I am so excited to hear that there is someone else out there who types up notes of what he or she has highlighted in the books they read! Thank you for validating me this way haha. I love typing up notes and quotes after I read a book. It helps me remember better, I enjoy it, and it's such a great reference for later!

I'm a Bible nerd too and appreciate you sharing some of your pro tips for studying the Bible. My process for Bible Study is very similar for getting the most out of Scripture by including personal reading, commentaries, typing up notes/thoughts, and how this practically applies to our lives. I have to look into the NT Wright commentaries you shared. Thank you, Tim, and have a great week!

Haha, i got really nervous at first when you were talking about reading the text and asking "what does this text mean to me?" That can be very dangerous and leaves the text to an unlimited interpretation. It's really learning about Hermanuetics and reading from what the authors intended to convey to the reader. So im glad you mentioned reading commentaries in your studies. I always read scripture asking the question, "what is God doing to save?" The scriptures are about Christ and not about us. Once i got that, man, it changed everything on how i read the bible. Whatever you do, and it's tempting to do but don't read yourself into the text. Show me the Law and show me the Gospel. Good topic on study. We'll never mine all the gold but it sure is awesome to chop away at it.

I have watched many of your videos and his has to be one of your best for me anyway because I am embarking on a new study of the Bible. My goal is to complete a one year reading plan which I think I can do in 6 months of my new ESV Study Bible from Crossway that you and so many others have recommend. Also, I am looking at several bible apps to see how those can add to my study journey. In the past I relied on our service bible readings, but since our Paster stays with only one lectionary, the readings are repeated each year. I will look at l one of the New Testament commentaries that you recommended, adding them to my Amazon wish list for future reference. Thanks again for your always thoughtful and encouraging youtube videos.

Tim, thanks for sharing this. I really appreciate your big picture concept. For example, after reading the Hebrew Scriptures, my big take-aways were that God selects flawed people to work through, that the greatest commandments are to love God, your neighbor, and take care of the most vulnerable in society; and it really offends God to hurt those most vulnerable and to raise idols to false gods. Cherry-picking scripture inevitably leads to false assumptions about God or getting hung up on tangents. The Bible is best read and understood in its entirety. I hope you can continue your studies with Tom Wright. Mike

There are many wolves in sheeps clothing who wrote books and are in the "Christian" section in books store. I'd love to know how you choose your books as a reformed baptist. Please let me know your tips, or if you have a list of reputed authors and such etc. Thank you so much! I'd love to become an avid reader this year 2022. Btw, happy new year!

Happy New Year… I think we all need to be thoughtful about what we read and from who. I tend to trust the work of those published by established publishers… and those with a well known reputation. But I also like to read the work of people I disagree with from time to time… always trying to be wide and thoughtful as I interact with someone else’s perspective.
