Would you buy a fixer-upper?
@melaniebishop6005

No. But I'm 66 and I might of when I was younger. And I never want to move again. I would never buy a smoked in home. Once we helped on older lady paint her livingroom and she had smoked constantly. We washed the walls and brown water ran down the walls. It was so nasty!

We have purchased 3 fixer uppers, the youngest of which was 112 years old. We are in the first new build we have ever had and we miss the nooks and crannies of our old homes.

Most Definitely have!! Built in 1892, 2-story brick farmhouse, completely original. I gutted 85% of it by myself. I wired and plumbed the entire house myself. I sanded all the hardwood floors with a little help from grandmas and stained them with a little help from my oldest 2 kids. I built all my kitchen cabinets and properly bricked halfway up 2 of the windows to allow for more counter space. It's been a long road and some days I seriously consider setting it on fire 😆 but I absolutely love it and it's my forever home💕

Hi Natalee We agree 100*/* with all your advice. We have moved several times. And the last home sold in 24 hours with 5 offers. It was clean and neat. A declutter is effective . It helps them see their things in your home! Great advice

It also depends on what time of the year you are putting up your house for sale. I noticed you put this video up 5 months ago so you probably sold the house in March or April which in many areas is the best time of the year to sell since there are many buyers looking to buy and not many sellers to compete with since many sellers wait until May to put their houses for sale.

It can definitely be a bit more challenging. We sold in February in the state of Maine where the weather is terrible. Proof it is possible to sell top dollar any time of year. ☺️

I remember in 1984 touring a model home community where you could choose appliance colors and they had that grey, and also a pale chocolate ice cream color. Like a mocha shade. That was the only time in 30+ years I've seen those colors.

I have a Samsung, grey front-loading washer and dryer. They are 5 years old. I am truly not really fond of the washer, but my husband bought these as a surprise for me when we were moving into a new home. Regarding the grey color: the cycle indicators are printed in red and are hard to read, so I keep a small flashlight on top of the washer.

One thing about decor these days...places for sale can use online room settings without moving furniture around, etc. (There is a charge for this). Not everyone is a devotee of certain decor styles. And there are those who like to see a "blank canvas" room.

Every house we have ever bought was a fixer upper. We went to look at one house and I immediately said no...my husband said Hon, think of what we can do..We did buy that house and redid just about everything...plus it was on an acre. ..i'm blessed my husband is a Engineer/carpenter. he is also a jack of all trades. Being married to him has taught me everything about how to do anything. I know how to roof a house now, side a house, tear down a garage, build a garage, build walls, take out walls, painting, building, everything. The only thing we didn't do ourselves was carpet (that was in the 80's), now we have all wood floors. We ended up making $32,000 more dollars than what we paid for it....the most on the street. everyone told us because our property looked so good and we became friends, they hated to see us go, when we moved. Next house we did everything there also. our last house we bought done. Then I started painting, changing rooms, etc....It's in my blood.

It’s so funny… Every time we make over a house we say that’s the last time and then we always do it again anyway. It’s in my blood too! And it’s fun when you get a huge payday at the end…😃 💵

Hi Natalie. I love Tip number one, we did buy the ugliest house in our neighborhood and now it’s the most beautiful house in the neighborhood we have tripled the value of our house. Which kind of beat me in the rear because I mean to stay in this house. Our taxes have also tripled😬

+Alandra Hubbard Great question! We had to rip out all of the carpeting and prime and paint every square inch of the property. We put in brand new carpet and brand new flooring everywhere, but it worked! There was zero smoke smell when we were done.

We bought an ozone item online ( perhaps Amazon) it takes away all kinds of smells. Plug it in, run it 2 - 12 hours & it’s amazing. You have to be out of the home during the process. We bought a home the previous owners smoked in. Paint & new carpet didn’t totally take away the smell. Sometimes it will.

I love your designing. My secret dream career if I had time from my Nursing career during my working years. Now I am retired and have time to create and I'm loving it! I also reside in Central Florida, Altamonte. I am rehabbing a 70s condo. The values have soared since I purchased in 2016. I am very torn as if I sale I cannot get a home in my area without a mortgage but I hate Association fees! Do you have a home tour video? I will look around for it.

You are looking for a diamond in the rough because that's where the opportunity lies. My favorite is actually trying to find a late 1980s or 1990s home in a good area that hasn't really been updated because you can get away with more cosmetic upgrades. For example, our home in Maine was extremely beautiful and had so much potential but the whole exterior had been painted a butter yellow with orange doors and was hidden by tons of bushes and trees. Hopefully you will get to see some of what we did with it in a couple of weeks. But we put about $10-15k into it and A LOT of sweat equity, and it is now worth about $100,000 more than what we paid for it. Hope that helps.
