Malcom seems like such a sweet gentleman. While watching the stream, after he had just suffered a heartbreaking lost in one of the worse ways possible, could see he had a chuckle or two with you about something before leaving the table. P.S. I'm enjoying the beautiful cinematographic introductions to your recaps. Very well done!

The chess excitement for me this week was discovering that I have a 'Pia Cramling number" (like Morphy number) of 2, and a Bellon number of 2. In fact, that has been true since the Hastings 1985 tournament where your parents also played each other. Maybe it was the first time your parents met? My connection to them is having played John Fedorowicz when he and I were both teenagers in New Jersey. I was rated 1300s, he was rated 1800s and improving quickly when I played him. The game was at a club where the strongest player to often show up was Mike Valvo. Valvo was 2260 at the time, but later 2500 and along with Botvinnik, was a leader in the quest to strengthen chess play by computers. Valvo had played Najdorf, so that was cool to find out also just a year or two ago, I think when reading Valvo's obituary. The chess community is large and small at the same time. I also found it amazing that the oldest game shown for Pia in the database I searched, was a draw against Kasparov, in a tournament for kids under age 16. Quite a way to start the list of games, drawing a future World Champion. It was also amazing to see her results against some 2600+ players when still a teenager. Starting out 2-0 against Korchnoi is pretty amazing! Wins and draws against other strong grandmasters. Maybe the first time they played her, they thought a cute girl with a rating so much lower than theirs was not anything to worry about? I watched most of your games in Reykjavik live, or soon after. This one I missed. I am glad it was not one more example of your problems being caused by unnecessary time trouble, even if it really should have been if he didn't blunder. It pains me to watch you see a very good move in 30 seconds, and then not move for 30 minutes. I know that habits are difficult to change, but that habit will need to change if you want to improve. You can't give opponents time odds every game, without enough compensation!

Early advice: give your king space. Everyone under 700 constantly hangs a back rank mate. They castle which is mentally "safe" and then completely forget that the pawns only block the front.

If you've got a generally defensive position, unless there's an obvious threat like a pin or battery, the corner is almost always better, even though it looks stupid. You probably can't move, but you certainly can't be attacked through the wall.
