This is just my personal story about what went wrong with my diagnosis, and why it took so long for me to get diagnosed. I am sharing my story in the hopes of helping others find answers sooner, and to raise awareness around the difficulties of navigating the medical system when you are young and otherwise healthy, and a cancer diagnosis is so unlikely that it doesn't come up as something to be screened for. -

I found this video last week because I was experiencing weird throat pain and my doctor dismissed it as allergies. I'm replying today because after viewing this video, I went back to a different ENT and they did an endoscopy. He found a small mass next to my larynx. It was caught early enough and I should (probably) be okay. I wanted to get in contact with this woman and thank her personally, only to find out she passed away. I'm deeply saddened by this. She may have saved my life and I only wish I could tell her...

@@manojkale4408 I had a mass on my larynx just under 1 inch in diameter. It was caught early and was still stage 0 laryngeal cancer and hadn't spread to lymph nodes yet. Surgery went well and my larynx was kept in tact. It'll have to be monitored closely for a while but for now I look to be in the clear.

@@ellaelliott4415 My pain was located to the left and above my adam's apple. It didn't hurt all the time but hurt sometimes when I swallowed, and all the time when my throat would "flex" like burping or hiccupping. It made my voice a little raspy and felt like some food was stuck in it. Turns out the "food" was a small lump that was slowly getting bigger, and the raspy voice was because it was on my larynx. My first ENT dismissed it as allergies and after viewing this video I saw a second just to be safe. I figured the first was right but I'd sleep better after a second opinion. Good thing I did! After he removed the endoscope he kinda looked at me sheepishly and said "well, we definitely got some data..." then showed me the video. Part of me wants to be really mad at the first guy, but I'm honestly too relieved to carry around that kinda hate.

This woman died. But in the depths of her sorrow, she battled, and she helped many people. This is an amazing and heartbreaking yet empowering and uplifting story. It's so easy to be overwhelmingly discouraged after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. But no matter what, you have to fight. Fight with your heart and soul. Be courageous, be proactive, be a warrior. Yes, you may not survive. But taking productive action, like doing extensive research and sharing your knowledge and experience with others, is rewarding on so many levels. It gives you a sense of purpose, regardless of how dire the prognosis. I might not survive, but I'm gonna make sure I help as many people as I can through my experience. I will fight. And I will die with grace and dignity and love and hopefully impact the lives of others and maybe help save a few.💪💪🤟🤘 stay strong my fellow warriors.

My daughter who is 30 years old has been having the esophical cancer symptoms. And she went to the doctor a year-and-a-half ago with symptoms and told them and they gave her antacids. They didn't do any testing. Now the symptoms are worse, she's having her food feel stuck right about in between her breasts just like this woman that did the video. When she drinks liquids sometimes she gets very painful hiccups. I am so sad to think that my daughter may have this cancer. She is going to be getting some tests done in the next week or two. I suppose I better prepare myself for the reality that this could very well take her life. I saw online that once you're diagnosed you have approximately 3 to 12 months to live. And that there are very few survivors. This makes me want to puke. It's my only daughter.. I have 4 unruly sons and one beautiful wonderful daughter. Tears tears cry cry sad sad💦💦💦..."Update" 11-2-2019 This is an update for all you tenderheart Bears out there. Who actually got your feelings hurt over reading my message. My daughter had her esophageal cancer test and it was "negative."🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉 She is on a drug that she has been taking for approximately four and a half years that the doctor said is probably the reason that she's having these symptoms. In other words there are certain prescription drugs that can cause a side effect like that. I'm happy to say she does not have cancer!!! hip hip hooray :-)🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊

Thats what I'm saying....when you're younger you're ignored because you..."don't fit into that age group for that certain kind of thing to be wrong with you".....when it gets worse along the way ...they finally figure that she knew what shes talking about about ....OF COURSE WE KNOW WHEN SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT INSIDE OF OUR OWN BODIES....why do you think we have to push doctors to give us testing that we need...even some of us older folks have to give firm pushes, thats how we can catch it earlier and get on it...as long as we set back and don't say nothing and pray we live through it....keep pushing young people and God bless you...!!!

I was 27 years old the first time I was diagnosed with cancer, and just like you I was told that I was a 27 year old female that had stage 4 cancer that they only found in 65-70 yr olds that smoked two packs a day... then at age 58 I was diagnosed again with stage 4 cancer.. I had gone to see my doctor several times over a period of 6-9 months complaining about a sore throat, headache and issues swallowing, he kept putting me on high doses of antibiotics and pain meds.. he thought I had a nasal infection... things didn’t go so well.. so I totally get what’s going on for you.. one more thing was at age 50 I went to see the doc because I just felt lousy, no energy, up at night thirsty and urinating often, doc felt I was depressed so he wanted to prescribe antidepressants, I stood up and looked him square on and said draw my blood and do a complete CBC now! He called me into his office the very next day and told me I was type one diabetic that my blood sugar was 670!!! I’m surprised that he didn’t send me to the hospital immediately.. idiot!! I have always been a healthy eater, exercised often I weighed 130 most of my life... .. This poor young woman lost her life because doctors don't listen to women, young or old. Ageism (towards both ends of the age spectrum), and sexism in the medical profession, are killing women. It's got to stop. What a lovely, brave young woman. May she rest in peace. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends, who must be heartbroken to have lost her.

I'm so sorry to hear she passed away. I lost my mom to esophageal cancer and my first husband to melanoma. It shouldn't have mattered that she was female and only 34. She presented symptoms and they were more or less dismissed. Doctors need to listen to their female patients. It's not "anxiety" or "PMS" or whatever females get stereotyped with. If she was diagnosed early she might be here today. So tragic.

I would also like to add that it sounded like those doctors were really caring. It’s not that they were “playing with her life” because they didn’t find it right away in a young woman with no risk factors. I am a nurse and work frequently with cancer patients like her. Given her age, symptoms, and lack of risk factors I would have suspected the same thing they did. Their diagnostic process makes sense and these thing are not clear cut. Stop saying stuff like that when they don’t get to a diagnosis instantly! THAT IS NOT HOW MEDICINE WORKS AT ALL. I have worked with some horrendous doctors and that is not “uncaring” it’s literally just the process. Medicine is complicated.

I am in school becoming a medical provider, and the first thing they teach you is, "Think horses, not zebras." The second thing they teach you is, "If you are still thinking zebras, how close are you to the zoo?" All of that means, think of the more common things first. It's almost always something common just presenting a little differently, not some crazy diagnosis. That second part means, if you're still thinking about that crazy diagnosis, how likely is it for THAT patient. Do they have risk factors? You cannot always assume the worst for patients, and run a million tests on every single patient that presents with something strange. Tests are expensive, have side effects, and are not always safe. "The number one contraindication to any test is not needing it in the first place." -another thing preached in school. Things happen, zebras DO exist, and unfortunately they can be missed or diagnosed too late. That's awful, and as a provider there is no worse feeling in the world than missing the diagnosis and having that affect your patient. But medicine is not perfect. We do our best, try to make educated decisions based off of our education and clinical experience, and that's the best we can do. I'm so sorry if that wasn't enough. But I promise, it's not a lack of care.

I’ve had it for approx 20 years. Doctors have never really been able to pinpoint what exactly is wrong with my throat or why I can’t swallow. It ranges from acid reflux to allergies to certain proteins in food. I really wanted to thank this lady for dedicating some of her time to helping others, but sadly as I read the comments I was struck with sorrow. I think some people use the dislike button in the way they use facebook emojis... none of us would put a laughing face or a thumbs up on this video if we saw it on fb (I hope)! Most of us that clicked the like button here didn't do it because we're happy that she has cancer but to acknowledge that we appreciate her making the video and sharing her journey with us. That said, yes there are always people in the world, (especially on social media where they're anonymous), that are simply mean.

@ladymadecrazy. I do agree for the most part. I feel bad clicking 'like' on a video like this, but that is what you have to do to support the KZfaqr. But some people will think like Facebook, so click the dislike, meaning they don't like the subject, and aren't being nasty. Though of course there are those people who go around just being dorks and clicking dislike for the 'fun' of it. Now that is disgusting for sure.

It was only by the grace of God that it had not metastisized... He went through chemo and radiation and just had an esophagectomy and now were waiting for his PET scan... Prayers for you, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. I was 26 I had a 11 pound cancerous Germ Cell tumor. The first doctor diagnosed me with Constipation. When me and my mom were leaving the nurse told us that we should go to the ER for a second opinion. She new something wasn’t right because my BP was extremely high. I’m thankful we listened to the nurse because when we arrived at the ER my BP was 210/168. They took me straight back and ran all kinds of tests. The doctor told me I hade a huge tumor, I was in kidney failure and I need to be transplanted to the trauma center. When I got there I hade emergency to remove the tumor. The doctors told my parents I got to the ER just in time or I would not be here today. I’m in remission but I have long term side effects from the chemo. Most of my time is spent at the doctors. Doctors need to take us more seriously no matter how old we are. I’ve had to many doctors tell me theirs nothing wrong with me because I’m to young or It’s all in my head. If doctors would start talking people more seriously and do all the necessary tests to rule out any medical conditions. Then maybe cancer would be caught early.

But this is the end 2023, 4 years later, she has died, but it gave me...NOT hope, i already know what is coming for me...but a feeling of compassion for her and compassion is a nice feeling when most times i am feeling fear, anger, resentment towards the healthy...here she is looking so alive and good....i feel good after watching her...then i saw that she has died and my heart broke...but this is a wonderful video of; im certain, a wonderful person

She took second opinion and underwent to endoscopy, biopsy, and ct scan and sadly, it was esophageal cancer. We did everything even we are poor just to help my mom to survive with the cancer but she lost with her battle last January. Pls pray, ma'am. I will pray for you.

This is my concern. This is wild. I don't hope I don't have cancer. I cant figure out what my problem is. I went to my dentist and oral surgeon last week to be evaluated about my recent dark spot in my mouth that has appeared again after years. The oral surgeon offered me a biopsy, and he said it would cost over $1,000 with my insurance. I had so many health problems since 2008 when I graduated high school. As for the month and throat problem, the roof palate of my mouth turned dark brown/black in 2017 or 2018. I had a black doctor at the time. He told me nothing was wrong with my mouth and black people have darker gums. He ignored my symptoms. Months and years later, my tonsils have been completely swollen and they never went down. The back of my mouth is always red, and there are small lumps hidden below my tonsils. I did go to an otolaryngologist (ENT) last year. He looked and immediately said my tonsils need to be removed. I still think there is something more going on. I have also been dizziness with vertigo since February. I have a neurologist appointment on May 3. My mouth and throat has been red and swollen since 2017 or 2018. It looks hideous.

Thanks for putting your video out there. My name is Mark, and I have recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer also. Feb 11 2019 to be exact. I really think someone should have done proper testing a long time ago. My first symptoms back in mid May 2018 were, I would have a slight burp, then a slight chest pain would slowly come in, hang there for a couple seconds, then go away. As time went on, this would happen more often, with gradually worse chest pains and upper back discomfort. This may have been the GERD. Eventually the chest pains were getting pretty bad, especially when I wake up in the middle of the night. The chest pains got bad, but didn't really hang around for very long usually. I seen a clinic around July 18 2018 about the chest pains etc. We did all the blood tests etc. and the Dr. referred me to a cardiologist, and we were to go from there. The blood work looked ok as far as cancer, however I did have high cholesterol. I was referred to a cholesterol course, which took place Nov 20. By early Oct 2018, I started to have the problem of food getting stuck in my chest area, and pain full swallowing (dysphagia). Chest pains still there as bad as ever and dysphagia, I decided to go back to the clinic end of Oct to mention my new symptoms, as I was still waiting to hear from the cardiologists. I requested to see the same doctor that I seen in July, but they sent me to a different guy instead. I explained to him the history of my symptoms and steps I have taken so far. He asks me what is your anxiety? I told him, I had none. Eventually he asks me what I think it was. I said, I'm not sure, but it COULD be cancer. Then I explained to him how my dad died at an early age of cancer. He goes to his computer and looked up some kind of fancy scientific name for anxiety, and he told me that is what I had. He said I have anxiety because of my dad dying a long time ago. (I know I had no anxiety on this, CONCERN, yes, but not anxiety. He told me to just wait until after I see the cardiologist and then we can go from there. He did at one point mention, he did not think it was a cardiology type problem and could be esophageal if anything. I didn't have anxiety, however, if I did, I think that some kind of esophageal test should have been done. Anyway, decided to wait for a while longer in hopes we can get this cardiologist thing out of the way. December 4ish, cardiologist phones and asks me a bunch of questions over the phone. To them it sounded like GERD, however they said they would get back to me. Early January 2019, the GF is getting tired of me waiting around and books me an appointment with her family doctor. Seen the doctor Jan 14, sent me for Barium x rays. Jan 18 she notifies me of a 8cm long tumor in my esophagus which could be either benign or cancerous. Jan 21 2019 CT scan. Feb 6 2019 gastroscopy and biopsy of the tumor for malignancy. Feb 11 2019, Yip, its cancer. Wait, wait, wait, got a consultation appointment for Feb 25 2019 with a Cardiothoracic Surgeon in a couple days from now, also booked in for a PET Scan for Mar 7 2019, to find out what stage, (I can only imagine). I think this waiting around just might get me eventually. I know this is a long comment, but it really could help someone. I did not find this kind of info about my symptoms in the early stages. Oh, by the way, the Cardiologist office phoned me Jan 21 to book me in for an appointment on Jan 25. I told them I no longer need their services as it is a tumor. That was pretty much a 6 month wait. Anyway, really plan to do battle on this thing as soon as things get started, I have drastically changed the eating habits.

Hi Mark, I am soooo so so very sorry for your journey so far. I am hoping and crossing fingers and praying for you that you don't have any metastasis like me. Nonetheless, and regardless of whether or not you do you are right: lets battle this! We can do it and I so appreciate your super long comment. I agree it should help someone else. I wish so much that I had seen a comment like yours when I was crying over the sink/bin/toilet (after dysphasia) when someone would figure out what was wrong. I think it is remarkable that in your case too they gave it the anxiety label. It seems to be the go to for stuff that isn't clear and to avoid expensive tests. Then again how expensive is a test compared to the long treatments we go through, and the life altering craziness? I think there is a lot wrong with how diagnostics work, and I just wish that in 2018, when I started having a gut feeling (that is all, I had no symptoms) I would have taken myself for a private CT test just to calm the voice in my head. I didn't and I wish I had because without question it was already there. Anyhow, back to you: I am glad you are also tackling your diet. I have as well. I was always healthy but did have a 5 year period of not-so-healthy life (not just diet, but also lifestyle, sleep, work, etc). Cancer, I believe, is a very multi faceted issue and when people tackle a lot of areas in their lives at once, they seem to do better and live longer. Again, let's do this together. I know we can! contact me anytime you want to talk, vent, or discuss treatment options. I've discovered we are our own best doctors.

I hope all is going well with you too. I never realized that there was so much waiting in between tests and meetings with doctors etc. I guess I'm not the only one with issues. I had my consultation with the doctor yesterday. He didn't really tell me anything that I didn't already know, however I am now referred to a cancer clinic for once my PET scan is done. That is one thing he told me, if it hasn't spread, it would be chemo and radiation for two months, then one month wait, then surgery possibly. I like to keep positive, however, if I were to bet money on this thing, I would say it has probably spread, just because it has been with me for so long. I also like to be prepared. I don't have much fear, although I have had my moments. Just thought I would give you a little update. I really hope things are going well for you still. I too had esophageal cancer in the middle of my esophagus. It started out feeling like there was an obstruction when I swallowed. 2 months of rx prilosec didn't help at all. Endoscope Oct. 8, 2019 showed a fairly large mass / cancer. 6 weeks daily radiation & 6 weeks chemo. 4 - 6 weeks of rest ( the body needed to recover from the aggressive treatments ). The treatments did what they were suppose to do by significantly shrinking the cancer. April 15, 2020 Mayo / Rochester, MN underwent surgery to remove the esophagus and a couple of suspect lymph nodes. Stomach was reconstructed ( brought up to connect to my throat / small amount of remaining esophagus. 2 week hospital stay, lower intestine feeding tube for 8 - 10 weeks. Nothing at all to drink ( NPO ). As of today I still go in monthly to re dilate the scar tissue where the stomach & remaining esophagus connect. But so far no more cancer. I have just recently ( within the last few months ) been suffering from bad acid reflux. I'm so very sorry to learn of her passing. Thank God I had a very good primary care Dr. that listened and got right on it.

My Mom died of this cancer. She went to the doctor three months in a row. Twice they told her she had a pulled muscle because she was complaining of back pain. The last doctor told her she had a UTI, meds, sent on her way. In the fourth month, she called an ambulance because she could not even get out of bed. She went to the local hospital, there she was diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Her back was fractured in multiple areas from the cancer dissolving her vertebrae and that was why her back had been hurting for months. She left the hospital to a hospice facility and she passed in exactly 6 weeks. I miss her so much. Be your best advocate and demand testing. My Mom’s doctors never even xrayed her back months prior. It might not have changed the outcome but we would have had more choices and time to act.

I found this video because I was looking for the problem that I am having where my food is getting stuck up in my Esophagus. It causes my great pain behind my sternum until the food slowly and finally goes down into my stomach. I thought that my stomach was just full of air or something but it may be cancer. I am a white male of 66 years of age. I live in Australia. I realize now that there are foods that I have been avoiding eating as they get stuck. Baked chicken skin will always get stuck in my esophagus and I thought that I had just become allergic to it or something. I realize that my diet has changed so that I mainly eat mashed vegetables and soft stuff like that. I will go to see the doctor next week and see what he has to say. After what this poor girl had to go through and then passing after only 5 months I have decided if I have the same cancer as her to let nature take it's course and I will just pass on as well. My dog passed on 5 weeks ago from a brain tumor. 27.11.2019 Ok I now have the final definitive diagnoses and it is stomach cancer. I am loosing weight but my stomach is swelling up. I am existing on 1 bowl of rice bubbles breakfast 1 egg on 1 piece of toast for dinner and another bowl of rice bubbles for my evening meal at 5.00 in the afternoon. I have to force myself to eat even this small amount of food. I am just not hungry any more. How long around 3 months maximum and then I will be off to see my beautiful dog that passed from a brain tumor. I have lived the good life of a bachelor having never married and the only things that I really loved were my animals and riding my motorcycle. My animals are gone now and I am having all my assets sold off car, bike, house, every thing and I am donating the money to the RSPCA and to cancer research. I am so ill that I will not be sorry to go when the time finally comes.

Years ago I had trouble swallowing which required an outpatient procedure to dilate my esophagus. Scar tissue had built up at its base from acid reflux and nearly closed it off. Knowing that this can lead to esophageal cancer, when I had my most recent colonoscopy, I insisted on getting an endoscopy at the same time to see if any of the scar tissue had developed cancer. Thankfully, the site looked fine, and a biopsy came back normal. Greatly relieved.

@@Angel-tv5lq me too. I've been several years and without the right diagnosis. I'm scared of doctors. And my life is destroyed because of that. I hope you can be diagnosed soon. You're not alone with this problem. Do you know the actress Selma Blair, she struggled with the same. Doctors didn't take her seriously for years. Tests done and apparently normal... Finally, She was diagnosed the last year, she has MS.

😢So sorry to hear this story. I had a similar experience and it took me 18 months to get diagnosed with cancer because I "was too young" and it was "women's troubles" (I had womb cancer). Makes me so mad that we have to fight to get taken seriously 😞. But I was one of the lucky ones and got through it. RIP

My brother-in-law is currently battling Stage 4 esophageal cancer of the distal esophagus like you. And good news! He is responding to chemotherapy! At your age and the fact that you COULD HAVE been diagnosed in a less advanced stage, it would be hard for me not to get an attorney and slam one or more of those doctors with failure to diagnose. Young people DO get cancer so when you are reporting significant symptoms and failure to improve with conservative measures, doctors need to be reminded that young lives matter.

thank you for sharing your story, it's so brave of you to do that and I can only imagine how strange it may have felt for you to be that person who "is doing all the right things" and then still ends up with a diagnosis like this. A close friend off mine is going through a similar situation and I can see him feeling really isolated being a young person with cancer. I've sent him your videos though, and think it will do some good. Keep up the great work and keep sharing!

What a brave and generous thing to do, creating a video will no doubt save a life. It is so easy at any age to ignore symptoms if your medical professionals are not concerned. How many stories I’ve heard of missed diagnosis, at the cost of the patient. I look forward to more videos and wish you all the best luck.

I had that as well. It eventually lead to Barretts Esophagus (pre-cancerous cell walls) . I started talking Pantoprazole max dose which helped. But none the less, a couple years later, the Barretts did become cancerous. I'm extremely fortunate they found it when the did at Stage 1B. They ablate the tissue over the course of several treatments. But from here until I'm gone forever, l'll always be susceptible to a recurrence. And a higher risk candidate for many other cancers. Take care people. Get tested. Get Endoscopys and Colonoscopys. They dope you up so much you don't feel a thing, there's no shame in taking care of yourself dammit. Just do it. Don't regret the thing you didn't do.

As a nurse, you can speak up. If you see that a doctor is being dismissive, say something. Cite cases like these. It's not hard for a doctor to order a test. But it's hard for a patient to fight phase 4 cancer later.
@drzenkobilas7770

@@LisaMaryification A nurse can be suspended for 'inappropriate behaviour' for 18 months or more, before her case is heard. See Wikipedia UK 'Nursing and Midwifery Council', criticisms - nurse struck off, reinstated because of patient and relative demonstrations. Gagging by establishment. Can you think of a way of getting around it. You write to the patient, they report you because they believe their doctor or the professional and not you. Searching the internet and KZfaq videos takes time. Shoot the messenger of bad news, it is a reflex reaction. Please see my KZfaq channel 4 medical videos. I would value your comments. Thank you.

Thank you.... Thank you so much for this You have no idea how much you just helped a lot of people with anxiety and symptoms like this. I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything but a seriously I'm saying thank you. people like me go searching through the internet because our doctors say oh it's only gerd and you just need to take this medicine and the medicine doesn't help and the pain gets worse.... Then we go searching ourselves and we find out that a young woman younger than us had us off into cancer had similar symptoms to us and passed away.... We get terrified We get scared We get to the point that we are ready to pound down our doctor's door telling him to do a endoscope... I'm going to do that anyway because I got to be sure. But reading a comment like yours helps a lot It really does Thank you.

I appreciate your story! I know exactly what it was like being told you have anxiety only to find out differently and dramatically life changing. It’s both a relief and like hitting a brick wall all at once. Your story will help others and I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to hear it. There needs to be better prescreening, better gene testing, better monitoring, and most importantly better preventive care. Insurance companies don’t like to pay for preventive, they’d rather you be near death and have to pay very little. Hospitals won’t treat anything but emergencies. When you don’t have insurance you get nothing done and die from the lack of proper care and treatment. Doctors don’t like ordering tests because they assuming nothing is wrong, and eventually things never get better and require more testing. By that point it’s usually too late. Sometimes the body just doesn’t reveal itself, and could be the last minute before it finally comes to light. When you are suffering from secondary, a third, a fourth, and many other conditions, some may overlap and more hide the others. We need better preventive care that monitors our daily health. Technology, devices for home use used in screening etc. by now we sure have enough data to support better screening and detection methods.,

I hate some doctors...they are so nonchalant about certain issues based on age. Cancer doesn't show mercy and only go after a certain age group. A good doctor, always thoroughly investigates a problem when they are told it's persistent, and has worsened. It's better to be safe, than sorry!! It's someone's LIFE in the balance, potentially. It's worth investigating the issue, always. Rest in Peace ❤
