How I wash my mountain bikes

While usually my bikes are covered in mud, right now there's dust in every nook and cranny. Bike cleaning is a somewhat hotly contested topic, and many people have passionate reasons why certain bike cleaning methods are or aren't okay. The truth is though that there's not a whole lot that can hurt a mountain bike short of submerging it in water.
I hose off my bikes after every trail ride, so usually the big stuff never gets a chance to dry up and cake on. As needed, I'll do a slightly deeper cleaning to get to the stuff I missed during post ride hose offs. This is what we'll be covering today.
The first thing you should know is that spraying your bike with water won’t hurt it. What can hurt your bike is high pressure water which can actually force dirt into moving parts like bearings. To avoid this, I keep my hose on a medium spray, and take care not to blast the ends of the hubs, the bottom bracket, or anywhere else with a bearing seal. Everything else gets blasted.
To loosen up grime in the cassette, I use a little WD-40 and a brush. This is the same way I clean my chain and the pulleys on my derailleur. You could use Simple Green, or any other degreaser for this purpose, but just remember that these are all solvents. Solvents remove grease and oil from your bike. WD-40 is sometimes mistaken for a lubricant, but it’s not. WD-40 is a solvent, and it’s great for cleaning.
As for this brush I'm using, it's okay, but I used to use a dollar store toilet brush, and in some ways it was actually better. The long bristles you’ll find on a toilet brush can really get all up in that cassette.
The rest of my bike gets cleaned with a rag and dish soap. Not very high tech, but it gets the job done.
You might also notice that between these two mountain bikes there's only one front wheel.
So yeah, that's one less thing I need to clean today.
While drying your bike with a towel helps prevent water spots, I just drop them from a couple of feet up to shake them off. You could also ride your bike dry. To me, bike cleaning is more for maintenance purposes than it is for cosmetics so I'm not concerned with them being showroom clean. After all, mountain bikes look better when they're dirty anyway.

@@PeanutBuddha I don’t completely agree with you on that. While his riding style is arguably hard on his bikes, he understood the implications of pressure washing his bike and took it apart afterwards to access and fix any problems it caused. Also just because he was given his most recent bike by DB he said it was a surprise and he would’ve been happy to keep riding the other one for a few more years

to all saying its not a big deal. IT IS. Contaminated breaks perform terribly and is dangerous and a waste of money to replace Edit: I give up trying to convince people it's actually dangerous. Pls do you reading about contaminating brake pads. Solvents can get absorbed into your pads and don't wash off with water (brake parts cleaner can help) but it won't bite like it used to.

When spraying your rear derailleuer, chain (etc) make sure you protect your rotors. Simply cover it with something (like plastic nylon) otherwise a rotor will loosen which can be extremaly dangerous, and your brakes may remit. Thanks for the video, keep it up

Dish brush with Dawn for the cassette scrubbing it backwards so it ratchets that way, while getting cleaned. Spotless. I also blow into the nooks and crannies with an air compressor after a wash. You'd be surprised how much water accumulates in bearing pivots, headsets, brakes, crank arms, r/d connections, etc.

i use a leaf blower to dry bike. The wipe disc rotors, fork stantions and chain dry with paper towel. Get all the water out of allen bolt head-it will sit in there for a long time and start to rust. i usually then leave bike in sun or in garage for a few hours before lubing-just to make sure I don't trap moisture. My specialized Enduro is 16 years old and gets ridden hard and is in great shape.

I use a compressor to dry my chain, just blow out all of the water (and lubricant) above an old towel and then relube. It works with hard to reach spots too! In Holland your bike won't dry by itself in the shed in fall, winter or spring ;-)

Spraying with water works for me too, although i am a tad more careful around the brakes and the drivetrain - bits and pieces of dirt, little stones, and vegetation tend to get stuck in the calipers, between rotors and such. I'll guess it depends on the terrain you ride. Dry and rocky California, and that thick black fat soil further up north are 2 different animals...a no-brainer, if one thinks about it instead of dissing other riders. Because of the latter i like to clean the chain, chainring and casette separately, gasoline as a solvent does the trick on even the worst looking pieces...supposedly oldschool guys used engine grease for bikechains back in the day, just cook up a bowl of grease hot and thin, then submerge the chain in it, stir properly, and wait until the whole thing cools off :D Makes me reevaluate the meaning of heavy-duty

Hey Seth, I was wondering if it was normal for a bmx's bikes front wheel to be a bit thicker than the rear? Thanks

Do you use WD40 on your drivetrain after every ride/ every clean? And is it ok to use only hot water to clean the chain, or is this useless due to the lack of degreaser?

THANK YOU. you are one of the first people I’ve seen that speaks the truth. WD-40 IS A SOLVENT.
@jbratt

lance avats yes but it has a little light lubricant in it. The lube won’t last long on a chain but does a pretty good job on shift levers. The WD stands for water displacement. I like to use it after the soap and water. The solvent in it makes for a nice cleaner. Good stuff!

Luckily the one wheel you do have will work on both bikes! I think? Unless the rotor is a different size. Thanks for the videos Seth!
