How did you vlog and edit on trail? As this is a highly requested question I thought it would be a good idea to do this as a video to explain how I vlogged from the PCT, how I edited the footage, what equipment I had and what software did I use.
There are probably hundreds of different set ups and ways of doing this, but in this video I show you how I did it on trail. I am not saying it was perfect as there are things I know I would have liked to improve, which is why this video isn't titled 'How to Vlog on Trail', but its what I did on the PCT with what I had and it worked well for me.
All the apps I used for editing the videos and photos were all free, the only cost was the time and effort I had to put in to learn how to use them for what I wanted to achieve (and no I am not sponsored by anyone).

This is THE BEST vlog by a hiker I have ever watched on "How to Vlog"--trust me, I have watched the lot. So very, very helpful and, might I say, a work of art in itself. What you appear to accomplish with ease is no doubt the result of years of training, practice and talent. Thank you again for taking the time to vlog your amazing journey, and to do it so beautifully. You are a wonder.

Thankyou for such a positive comment Nancy! I’ve not had any training on videoing before so had to self learn a lot over the last year or so. I think my photography knowledge helps a lot, but there is still so much I feel I need to learn to improve☺️

Wow. This was so thorough. Excellent. I especially appreciated how you did not rush your hand movements when showing how you edited. So many tutorials go lickety split and you have to rewind to see what they did. Your pacing was perfect! 👌 And your marvelous sense of humor was there in showing how you have to wait ....endlessly....for things to upload. 😆. I have a new appreciation for all the work that goes into making these videos. And thanks for the tip about white balance and image stabilization when shooting a still photo. Very, very helpful. 👍 You are such an amazing visual artist! Thank you again, for sharing your hard earned knowledge. 🙏🏼💕

That is so kind of you Karen, it did make me laugh when I saw your earlier comment before you watched the video🤣 I'm glad you thought the pace was okay, I was a little concerned as people do usually go so much faster and I hoped my slower pace wasn't too frustrating - but I thought how would I like to see it done (as I try to think with everything)

Yes. I hate the "like" and "subscribe" in every video. If someone "likes" your video telling them to do that doesn't change whether they do or not. Not many hit "like" on videos anyway. Not sure why. I always do because it lets me know that I've watched it. Helpful when you miss one or two. You just go back to the last "liked" video and move to the next one. And telling people to "subscribe" probably hasn't made anyone do that so no need to remind people.

Excellent. Thanks for this. I'll have to watch it several times to understand the process. I don't own a cell phone so that part is something that I'll have to figure out. I photograph and take videos with a DSLR but don't edit them (yet). I used a Gorilla Pod and TBH that was a PITA. Hard to wrap the legs around a tree and get it tight enough so that the camera didn't slowly move due to the weight. Watching different Vloggers and looking into what cameras (or cell phones) they used and checked prices and will buy the one that I like the results of best. Loved all of your videos. Excellent quality and interesting. Thanks, again, for showing us how you did it. A couple of the biggest complaints were the wind noise and on some the volume of the music was louder than the person normally talked and every time it went from Vlogger speaking to music we had to turn the volume down then back up to hear the Vlogger. Quite a few, including me, told them so they could correct that problem. Also, the background music drowned out what they were saying. You were aware of both of these problems and was on top of it. That was another thing that made your videos a cut above all of the others. Many can learn valuable pointers from you to improve their Vlogging.
@MarysOutdoorAdventures
@MarysOutdoorAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so very much for your kind words again Deborah, it certainly can be a challenge with the wind noise and background music if you aren't careful. I think sometimes I just couldn't get around the wind noise so I just didn't talk much as I know how hard it can be to listen to. Hope you are keeping well ☺️

Hi Mary, Avid watcher of your PCT and your detailed prep. You persevered on the trail, proud for you. I was supposed to go in 2019 but had a loss in the family. I wasn't successful in Oct to get a permit but I got lucky this Jan and got one it looks like. I have had the last question in my preparation to answer and you just did that for me. I found that my camera sank down because it was heavy (probably 4 lbs. It's a DSLR). Also it was hard to wrap it around a tree and get the legs to stay tight. Velcro straps would have been better. Looking into getting the set up she has and remote so I don't have to edit so much (shut the camera off on the back-tracking).

Terrific video! I’m an avid hiker & backpacker and want to improve the videos of my adventures. This video has me leaning towards purchasing the Canon G7X Mark II. Couple ?’s: - How does the camera operate in cold temps? Down to the teens? - is there noise when you zoom in/out when videoing? - how did you create your wind reducing fluff and is it covering the microphone or is it placed in front of it? - are you pleased with the durability of the Cannon? My current Olympus Tough camera has lousy video stabilization and the wind ruins many of my clips... so grateful to have found your channel.
@MarysOutdoorAdventures
@MarysOutdoorAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Summit Seeker! *The camera worked with no problems at all in low temperatures so I was really pleased with that. *There is a little noise when you zoom in and out unfortunately - I used to mute it where it was very noticeable and put music over it. *To create the wind reducing fluff I glued one side of velcro over the microphone - cutting out the middle so it didn't cover the holes, then glued the other side of velcro to the underneath of a fluffy hat (which I didn't cut the middle out of). I can therefore take it off it I don't need it on. *Yes I am very pleased with the durability of it! *One thing I don't like about it to be honest though is the fact that dust can get into the lens which is a pain. Quite annoying when you think it is all sealed. There are tricks out there of removing it by drilling holes etc which I am sure you can look into if you ever have that problem but I never wanted to risk that so I sent mine off to get it removed which cost a lot. I have not upgraded to the Mark 3 which is supposed to have improved it - but the autofocus isn't as good which is strange. Hope that helps!

Thank you for this informative video, Mary. I was curious about the part where you said you always save the videos in 1080p because whenever I watch your videos they are mostly in 720p, and this particular video was down-res'd all the way to 480p! I watch on a big screen TV with Roku. I wasn't aware, until tonight, that I could change the resolution. It was set on Auto and for some reason it wasn't selecting 1080p for your videos. So I manually selected 1080p and now it looks great! I don’t know why I haven't had that issue with other's videos. But the mystery is solved and I can happily watch your videos now. 😊

Thank you so much for sharing that with me Larry, I have had a couple of people say that about my videos which left me scratching my head as I couldn't figure out why it happened with just a few people but not the majority. Amazing! I always wondered the necessary steps for vlogging. You just explained it all in easy to follow steps. Your vlogs are some of my favs. Now I know why. One really big issue most have is the volume of music vs talking. Many times I was having to adjust the volume several times during one video with other bloggers. Their music would be way too loud in comparison to them speaking. Thank you much Mary for sharing your expertise & experiences. 😊

Thanks, Mary. This is fascinating stuff. I haven't seen anyone I've followed on YT explain this process before. It's interesting to see an overview of the editing process from your side of the camera. Good job! I now have a greater appreciation of all your efforts during your 190 or so days on the trail!

GOOD MORNING ;-) Thank you for your helpful and detailed insights about vlogging while on the PCT. I have to admit, that i assumed, you had someone at home editing your videos during your thruhike ;-) I don't think I would have the nerve to edit videos on a smartphone, sitting quite uncomfortably in the tent, after a tough day on the trail.

Good Morning Franky1! Now that would have been so nice, it would have saved me so much time and I might have finished before the snow got me! I didn't edit for long on an evening and only some evenings I edited as I preferred to stay present on trail so it was only to catch up. I usually did most of it when in towns.

Thanks for the info, very helpful. How much footage did you shoot? Did you have many memory cards full? When you edited the video on your phone, did you then delete the completed videos to make room for the new files? Sorry for so many questions, but no one really talks about these things. What's your next outing?
@MarysOutdoorAdventures
@MarysOutdoorAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure how much I shot, probably around only 10% more that didn’t go into the final videos. I filled all my memory cards & phone. It was like a game trying to edit and upload so I could keep freeing up space. After each video was completed and uploaded I deleted all the footage as I went along and only really backed up my photos to iCloud as it would have been impossible to back up all my videos. The ones I uploaded to KZfaq I can download at home. I managed to get some raw footage saved but very little. Please feel free to ask anything further if it’s not clear!
