Thanks for this clip, I was incredibly frustrated trying to get clean shots of red-rumped parrots/grass parrots. As you would be aware they seem to like the shadows whilst on the ground however when they get into the trees they often are obstructed by leaves and branches. After watching this I decided to have a wander around our farm and find a few dead branches I could use as perches. I have a small planting of sunflowers but I often lose the birds on the ground so I planted my perches and within about 30 minutes I had several birds using them. Needless to say the shots were exactly what I was chasing. Thanks again

This might be my favorite video you’ve made to date. The transparency is great, and IMO staging/styling does not diminish the image. Personally I nearly always go for an artistic angle (mostly in post) to my wildlife shots. I think there’s room for photographic “purists” and photographic “digital artists” as long as you are not misleading the audience; I feel you’ve referred to your techniques often and Ive always appreciated that.

When I started watching this I was initially thinking that I don’t really like Set Ups but then I realized that my entire backyard is a Set Up. I have feeders for Hummingbirds and seed feeders for other birds. We put out worms daily and have a fountain for the birds. I like to shoot other places but much of my bird photography is done there and that’s where I’ve gotten some of may favorite images. Great video with really nice images. I know you’ve reviewed the R5 in the past but I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on it and the RF 100-500 and how the R5 compares with the R6 now that you’ve had it for a while. I am currently using an R6 with the Sigma 150-600. I’ve had the lens back ordered for a while and am thinking that the R5 is perfect for that lens. I think I will be less likely to miss the extra 100mm of the Sigma. I won’t miss the weight difference.
@Duade
@Duade 2 жыл бұрын
Rod, the R5 is very similar to the R6 with the only real difference being the sensor, the 45mp is nice to have if you crop a lot. The RF100-500 is a very versatile lens but I do wish it went to 600mm as 500 can feel a little short at times on the FF camera. Good luck with your gear, Cheers, Duade

Yep, that photo of the Redcap robin made me smile😊 fact it's a setup does not take away from the image at all. 1 thing I've learn with setups is once you got photos of 1 species on the perch, change the perch before other birds come in. Otherwise you will have photos of a range of birds that all look the same and in a collection then it looks setup. My opinion with setups is they still take a lot of skill, you have to know the birds are even around to begin with and getting the birds to land where you want is task on its own. I do feel like with some birds you litterally have to do setups (birds that are deep in scrub like heathwrens for e.g.) but a lot of the time nature is more creative than I am so the birds will lead you to amazing compositions like nectar birds landing on amazing flowers or even I found robins will always land on perfect perches at eye level. Another thing with setups is to aim for a little more behaviour in the shots as you did in this video, even in bird hides. At gluepot bird hides I pretty quickly got photos of single birds on a perch, so quickly I knew I had to be a bit more creative, aiming for flight photos or multiple birds in 1 shot, Jan W did it with his mulga flight shots I think were in a hide.
@Duade
@Duade 2 жыл бұрын
Kurtis, I couldn't agree more, it can be a real challenge to execute a setup and I am learning all the time. I agree that I have got plenty of lovely shots without setups, but sometimes I like just sitting in a hide waiting for the birds to come to me :-) Cheers, Duade

@@Duade your right, im still learning patience. When I go back to the start of the year I was just chasing around birds and having no success. The times I've been patient ive ended up with better shots, but I still struggle to hold myself back and I always end up chasing birds around haha

Thanks for the video, there is a bridge near to me on public land where people often feed the birds so they are used to people I can get close, and they are really isolated, however the images don't look great on concrete with bird food all around. I have tried on numerous occasions putting a branch or piece of wood down, but the birds just don't seem to want to land on it. There are trees to either side which the birds land in, but this gives a very messy background. Maybe I'll have to start looking around for a rock 😊.
@Duade
@Duade 2 жыл бұрын
Paul, yes it can be a real challenge that is for sure, sometimes adding a perch to the tree can be an option, just make it extend out past the tree so it's somewhat isolated. Good luck, Cheers, Duade

Thank you Duade - I really enjoyed your video and technique. Particularly the way you built up the scene with the background, special rock, timber then local plants and foliage. The shots are magical in many ways and to be honest, it simply doesn’t matter that they are staged to any degree. The shots of the perfect wildlife are all that matters imho and if not staged, you may well not have got them. Love the natural way you speak to us and demonstrate what is possible to the non-professional. Btw, had the Sony A7Riv but swapped to the EOS R5 - more than enough pixels and better AF. Regards from UK

I have a single acre 😂🤣😂, I live on the edge of our village backing into farmland and my garden species is ok. Our old house which is on the other side of our estate, had a garden approx 6m x 4m ( yes 20ft x 12 ft ) and had double the birds feeding on our feeders. The difference was mature trees which gave the birds somewhere to feel safe.

Excellent video, I love that you enable new photographers to hopefully not get frustrated by shedding some light on these things. I setup my bird studio in my backyard a few years ago, even setup some reflectors to help with lighting on some days. I've started to like wildlife interaction or photos that relate to it's environment more lately but getting these close shots is really exciting especially as you mentioned if you have lesser gear or haven't done this. I actually got to where the birds came so close I was using my 90mm macro to photograph them. Had a few land on my lens even! Truly well done, you have and a real gem here on youtube.

Duane, thanks for sharing! I look forward to every video. Greetings from the USA, Ohio. I’ve been shooting for about a year, on weekends and whenever the weather allows it. I’ve got the R5 with the 100-500. I wanted a camera I could grow into. I’d love to see more videos on the settings you use and why. I’m getting a fair amount of good photos, but learning the settings and why to use them is ongoing! I also study the exposures you use, and try to determine how they are effecting the shot. I’m re-watching the older videos now, but something more specific to the R5 would be great. I love your style of teaching, and sharing the before and after raw files. I can’t thank you enough!
@Duade

That is great to hear and nice you find my videos helpful. I will be honest that I often don't use the most effective settings as I get caught up in taking the photos. I think the SS is the most important thing to keep an eye on as if it gets too low it will lead to motion blur which is an issue with moving subjects. It is always a balancing act between ISO and SS that is for sure. I will look at doing a video hopefully in the future. Cheers, Duade

Maybe I'll finally set up something in my backyard next to the bird feeder. Your video gave me some interesting ideas for things to give a go. Lots of birds in our area feed on Sunflowers and thistle, by hanging around stands of those plants and looking for a good vantage point for backgrounds and light, I have been able to do a lot of what I guess you could call natural set ups. Your Robin with spread wings is certainly an amazing and beautiful shot. You have every right to be proud of that one! Good on you.

While I've never heard anyone complain about set-up shots, I don't doubt they exist as humans will human. I take it those that take issue with it are haters who are envious that someone else got a good photo that they didn't (or they wandered around for weeks to get a similar shot). Not like it was taken in a zoo. Spending weeks to get a picture of a bird that you can set up a perch for and get it in hours at worst seems like stupid if the goal is the picture (vs the hiking). Reality is no one in the general audience viewing the photo gives two shits about how it was captured, they only care if it is an interesting, beautiful shot.

Curtis, thanks for your comment, it is a divisive subject, and I can respect both sides. I think for me, photography should be a personal pursuit that you do for enjoyment, not for what other people think of the image. Yes, it is nice to get recognition for your efforts but when we start getting our value from others' opinions it can start to negatively impact your photography. I got caught up in the forum/instagram feedback loop and I would be upset if I didn't capture a shot that I thought would get lots of likes. I have actually found I enjoy my photography more when it is not reliant on the likes of others. Cheers, Duade

Hi Duane. One technique I use with landing shots is to use a wireless shutter release. Find it easier to see the bird flying in if not looking through the viewfinder Bob

Duade, I love watching your videos. With your help I am starting to get better images already! I've only done 4 sessions so far. This set up is cool but I agree it can get a little boring if all pictures look so similar. I'm from Brazil, but I have been living in Australia for 2.5 years. This is where I picked this hobby. I am so lucky because it's so easy to find birds here, even living in the city. Love the aussie birds! Can't wait to go back to Brazil and photograph some birds there :)

They're still real birds, doing what real birds do, so I don't see anything wrong with helping them find a nice spot. I just wish I were better at it. Tomorrow, I'm gonna go on a perch hunt.

Enjoyed your very practical video, have watched your videos before, the first being your interview of Jan Wegener. What I found amazing is your use of live bait, many countries including mine, South Africa, it is considered unethical to use live bait. I look forward to your comment.

G'day Kirk, thanks for your comment and question. It is an interesting debate and I respect both sides. I have no issue feeding the birds the worms, I do it every now and again and the birds are not reliant on it. I have been feeding these same birds for 3 years and have not had any issues whatsoever. The worms are very similar to their natural prey and I breed and feed them to my chickens as well. Ultimately each photographer should do their own research and make an informed decision. Cheers, Duade 👍

i usually don't go easy on my like button nor on my subscribe button, but I admit I watched and appreciated all your 100-500 reviews and this lens's comparisons to the 800mm. yet I'm still not able to take a decision. ( I tested the 800mm but not the 100-500 yet ) ... this video was opened automatically and I should say I was happily smiling learning the tricks you shared (I never thought about these tricks before ) I would feel bad if I left without dropping a like, a subscribe, and a comment to thank you for these excellent videos ... keep it up with the great work.
