I love my LCD-X 2021. Very impressive headphones. I can use them without any software correction, but with Acustica Audio Sienna I feel like I'm in a nice studio with really good speakers. Another scenario that makes me love headphones more than loudspeakers is not mentioned in the video - when the war in Ukraine started (I'm from Ukraine) I had to dismantle my beautiful studio because there was a good chance that invaders would loot it and it was impossible for me to take many things with me to a shelter except a pair of headphones and a laptop. Here I am, more than a year after this story began, and I'm really glad I have a great pair of Audeze because without my studio they're a blessing.

Thank you for the information. 1) you have a very good simple understandable English speech. As a foreigner, it's easy for me to understand aloud what you're talking about. 2) you successfully described my feelings about headphones. I couldn't logically explain it to myself, but it's really better to bring them together when a room in the house is not prepared, when there are standing waves and other troubles in it

Indeed the LCD-X is specifically designed to be highly efficient and doesn't take much power at all to get very loud. Glad you are enjoying that. There is a new successor to the Mobius called the Maxwell that I'm looking forward to trying soon myself too

I like your quote - “Mixing on a great sounding pair of headphones is way better then mixing in a shitty sounding room”. I agree with you 100%. I moved from my home to an apartment and I can’t get my studio to sound right. It was sounding perfect in my home and translated well to other speaker systems when testing. I find my self using the headphone more than the studio monitors, I switch back an forth but, mostly use the headphone. I did my last 15 releases using mostly headphones - cheers!👍👍👍

Nice! I went with the MM-500s because I mostly mix on Barefoots in my room, and I find the voicing on the MM-500s to be fairly similar (though not identical) to the Barefoots running flat out, so it’s easy for me to transition between them. Love Audezes!

Hi Kohle! Prima Video, danke Dir! Just a little comment from my side: I often use a DT990 Pro, and one of the things I like about them is the sound stage. However, it is a different one than the sound stage from my monitors. It feels like my brain takes a moment to adjust before the curtain goes up and the stage reveals itself. But hey, now I'm def going to try the LCD-X !!

Thank you soo much for this video. I constantly get into arguments with people who like to follow the tradition of typical "studio" headphones and hate/avoid "hifi"/"audiophile" headphones, without even trying them once. This is such a valiable lesson about trying out different equipment rather than blindly making an opinion :)

I really started getting serious about mixing a year ago, (I’m not doing it professionally yet) but I have been exclusively mixing on headphones using Sony MDR 7506’s. I watched a video with Andrew Scheps and that was what he was using. So I thought why not and right now they are very affordable. I think like you said once you figure out what works you are good to go. I do want to try the Audeze’s so I will save some money and buy some. I don’t have a space to set up a good room so headphones make my life better.

Great video, thanks! I have the Sennheiser HD650 too, with Sonarworks they sound great (with a better detailed bass range), but if I mix only with those headphones my mixes don’t translate well. I still don’t get the right overall amount of reverb/delays (too much), also, when I listen to the mix back on speakers, it sounds boxy, so I don’t have a good mid range representation on headphones . The HD650 tend to make anything sound good, so it’s more difficult to pinpoint mix problems. Nowadays, I’m mixing mainly on speakers, and I use the headphones for editing vocals and instruments and for checking some details as you mentioned, and finally I listen to the final mix both on speakers and headphones, and make some adjustments in order to make the mix sound good on both. I would love to hear what you think about the Slate VSX, if you’ll give it a try.

Nowadays I often start my mixing with headphones(beyerdynamic DT990PRO) and finish them in my studio on the Kali LP6.

It seems that no matter what headphones you buy u need to get used to them, so some can make good results with dt770 and some make bad mixes with audeze

I mix on ATHm40x. Gets me really really reliable results. I know that if I can make it sound good in these cans it'll come out good on commercial systems. But the thing I wish most is that I wish I could hear the vocals outside of my head. Soundstage man.

For me the Sonarworks reference app helps a lot and you could own a cheap-ish pair of headphones and it will improve the sound quite a bit. For me thats the game changer since it's a cheaper alternative to buying really expensive headphones.

I'm happy with my AKG K701. I use a plugin called DearVR MIX on my monitoring chain. It has an option, which compensates for the non-linearities of different headphones. I absolutely love how it sounds. Since it's virtual technology, there is also the possibility to check the mix in a kitchen or car environment.

you might check out the austrian audio hi-x 60 as well. they are the kind of real successor. i have the hi-x55 which have the same strong driver but with a closed back. i needed a very good headphone for DJing. and this one did the trick. when you use the headphone in a louder environment, you turn the volume higher as well. and this is where the difference to other headphones is. other headphones get closer to the maximum excursion of the driver, especially with louder bass. this area is not that linear anymore and the mid and high frequencies then compress and begin to distort. the austrian audio have a higher excursion way that is still linear. that is really great for higher volume and loud deep base without distorting the midrange or high frequencies. therefore listening fatigue is less. i have the k702 from akg and loved it, but they where always thin in the bass. the AA HI-X55 have more power in the bass area without sounding unnatural boomy by adding an artificial resonance. i did not try the HI-X 60 so far but i am pretty sure that they can deliver an even more detailed soundstage because of their open back nature.

I have both the LCD-X (2021) and the MM-500. For distorted guitars the MM-500 gets fatiguing after a while for me, there is too much energy around 3KHz. So I prefer the LCD-X for metal. Having more than 25 pairs of headphones I still prefer to use my Focal Clear Pro (original, not the new MG version which I also own) for mixing. They translate the best for me. I have way more expensive headphones but the Focal Clear just makes the cut. I also find them really comfortable for long sessions which is very important too. Something I can't say about the MM-500, too much clamp force. I have the SPL Phonitor 2 headphone amp which has the crossfeed matrix, but I seldom use that function. I'm more used to how music sounds on headphones without crossfeed. I mix 95% on headphones and just make some checks on different speakers now and then. I have a way too small room for speakers and have a null at 70Hz at my mixing position so headphones are the way for me. My real problem now is that I have too many headphones. Hey, I'm sick. I need help :D

Hi, please could you tell me how would you compare HD600 with Focal Clear Pro? Tonal balance, translation, transient response? I mix on HD600 more than 10 years, and I am looking for something next, but with honest translation, midrange etc. I thought that MM500 would be the best, but you stopped me with your review. @@gorantovic1473 I don't have the HD600, but I do have the HD6XX and HD660S. What the whole Sennheiser series lacks is good bass extension (haven't heard the new HD660S2). Focals are better there, but I would say that both LCD-X and MM-500 are even slightly better, being planar. Comparing HD6XX vs Clear Original: The HD6XX are more laid back. In a straight comparison I would even say that they feel a little bit muddy. Clear has more energy in high mids and treble, which sometimes can feel harsh on some songs. Clears have more resolution and it's easier to pick up details. But it's not like night and day. I would also think that the HD600 sounds closer to the Clear. The HD6XX/650 are supposed to be a more laid back version of the HD600, with a little more bass and less treble. The Clear have a little bigger soundstage than the HD6XX, but for an open back it's still somewhat small. But for mixing I think a smaller soundstage is preferable. That said I really like my HD6XX, they are really comfortable and sound good. If things sounds off/bad on them I know there is something wrong with the mix. Great value for the money and replacement parts are easy to get hold of if one should need so. There's a reason why the HD600/650 are classics. The same thing can't be said about the Clears though. A pair of replacement pads go for crazy money, 150-200 Euros! That's one reason why I chose the Pro version. The sound signature is the same as the none pro version. But with the Pro version you get a extra pair of pads (with the none pro you get a balanced cable instead). Now days I think it's hard to get hold of the original Clear Pro (none MG version), but the none Pro has gone down in price since the launch of the Clear MG version. If I just want to listen to music I´ll choose the LCD-X over Clear, MM-500 and HD6XX. They are engaging and music comes alive. With all that said you should try both the MM-500 and the Clear before you make your decision. We all hear things differently.

@@user-us6qf3tv4y I don't have the LCD-2, but the LCD-X. Many of my headphones are cheaper than those, there's a spread from lets say 100€ to 5000€ among them. But I usually try to buy stuff when there's a discount. Also, I don't have kids. The best way to save money for stupid toys for yourself :D

@@user-us6qf3tv4y Already have a great DAC in the RME ADI-2/4 Pro SE 😉 But talking a bit seriously; having too many headphones becomes an issue when you want to mix on them. It would be much better if I would stick to one good pair and listen to music always through them. That way I would be much much more familiar with what sounds "right" when mixing. But headphones are a hobby for me, and they don't take as much space as instruments. Can't buy anymore instruments 🤣

@@salut9658 I think the DT 1990 has a bit wonky frequency response. I did a mix with them a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly I didn't like how my mix translated to other systems. But I'm sure one could get great mixes with them with more time and practice. I still have them in my collection and I liked to listen to music with them back in the days. But now they don't get much of my time.

I use the AKG K371 because they are veeeeery closely tuned to the Harman Over-Ear headphone target curve. Which is a very good reference. I also use Soundworks SoundID for headphones with it.

I've been mixing on headphones for several years. I am now the proud owner of a set of Audeze LCD-X (2021). I also recently bought a subwoofer. I have not yet integrated these 2 pieces into a mix. HOW DO I GUAGE THE PROPER AMOUNT OF BASS? WHICH DO I LISTEN TO? I am lost on how to proceed. Please help me (if you can, I'm feelin' down....)

I use a pair of austrian era AKG 702s, and a Superlux 330 pro 150 ohms for alternative perspective but it was a pair of very neutral campfire audio in ears (Orion) to dial in the mids and highs after Im happy with what ive done with the AKG's. I still use my monitors for emotional listening but use the AKG with flattening software to get things in the general ballpark and the campfires give me the immense and non hyped detail to sort things super fast... like 45 min tops with in ears but that's all it takes. Lust after some of those Audeze's.

Hell yeah! I've been a headphone mixer for years as well, I do have the NS10s and nice Eve Audio monitors to check everything on, but I can't be in the studio all the time so it works well for me. I'm hoping to move to Audeze soon - as we talked about whilst you were in England!

I started mixing on Yamaha hs 80m, but then I decided that I needed a mobile studio, I bought Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO and the realphones plugin, the main advantage is the ability to take the studio with you anywhere and not disturb anyone, it 's just very convenient, you can work wherever you want. Once upon a time I had expensive amplifiers and drums and it was a pain in the ass, but now you can completely create music with only a computer, sooner or later we all accept new technologies because they make our lives easier🍻🍻🍻🍺🍺🍺

i'm using an Austrian Audio OC-818 which is a fantastic allround mic. But in this video I placed it way too far away. I'm not used to making videos in my live room, haha!

No, I haven't. Maybe because all AKG headphones I have ever used had a weird high end that I never got used to. That's why I have stayed away so far. But good to hear that. Noted!

I usually don’t chime in, but I have to full heartedly agree with this comment! Your video would be much better if you removed the seemingly random metal riff and attached video (and I know EXACTLY why you are doing it, but it is failing to deliver what you are trying to dish out). I hate to just complain, so let me offer up a potential solution: -First, create a LOT of quick riffs that can be used like this. One of the main problems with the use of this riff is the repetition. If you create a library of them and pull from them RANDOMLY (and that is KEY! If you just go down the list, you’ll end up using the first one ALL THE TIME.) -Make sure that these breaks have a very definitive purpose with their placement and make the video you use representative of said use. So, in this video, I would create one of these breaks every time you talk about a specific headphone. Have a 1s video with a riff play that SHOWS the headphones you are introducing along with their name and price. This way, it is not repetitive AND it has viable content that the viewer actually wants to see, all while giving you that break you are trying to deliver! Since you are effectively using a new riff each time it just creates a vibe rather than creating a singular sound that repeats every single time. -You can probably have the graphics zoom in or do some other fancy foot work, but have it resolve into something that you can display along side the portion of the video where you are discussing that hardware (in this case; in other cases it could just be some point you want to drive home-I.e., my suggested modifications would be able to be used for every video you produce!). -I’m sure I could pull more rabbits out of this hat, but that trick never works, Bullwinkle!!! (Sorry, based upon your accent and likely age, the probability of that reference landing is pretty low, and even if you look it up, it will completely take away from the fun! LOL) Point being, I think you get my point and I dont need to elaborate more for you to understand and extrapolate into whatever you feel is important and relevant to your use case.

as someone who watches Dankpods, them audeze headphones are pretty nice I want to experiment with Planar magnetics but i cant really afford a set of the audeze (plus I think I'd rather look at the Meze audio ones). Though Drop apparently has a number of budget planar sets that also are in Sonarworks to balance them out (maybe the Hifiman planar magnetics could make for a cool video 🤔 as for headhones i use, i go between the Samson SR850's and the Audio Technica M50x's. I also have a pair of Presonus Eris BT headphones that have an aux in option, maybe i should try those out since they sound good.

As someone who's battled for years with not having ideal rooms/treatment, etc, spending way too much on treatment and Sonarworks, endlessly measuring calibrations...it was such a headache. Bought a pair of used LCD-X (2021) after selling some extra sets of cheaper cans and some of my acoustic treatment. Now I can work wherever I want to, and I've been really pleased with the results. Of course I wasn't working in an ideal room so it was a great option.

I have just moved from the srh 940 from shure (closed back) to dt 900pro X (open-back). I am worried to make this jump ! The shure was so flat beside a bit of lack of bass (it brokes I did not want to change). So I looked for open back headphones to see how it is different, but beside being open back, the frequency response is so different (far less bright that the shure I was used to). I always use sonarworx with that, and I think it is even more mandatory for the dt with this hole in the midrange. Hopefully my mixes will increase... or not. Audeze price is just out of my range

I am a combo guy myself...I will mix 90-95% in my KRK Rokit 7 Gen 3. I use the phone app to calibrate the angle. Once I have the mix where I start to like it, I will check the mix against my Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO cans...the trick here is that you make sure to purchase your headphones from a source/retailer/manufacturer that has more than one impedance available. The set I currently own are 80 ohm. If you want to get the most out of your system (and it has the power to do so), choose a model with 600 Ω Impedance. I don't use headphone amplifiers in my studio, so I went for the 80 instead of the 250. I would love to check those out. Putting them on the to-do list.. 18 Ω 32 Ω Smartphone, tablet, MP3 player, laptop 80 Ω Several studio uses, laptop, PC, Hi-Res-MP3 player 250 Ω Headphone amplifiers, stereo systems, audio interfaces, studio are 600 Ω High-end headphone amplifiers PROST!

I've been forced to mix on phones for years. I find I still need to do a final check on real speakers but in general, if you know what you're doing, you can get decent mixes on cans. Last album I mixed was on the Audeze Lcd-x's.. No ear fatigue and a necessity since I had to move my console to my house with less than desirable acoustics. Only minor thing I noticed is that I was mixing a little bass heavy..But i made adjustments and the clients were very happy.

Cool to see you so pleased with LCD X 2021s. I’m an electronic musician and addicted music lover. Mixing and creating music on the X is perfect for me. I need the full low end complemented with the other frequencies and the X gives me that. Can easily tell if something is off. If you like iems, the Symphonium Meteors are the iem little brother of the X 2021s. At about half the price these little guys have a big sound. they might even let you leave the big cans at home when traveling.

tried HD650 ,NDH30, BEYERDYNAMIC DT1990 PRO out of the box the best was ndh30 but it cost twice the sennheiser and more than beyer . With sonarworks or rew eq they are all almost the same and i keeped the sennheiser because they felt great. So my question for you is made the comparison with eq adjustment and tell us what you think bye

I love my hd600’s. I also use SW and CanOpener. Great results. I was very curious about the nd30 hearing great things but they also need slight eq tweaking as do all. I’m curious about the soundstage nd30 compared to 600’s. I think as you say for the cost it’s not big enough to go that route. Been curious about VSX only for reference on different types

Thank you for this video 👍. It's not easy to find videos from people actually mixing on headphones. You said that you pushed the upper-mids to sound a little edgy on the LCD-2 but wouldn't it be the other way around if they tend to sound warmer up there?

The LCD2 have a dip in the upper mids so when you mix you might wanna compensate that.

hey Kristian! I am using the mm500's lately but after watching this video I kinda regret selling my LCD-X's ☺ Mine were not the 2021 version though so I don't know if they changed a lot? Do you use some crossfeed (Canopener or something) with yours and no EQ, right? Thank you!

Hey! I haven’t used the older ones. I sometimes use Sonarworks, but only below 20% which is a very gentle high mid boost. I also try to use my SPL headphone amp with crossfeed

Since I have the Focal Clear MG Pro, I never mixed with monitor again. Ok, I am a nomad so I don't have monitors anymore, but even if I would have them, these headphones are so detailed, no room treatment needed, just the best for me.

I've used Sennheiser's 560S headphones, they're cheap, but I've gotten a sound pretty close to the truth with them. But I've also had to use speakers, mostly to find the right balance...often related to the level of the vocals. Creating the overall sound has been successful with Sennheisers, I've also used the 650s as a reference. However, they are too mid-range. Maybe I need to get those Audeze LCD-X's...

Sennheiser HD-650 For midrange, Status Audio CB-1 for Bass. AKG K-240 alternative reference. My room is horrible, too small, wrong shape, concrete walls with foam insulation and OSB . Standing waves. I must rely on headphones and analyzers for tonal balance. Audeze frequency response graphs LD-2 concern me with the high frequency roll off.

I have both the LCD-X and the LCD 5 from Audeze. A few of Focal’s reference pairs with the beryllium drivers. And I use them all in combination with the Slate VSX headphones, which gives psychoacoustics to simulate rooms and environments. Honestly I think the Slate headphones are the best for mixing and the others are best for catching things I miss. (Like those mastering errors you mentioned)

I already have an LCD 5, which has a similar frequency response, but is a lot more resolving. I don’t see a need to pick up an MM-500 because of that. But I think it would be a great choice. I’d prefer something with more forward mids compared to the LCD X, but that’s just my preference. Another solid choice is the Focal Clear MG.

Hearing about these and the Slate VS-somethings have me tickled pink at the moment. Not only is my current living situation terrible for mixing on monitors, but I've been considering doing van living nomad thing, so a good headphone option would enable me to take a single guitar, audio interface, and laptop along with me to continue to make music that I wouldn't have to slap a LoFi tag in the description.

I went for the Audeze MM-500's. I prefer to eq them with the oratory eq. However, they are incredible well balanced out of the box. Audeze truly is next level.

A parametric eq. either the headphone eq in soundsource or equillibrium from dmg. Those two sound the best to me. @@thedarksoul2104

Also, the LCD-2 is still around 1200 bucks (not available on Thomann though). It's only the LCD-2 classic that is considerably cheaper as you mentioned.

I use the Neumann NDH 20 daily to mix. Love them. Before I click submit to distribute, I check on studio monitors, cheap headphones, and in my truck. My situation doesn't allow for volume in my house most of the time.

It is interesting to hear this ringing endorsement of Audeze headphones from a mixing engineer, as yes, they are marketed to hifi enthusiasts and not recording professionals. Most headphones seem like they are, really, with the exception of monitors like Audio Technica M50Xs and Sennheiser 280s, because that's what headphones in studios are usually used for. That being said, any headphone with a measurably flat frequency response I would mix on, and currently use Sennheiser 600s for that purpose. A tried and true neutral reference that's stood the test of time

Watch the end of the Video to hear my opinion on the MM500 vs the LCD-X. The good thing about Audeze is that all their headphones can be driven even by consumer amps. That doesn’t mean a good headphone amp isn’t gonna sound better.

Slate VSX. Maybe not the best for final edits but essential for checking your mix across various sound systems. You really could do the entire mix with these as well, they’re really incredible. Archon mids sound amazingly flat, best “room” in VSX…

Been using LCD-X but all I can trust with them is the low end. I switch back to Sennheiser HD-600 for everything else. Too whacked out in the 2-4K area. Used to EQ them but now I just use them as a reference. I wanted to be able to mix/master on headphones exclusively but so far, can’t do it. My big Dunlavys are not with me now so I’m using these inexpensive JBL 306-Ps plus 3 pairs of headphones.

Currently I’m using Sennheiser HD700, HD58X, HD 280 PRO & Apple earbuds (domestic standard mix check, the new NMS10‘s 😂😂😂), I’ve heard a rumour that there may be a „PRO“ version of the Sennheiser HD 660S‘s coming out sometime. With 96% of music being consumed on headphones (apparently….) the importance of mixes for headphones is way more important than before, for some clients I even do a special „binaural“ mix for them to release in conjunction with the standard stereo mix, have until not got into immersive mixing which in the end of the day would be mostly consumed in a folded down binaural mix or so, I’ve been a bit sceptical about trying mixing immersive on headphones only and an immersive monitor system is beyond any economic sense I feel, I don’t have a commercial customer base that would be able to pay for such, and as far as I understand it’s still a niche area even for the big boys. I think immersive is here to stay but for the standard music consumer stereo/binaural will be the majority of products, it would appear with plugin companies like Dear VR and Sound Particles (whose products I really like) are making plugins that you could mix immersively on headphones, but like I said, it’s a commercial question, an immersive mix is far more time consuming and therefore expensive compared to standard stereo, will the music producers and the consumers going to be prepared to pay the extra costs?

I found it weird that you liked the LCD 2s for mixing. Everyone eqs the highs like crazy! I loved them for listening to music though. Cool and fuzzy blankets. LCD-X is a reference’s reference!!!! I had the LCD XCs 2016 version and they were razors. That bass though!!!! Audeze rules! Have you tried ZMFs?

I gotta say the difference between the 2s and the Xs is way smaller than most people think. We've got a few pairs here so i have heard them side by side many times. We do have the older wooden LCD-2s which are slightly different from the current model.

Due to circumstances I’ve always mixed using headphones. The mix would sound fantastic on the headphones but would translate poorly to everything else, which was extremely frustrating. I then invested in a pair of LCDX headphones and the difference is unbelievable. My mixes now translate extremely well on other sound systems and headphones. Well worth the investment and a lot cheaper than acoustically treating a room and buying top end speakers.

You don't need room treatment(anymore than simply having furniture) if your speakers have good directivity. Best of all good speakers with good directivity are only becoming cheaper.

One thing that isn’t being covered is the headphone amp needed to accurately drive Audeze cans. He drops the SPL. Amp but people need to be aware of the amps being used.

I exclusively mix with headphones, not even super high end headphones tbh Everyone tells me i need something like sonarworks to give my headphones a flat frequency response buuut the headphones I use for mixing are also the headphones I use for casual everyday listening so I'm already intimately familiar with how "professional" mixes are supposed to sound in my cans Part of me worries that if I used software to make my headphones have a flatter response I'd start making weird mixing decisions trying to compensate for my headphones no longer responding the way I'm used to IDK if that's a dumb opinion but i kinda feel like you can do a great mix on just about any cans or speakers as long as you're very familiar with how they respond, if you mix on the same gear you use for everyday listening you'll almost subconsciously be treating everything you hear as a reference track

Currently I'm using Soundpeats A6 headphones and I gotta say they are great value for money, I've used everything from little JVC in ears to an Amazon Basics gaming headset and still been able to get decent mixes once I'm familiar with how they sound though Also it helps that I produce/mix everything from techno to death metal to hip hop so I have a really wide range of references to test my headphones frequency response in as many different directions as possible and become super familiar with how they behave Also they have a noise cancellation button which I regularly toggle on and off when mixing because they have a totally different frequency response curve, if my mix sounds good in both modes then it will sound good on pretty much anything

the best monitoring system is the one you know the best!.. its that simple. Even cheap headphones work if you know how they respond and you know how to make mixes translate using the sound the headphones produce!

I stopped mixing metal on speakers. I was just looking for balls, volume and power but the mixes never sounded good on any other system. I bought a pair of expensive Sennheiser headphones for my home studio which enabled me to work evenings, hear detail and dynamics and reference tracks in fair comparison. Finally my stuff started to sound like I wanted it too.

Inhave been using Beyerdynamik since i am 15...and i am old! Certainly i tried audezee as well (lcd 2 x and the cheaper closed ones) and while beeing impressive headphones, they are too heavy, to fragile and too bulky fir my taste PLUS i regularly made dimb decisions on them. Without sonarworks no headphones are linear enough (except the discontinued HD860) for me and i really tried many. These days i use DT1990 and recently did my first number one on them😊 Seems to work!

@@KohleAudioKult Yeah I believe the NDH 30’s were released last May or June. It took me a few days to get used to them because the are pretty neutral. I was so used to headphones being hyped in certain frequencies but the Neumann were perfect. It has a great sound stage as well.

@@KohleAudioKult I totally understand. I was looking at the LCD-2’s but they are close to $1,800. Too rich for my blood lol! The Neumann’s were $700 and while they are amazing I still enjoy monitoring through traditional speakers.
