How I Shoot Top Down Overhead for Piano Videos

Here's how I record my overhead top-down videos for my piano lessons which can be useful for piano teachers where they want to record lessons for their students.

Thanks Tim! I had been using a standard tripod with a smart phone adapter which just broke (!) so I am looking to upgrade my set up, I think this would work much better to help enhance the perspective of the keyboard when teaching my students on Zoom. Great advice, as always!

Thanks for this. I’m a kirtanist / harmonium player and putting together an online chanting and harmonium course. The front videos are easy but the above ones are SOOO challenging! I ended up using a joby tripod stand for my phone, wrapped around a mic stand behind me. Need to trim the videos a bit, but works ok!

Tim, Wondering how you set up your overhead mic, something similar to the iKlip? And do you have any recommendations for a mic under $150? I play on a Yamaha upright piano in my basement that is a large, open space. Thanks for your time

Hi Tim, great video! I’m wondering if you know a way to record overhead, but live for Skype lessons for a student I have. Ideally, I’d love to have two screens going on at once: one so the student can see my face, and another where they can see my overhead view. Thanks!

@@PianoRyanYT I do Skype lessons with students and have two views. I've opened two accounts with Skype so one account is my Mac and the other account is my iPhone which gives them the overhead view

Depends what you sit it on. The higher the better if sitting on the floor.

The screw can't be tight enough to hold the iphone holder when i try to put it on the boom stand so it just wobbles, what do i do? Is there another iphone holder that you can recommend?

Gaffer tape? New mic stand? I know what you mean... don't extend the boom so far out?

The keyboard is the same height so not sure what you mean except you'll need a mic boom stand over your head from behind you.

@@topmusicco Ok thanks I don't have space behind me as there is a wall in the way however I've found a a good gooseneck clip for the iPhone which I can put on the lid if it's fully open and this does work but I can't get it to cover the whole piano view.

I just got this per you recommendation and the screw on the piece to hold the iPhone doesn’t tighten enough on the end of the bar so it wobbles

I got the boom stand,..but couldnt get the phone holder. Its not available here in India. Could someone pls suggest me with some other alternative phone holder which is compatable with the boom stand?

What happens when someone calls you or you get phone notifications? Doesn't it interfere with the video?

Oh no. That is a shame. But they really are good. I’ve been using mine for 10 years and still as good and tight as when I bought them.

@@topmusicco Yeah I guess it's in the same price bracket as any pro photo equipment. So I bought a €6 one instead cause the Iklip is good but not 11 times better.

Yes... but not much! You could put something together with lamps and gaffer tap, but it won't be very sturdy.

hey @Boccia waterproofing, run the mic through your laptop & program of choice. It's plug & play if you're using USB which we do usually. The program handles the mix. You can get more complicated with an AV setup but this is fine for starters.
