our air intake coming from outside. I clean my firepot usuallt every other day, clean fire box maybe 2x a week (only takes 10 minutes). I do a complete cleaning approximately every 3-4 weeks (remove baffles, etc). I know harman is different to clean. Also, depending on lot# or batch of pellets, more air trim is required, +/- a little. If your glass is getting black soot build up, you need more air intake (combustion), gray/ white ash is ok air. Last year we used just a little under 2 ton, kept living area comfortable....shorts, shortsleeves. Our basement is kept warm with an Alaskan Stoker Stove 2, on low setting. We use around a 1 1/2 ton a winter of rice coal. Our total heating bill for basement and living area was around $800. (250 per ton of pellets x 2=500, $300 for a little over 1 1/2 ton of coal.)

I have a PF100 pellet furnace. I burn Hammers Hot Ones. I keep my feeder at 4 to 4 1/2. I set my position to manual after the furnace lights and it will feed a small amount of pellets to keep fire going regardless of the thermostat setting so your igniter doesn’t have to keep starting over and over. I return to auto to shut it down completely for cleaning and to restart it. I burn about 5 tons a season for a 3000sg ft house.

I tried burning corn in my P68, and I also could smell smoke and the corn seemed to be much harder on my stove. It was much dirtier than a good brand of pellets. I ended up blowing a fuse. I sold all the corn on craigslist, and all I burn now is pellets. like I said in my video to help the cost I just use my heat pump when it is not real cold and they do not seem to make my electric go up much. I linked a good DIY heat pump in the description of my video. Hope you heating season is warm and toasty. God bless

Stumbled onto your channel while looking for prices of pellets and info on Harman stoves. Nice video, regular guy, talking to me, not at me. Informative. We are going to be replacing a 14 year old Englander, that's served us well. Our house is about 1600-1800sq ft, 2 story cape design, full unheated cellar in Maine. The cellar stays 45 degrees or higher, main heating system is direct vent on demand baseboard heat, 2 zones, and with the pellet stove used as primary heat source, the propane unit only gets used on the coldest nights. Zero to -20. Pellets we purchase with our grocery trips, buy as we need, 3-4 tons/year. Settings, range from 1/low to 10/high for both feed and fan. It's always started on 5, and left there until the living room achieves72-74 degrees than lowered to setting of one to maintain 72-74. That varies on actual outside temp. We read all the comments and seems the P43 would be a very good replacement. Pricey, yeah, and more research is forth coming. One question I have, burning pellets is going to emit soot. Especially direct vented. I'm retired, and would rather be fishing than power washing my siding every Spring. Would a chimney pipe outside up passed the eves help? I'm subbing for now and headed toward your play list on this subject. Thanks in advance for your time Jim.

I vent my Harman out the side of my house. I have never had and issues with it making a mess of my siding. You will see how my stove is vented in some of my videos. Also it makes cleaning the exhaust a lot easier at the end of the season. I blow the exhaust out maybe once or twice during the season with my shop vac. Thanks for subscribing

Hey DIYJim, Just stumbled onto your video. We have a 1600 sq ft rancher here in Canada. Been running a Hartman Pellet Pro II for about 20 years. Yes, it still runs.55,000 btu. Do all my own maintainence on it tho some parts are extinct.( circuit board). Uses a thermocouple for esp probe at $240 replacement cost instead of thermistor in later models. Burn SPF pellets at $295 CDN/ton. 4 ton a season(180-200 days 24 hr/day). Clean out ash tray every month. Vacuum above heat exchanger every 90 days. Use stove temp mode only at about 3-4. Higher when temps get down to -30 Celsius. Had an Envirofire pellet stove when we bought this house but was pathetic for heat settled on Harman. Great workhorse product. Chimney is vented 12 feet through roof. 3 inch pipe.

Been using a Harman P61A for 5 yrs now. Complete clean once/year-I rip it down and vac everything and blow with air to get all the crap out of the back and everywhere. lube everything that needs it...Twice/yr moderate clean while using. Burn Green Supreme. I've not really noticed much difference in pellets of the level I use. Softwood and mix mainly. One things for certain Harman above all other stoves will burn everything equally well including drywall screws. LOL In NH it can get really cold-20 below sometimes with the wind chill factor. Mainly, avg., over three mos 15-20F. I heat laterally. Don't have a basement. Dbl wide with two additions-2000 sq.ft. Sit at end of house in living room. If I had a basement I'd likely burn 2 ton. Heating floors is most efficient. Stove in the middle of the basement with a fan is ideal. Also have a 31 yr old Trane 93% eff propane furnace forced hot air. It hardly runs that's why shes lasted so long. Hoping for 40 yrs. Tested last year still at 93% efficiency. I use a 18" floor pedestal fan blowing on the side & over the top of the pellet stove and get more heat than just the distribution fan. It works great. I run the house about the same as you 72-73 F. I run the feed at 2.5 and temp at 73 auto. When it's really cold the furnace kicks on. I burn about 4-4.5 ton @$229/ton this year. My compliments on your videos on the Harman. Nothing beats a Harman in my opinion. Thanks

I use Somerset Hardwood pellets, they stand out high above all of the 4-5 other brands I have tested. They are likely regional as they come from Somerset Ky. as a by product of a hardwood floor manufacturer. I have seen as much as 125 degrees higher hot air temp coming out the front of the stove from one brand to another. The somersets burn very hot and clean, dump my bucket at about one ton and not even near full, do a quick clean at that time. Deep clean as you do. P-68 here too, run my settings similar as you do. Mine is also likely too big and a P43 could do but what the heck, I do like a bit of over kill. Mine has been trouble free since 2011

We just purchased a 1993 2,054 sq. ft. 3-level home in the Halifax area, Nova Scotia. Vinyl windows were installed 10 years ago and a new roof and additional insulation in 2017. It came with a Harman PP38+/PP43 in the basement. Both these numbers are on the label at the back of the stove; not sure which it is. We've never used a pellet stove before and have no idea how many tons of pellets we'll burn this first season. (The idea of "tons" of pellets is a bit scary, frankly!) Around here, pellets are all softwood, mostly from Quebec, easily obtained at any home warehouse or builder's supply. Since I don't know how many pellets we'll be burning, can't speak to how many cleanings. We had the stove serviced by an independent service tech. He said to keep the feed rate at 3 or above. Thanks for your videos -- a big help to us!

Sadly after I bought the Absolute43, I learned on a forum; that the P43 has a lower feed rate. The Absolute 43 replaced an Austraflamm Integra II which had a minimum 1.1 lbs/hour feed rate. The Absolute43 has a minimum feed rate of 1.3 lbs/hour. The P43 has an optional hopper extension as we miss a large hopper. Thank you for telling us about your feed rate. I prefer pellets made by Fiber By-Products, Corp in White Pigeon MI; over Marth pellets.

P43 here since 2012, heat about 1000 sqft. Apartment type of living quarters built in a 40 by 60 garage, use 3 to 4 ton a year. Runs off off a Skytech 3301 remote thermostat, usually set at 73 and down to maybe 68 in the night time. My favorite pellet is Hamers Hot Ones, It is easier for me to get APW Appalachian Wood. Brown/Orangeish bag. I set mine at High on room temp, it seems to control the distribution fan speed. Feed is 3 to 4 as you. Mine is usually set to manual as it runs 24 hrs a day, just picks up when the stat wants heat.

@@DIYJIM I thought I replied to this but I don't see it so will do it again. Here is a link to the one I put on, right after I bought the stove in 2012. I just unplugged one of the thermistor wires and plugged the receiver in between, this way you can turn the receiver off and still use the factory thermistor. Now you can put the remote anywhere you would like the temp to sensored from. Bad part is that the batteries will go bad in the receiver in the middle of the night at 3am when you wake up and it is 83° and the stove is blazing away. I usually put new ones in at the beginning of the season. The stove just keeps a maintenance burn through the winter but as it gets warmer I will set it to Auto so it cycles on and off. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FS3IGK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've burnt my xxv since 2006 and p68 since 07. The only thing I do different from you is once the temp outdoor stays around 35 and colder I turn on manual so the stove doesn't cool off and adds life to ignitor and saves electricity. I live in NH burn maine wood pellets and 4-5 ton a year. I burn xxv 90% of the time it gets cleaned weekly and the p68 gets cleaned once a ton and if I know it's going to be below zero I scrape heat exchanger the day before to reap benefits of all the heat.

To answer your questions about our stove.lol 1- 1,200 sq ft and built in 1959 (found out during install our walls have no insulation.lol) 2- Harmon P43 and I'm assuming about 43000 btus 3-we just had it installed Jan 9th but we did buy 2 tons cause we don't know yet 4- so far we used 10 bags of pellets from tractor supply (seemed really good) and have 2 tons from lowes called power pellets...honestly to me they suck (I'll explain why down lower cause I got a question too haha) 5- since it's our first ever pellet stove we scrape the burn pot daily and every other day vacuum the ashes. once a week we do a quick clean using a paint brush to get ashes off the walls and clean the glass. haven't yet had to do a deep deep clean. 6- we have it set on feed rate 4, max fan and set the temp between 70 and 75. now why the lowes sucks, it seems like they have way more ash than tractor supply and made the stove act weird (I'll explain the weird). about a day after starting the lowes pellets the stove randomly shut off with 6 blinking lights and a lot of unburned pellets in the ash bin and burn pot. we cleaned it all good then worked fine, another few days pass and even more unburned pellets were in the ash bin and the burn box was overflowing with unburned pellets. we didn't have that issue with the tractor supply ones. my question though is do you think we are doing something wrong and causing the issue? or could it actually be the pellets we are using?

I keep my P68 on auto during fall and spring and on manual during the cold of winter. That way the fire never goes out completely during the coldest part of winter and it saves on the igniter when it’s not on auto. My feed rate is generally about 4. And I’ll adjust the temperature down some when I leave for work. The dogs are fine with the house at 60 degrees. Then when I get home 12-14 hours later I’ll crank the heat up and in no time that P68 has the place toasty.

I've adjusted mine down to 1 and watched for a while, and up to 6 and watched for a while, and really did not see that much of a difference. I started counting seconds in between the feed auger moving, and it did seem like it fed more often on the higher setting, but I didn't see a real difference in the distance thing like you and others talk about. Some say keep it 1 inch ash before end of burn pot. But I haven't heard anyone talk more in depth about why they have it on a certain setting. Thanks

The adjustment on room temp is fan speed, mine even has a little fan marking on it. Has zip to do with maintaining room temp but when set at high would cause it to cycle more simply because the fan makes it cool off faster. Frankly I would think setting on high could make it more efficient but that may be BS on my part but I imagine it could get more heat into the room and less up the stack as the fire dwindles.

Not sure have you tried calling a shop that sells Harman or go on Facebook and ask that question on the Harman pellet stove page.

I’m considering moving to a pellet stove, replacing my current wood stove. My wood stove sits in the living room which is also the tv room. I’m concerned about the fan noise interfering with the sound coming from the tv. Any thoughts from your viewers or you on that concern? Thanks.

I don’t think I would like to here it all the time. Sorry probably not the answer you wanted. Maybe it would not be as bad with the fan on low. Ask that question on the Harman facebook group. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video.

I have A p68. Cape cod built in 96... Basement is 24 x36. I certainly can't keep my house as warm as you folks on here. Not sure why. House isn't wrapped... Might be the problem. I have found if run my quadrafire in my living room on low and the 68 on low on auto .... I use 4-5 ton in a ave to cold winter. Vs running the 68 all by itself in the basement on med to high temps..... Uses same amount of fuel but we notice the house is more pleasant with both. I bought the p68 thinking it could heat my entire house... But really couldn't keep it comfortable.

Sorry to hear that thanks for commenting. You ever try moving the cold air down or the hot air up with a fan?
@Dooguy
@Dooguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@DIYJIM Yes from the get go I cut a large hole in the ceiling right above the P68 and constructed a manifold that slides onto the front of the stove to shuttle hot air up to the second floor like a forced air vent situation. It works ok but running both stoves seems to be the best all around set up for us. Im contemplating removing our vinly siding and wrapping the house...two stories are tough if it was a ranch i would tackle it myself. Not sure if it not being wrapped would make the difference vs the cost of it all. Love the videos and your channel. Great work. Are you by chance a veteran.

Yeah I was heating my home from the basement also with a Quadra Fire 1200 and had to run on med or high during the winter. I used between 6 - 7 tons. now have a mini split system and use around 3 tons and the basement and upper level stay around 73 degrees 😎

Where you live has a lot to do with how many tons of pellets you will use. You’ll probably burn a little more if you live in North Dakota than if you live in Illinois.

How much do you pay for a ton of pellets or a 40 pound bag or what do you think your cost is for the year

I think I paid around $240 a ton but I think the price has went up since then. I bought about 6 months ago because I was afraid of the price going up.

i use a Harmon P 43 i have 1100 sq ft. this stove has a direct vent like a dryer vent horizontal.I too replaced igniter after 6 years only because i felt it was time it was not broken . this stove will heat easy 1500 sq ft, my auger speed is set at 4, i clean it 2x a year. I use 100 40 lb bags. I use Greene team premium pellets less ash! now i vacuum inside often only because i am anal and like a clean stove ! its called preventive maintenance! i clean burn pot daily so the pellets glide easier in the burn pot. i keep the temp setting at 74 my probe works up to 15 feet away and 5' height. i will NOT walk around my home in the winter ( north east ) njin sweatshirt! so i like it toasty in here.

@@DIYJIM yup i go through roughly 2 ton = 100 bags. I find leaving the stove at a desired temperature setting instead of off + on all the time will burn less pellets. Cleaning the heat exchanger on top also helps! Weekly

Will one 40 lbs bag last 24hr the way you burn it, slow constant burn? I wish I could burn my stove slower. Sometimes I think could have bought a smaller one.
@Rob-hv9kt
@Rob-hv9kt 2 жыл бұрын
@@DIYJIM i’ve been reading your post I think the issue you’re having is that you should of bought the P 43. I read that correctly your square footage is less than 1200. Slow consistent burn with the P 43 at 1100 square-foot no matter how cold it is .I will use maybe 3/4 of a bag to 1 full bag in 24 hrs. Unless it’s extremely cold like 12° than you know I could go a little over a bag. The harmon stoves are top-of-the-line like you the only thing I replaced was the igniter and I really didn’t need to do that. Keeping the room temperature consistent is key to burning fewer pellets. Also with a bigger stove vs sq. Footage you’re using more pellets then needed to be.
