Lines. . . Lines everywhere. I went years before I taught myself about this. So thanks for teaching those who don't know yet!

It’s surprising to know that even simple lines can convey this much.

I think it’s because of the fact that illustrations are already so simple (compared to reality) that the select few elements present will carry a all the weight in the interpretation of the picture, so altering any of them has a big impact.

Super helpful!! I've seen a lot of artists with WONDERFUL line art, the varying widths is just really appealing and interesting to my eye, so this is a big treat! Thank you!

I love drawing with thin consistent lines. I adore the way shows like Adventure Time look, and yes I know animated shows often ditch line weight variation because it animates easier, but I believe the style has value in a still illustrative form too. Done skilfully with good understanding of shapes, it can in a strangely emphasize the "content" of the character because your eye can't easily read where a pen stroke begins or ends

Even though I already know all these the way you organized and presented it made me understand all of it way better than I did before. Makes me excited to do more and better lineart studies

This was really helpful, thank you! I'm thinking about these different line qualities in my drawings a lot... I still struggle when those guidelines are conflicting - such as an edge in the foreground, that is also in the light. Every artist seems to come up with their own solutions, which I guess is a good thing :) So I try to develop my intuition and avoid being too strict with the rules for lineweight.

Not a lot of people talk about lines, I think lines are sometime more important that alot of deatil, for example full metal alchemist, the art look amazing, not only for it detail, because I think the art fell it for it lines, the creator put the right lines on the part we suppose to focus more, like sometime it on the fist, mean Edward gonna punch someone, I think the lines work for the tone of the story and It well done.

Hey, Toniko! I'm looking to get started on my 2D art/animation journey. I don't have much experience and I don't even know if I'm cut out for this kind of thing. So, I'm thinking of learning a free software, as opposed to something spendy. Would you be willing to do a video covering OpenToonz and the off-shoot of it called Tahoma? These seem like the best options to me, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on them.

great video topic - though i suppose this does not really apply when it comes to coloring right? at that point assuming we do the "flat colors" then coloring in those clipping mask - is when one would use a soft brush?
