Wherein our hero Durfee tells the story of how he went from being demonstrably the worst writer in the world to an elite writer and in the process getting his novels published by one of the largest publishing companies in the world. And it only took him 20 years to do it!! BTW I didn't realize the cat had slept on both my shirt and my hat before I shot this video. Hi, Brian. Let me begin by saying that you are still an inspiration to me. I own The Forgetting Moon and am working on getting myself a copy of The Blackest Heart. This video definitely struck a chord with me because I feel like I've now taken the mantle of being the worst writer in the world. Now for me, it hasn't been twenty years. It's only been seven. Unlike you, I never went to college. I do however do custodial work (I've been doing it since I graduated high school back in 2009) It sounded like you had a great time in college! Though you were told you would never be a great painter and artist, all the way up to selling your art in galleries! That's truly amazing. And then getting in touch with an agent for all those years and going through the trials and tribulations of becoming a great writer and the man you are today. For me, it's been absolutely nothing but heartache. I have all the reason in the world to give up on someday being published, but I love writing. I know it's my true love because I wake up in the morning with writing on my mind. Each night I go to sleep, I still think about what I can do to improve the current story I'm writing. I've written three stories thus far. With dozens of edits and revisions, I've sent them to certain agents that represent the kind of genre I write for. Never once have I gotten a response. A few friends of mine try to keep me in focus by telling me that I should just keep going strong. I've let all of them read the beginning of my books, but I just know that they're not interested because even they never give me any feedback. "Just keep going and keep writing," they tell me. In a time in which we have so much opportunity to get great feedback and constructive criticism by using social media and online platforms, I feel so cold and alone. I'm seven years in and feel like I've gone absolutely nowhere with any of this. The sacrifice is very easy for me to make since I'm an only child and both my parents are gone. I always thought that by the age of thirty, maybe I'd have a shot at something! Not to be a successful writer or be published, but at least on the road. Well, here I am at the age of thirty, feeling more lost now than I did when my father abandoned me when I was sixteen. My only goal right now is to figure out how to possibly get something going on my end when it comes to getting someone's attention, be it an author, an agent, anyone, to point me in the right direction. I find myself tearing up every time I go into a Barnes & Noble nowadays as I browse and read all the wonderful books and stories that have been published. The wish I have is to just see my book on that bookshelf, even if it's all the way at the bottom by itself and covered in dust. I'm not in this for money or fame. Never was. I just want to see my story, any of them, as a book. You're a good man, Brian. I envy you. - Rob

Hey you are only30! i didn't even start till i was 30! You've got plenty of time and don't get down on yourself. As long as you enjoy writing. You should also watch some of Brandon Sanderson's videos on the subject. He struggled for dozens of years too.

also look into Michael J Sullivan. He spent all his 20's and 30's trying to break through and wrote over 20 novels, all of them got rejected...he finally made it somewhere around age 50 and now is one of the most successful authors on the planet

I really appreciate this video. How many times have I thought about writing a book? Well many many times, but I’ve not put the effort into it past writing down brief ideas. I wouldn’t know where to go after that, but maybe I could find a way like you did. Who knows. At any rate, thank you.

You are one of the most enjoyable personalities on KZfaq. And your artistic talent is breathtaking, seriously . You are a genuine renaissance man with such talents in both art and literature. There are very few who can say they have the abilities that you have. I stand in awe of you. Have very much enjoyed your writing and look forward to the third book in your fantasy series. I do have a question..with your artistic talent, why didn’t you do the cover art for your books? The artist who did is excellent but with your ability it would seems a logical conclusion that you would also do cover art for yourself.

you can argue it's even way more than 20 years because even by the time you started just attempting to write I bet you've already read a thousand books if not more. That is part of the training. Nowadays I see beginning writers complain they can't break through and when I mention book names to them they never heard of them, and you come to find out they've read maybe 20-30 fantasy books total and only read a few books per year. Unacceptable! You won't even come close to making it in writing if you don't read minimum 500-1000 total books, maybe more

@billyalarie929
@billyalarie929 3 жыл бұрын
@@B.LEE.DbrianleedurfeeREVIEWS oh sure! i meant no disparaging by commenting only on the shirt. in fact, this video speaks to me in very meaningful ways, relevant ways. i don't even have the excuse of being embroiled in a world-class painting career! nor do i have that of being preoccupied with carpet cleaning, or bouncing (neither of which are very suited to someone like me, with a physical disability, but i digress). it speaks to me because in 2005 i decided, in earnest, that i was going to Be A Writer! i've yet to publish something. mental health reasons? probably some of it has to do with that. but not enough, i think. (and possibly, even saying that, is just me being too hard on myself.) market expectations? eh. those can change on a dime. so that's not it either. i should be writing what i love, regardless of the market. i've heard that advice since i started trying my hand at this thing. but the thing is, no matter how long it takes, no matter what the reasons are, i'm always going to be working toward that goal. and this video helped me to remember why that is. so thank you for that, sir.
