How I Would START A NEW JRPG Collection TODAY (2023) | Choosing Favorites & Prioritizing Publishers

Hello everyone! Today is a slightly different video touching on a topic I hope not many of us will have to go through (& I empathize with any new collectors or those who have had to start over in recent years). But I wanted to talk about the different factors to consider when starting a new JRPG collection, especially with the vast library the Switch has accumulated over the last 5 years. With so many games it can be overwhelming trying to prioritize which games to add to a collection when starting from scratch.
Today I'll talk about how I would go about this issue and offer some advice regarding publishers & titles that I think may be better to prioritize at this time. This is all speculative advice so take what you will from it!
I hope you all found this interesting and/or informative for both new and veteran collectors! Let me know which games would make your 'must' list & if you wanted to share your perspective on this topic!

I've always loved JRPGs. I actually got back into it again. I just played Tales of Arise and fell in love with it so much that I actually platinum it. I'm thinking of jumping into some of the Tales series now.

I can't even imagine having to start my collection over at this point... My wallet would never forgive me, for one. But I think you're right in your prioritization - the games you love, the hard-to-come-bys, and then the rest. There's a lot of overlap for me in those first two categories, so I'd be spending a lot regardless. Great video, Emily!

Great video, Emily! I think the Switch has quickly become one of, if not, the best platform for building up a collection, thanks to the system itself continuing to sell well, making it more viable for publishers to reprint games more often. Wondering if you would recommend prioritizing getter limited releases from places like Limited Run Games. I know the Grandia HD Collection is one of the more valuable games for Switch collectors, which is one of their more popular releases. Unfortunately have had to put a hold on collecting and start going digital lately since I may have to move in the near future and don't know how much space I'll have access to, but it's super cool to see your insights and knowledge on collecting!

Yeah totally, it's been great witnessing the Switch's huge success over the years. With regard to LRG, I would personally go for games that interest you the most. I've seen with a lot of popular titles like Grandia HD get released on playasia as Asian-English editions or sometimes even regular retail releases at the standard stores so the 'value' of those games are really not worthwhile imo. While I've purchased a few LRG games in the past they can be a bit frustrating to wait on, and sometimes the Asian-English or regular retail releases come out way before the LRG pre-orders do. So it's up to you whether to buy through them or not. I have a few pre-orders I'm waiting on now and I try to be very selective when choosing which to purchase.

Knowing that Japanese is read from right to left, and seeing the order your 20 games were placed, I can agree with your S and A ranked game choices (if Triangle Strategy wasn't pushed as a Nintendo title, I could see any one of those B ranks as a valid choice). I would definitely like to hear your opinion on value speculations, and maybe a theory on why a red coloured Switch Lite was never released in America (blue is player 2).

Just found your channel, loved the video! I started my switch collecting trying to get every switch game that I thought looked fun or interesting but when they kept releasing games left and right my wallet couldn’t keep up so I downsized my collection and only collect games I really like or the ones I need to have, 😅 anyways I’m subbing right now!

I always appreciate thoughtful comments :) And I agree - the Switch has such an extensive library and the collecting rabbithole has really gotten to be a bit much 😅 My collection has grown so much larger than I anticipated when I started focusing on it a few years ago but I feel like a collection's organic changes are some of the more enjoyable aspects about collecting. Whether it's with additions or reductions, I really like honing in on what my collection means to me and letting it evolve over time 😊

this is a great video, Emily. in Europe, the games tend to be better stocked hence the need for less reprints (especially if you buy directly from the publishers online stores). The price spikes here for modern games aren't as bad as in the US (although it does happen, like with the first Blue Reflection).

Thanks Milla! The stocking/pricing differences between Europe and NA have been interesting to follow. I wonder if there'll ever be a time when they'll completely do away with region specific versions. I doubt it'll happen anytime soon because of different region restrictions & regulation procedures. But with the rise of importing & getting rid of region locking the different regional versions seem a bit unnecessary 😅

@@orbalology They can't, because of law differences. For example in the UK the legal age of consent is 16 and for alcohol is 18. So what may be an M in America may only be a 16 in Europe. To make it a M/18 everey where lead to loss of sales in certain regions. I'm sure there are other reasons as well.

@@nicklong27 I'm aware of the different law/restrictions. With importing becoming more of the norm it seems a bit pointless imo. Makes you wonder if they'll eventually try to enforce stricter import policies for games in some countries, or come to some sort of compromise in the future to avoid the extra work.

@@orbalology No, I don't think they'll restrict imports, if anything more consoles are becoming region free these days. I think they have to certify their games for their home regions to be seen to be doing the right thing. But I don't think they care if people jump through a few hoops to import games, in the end it means more money for everyone. Nice video by the way, I have most of the games you showed :)

This sort of applies to a lot of games in general, but I've noticed in the UK games come with a lot of "stuff" when you get them at release from certain retailers, and I think that sways me to pick them up new sometimes, like SMTV came with the steel book, a poster and a keyring, Three Houses had a coin, and Triangle Strategy came with this really beautiful hardback notebook, that seems way too nice to be given away for free. I sorta wish I'd have gotten the Diofield Chronicle steel book now, but I decided to get it cheaper from a different retailer, Oh well.

Certainly, you can apply this to any type of collection. Here in NA there aren't that many worthwhile preorder bonuses anymore sadly. They've really been meager this past year especially.

Great advice! It's difficult and expensive trying to keep up with all of the JRPGs that are released on the Switch. It can also be difficult to judge which games will be hard to find later. I typically wait a month or so after a new JRPG is released to determine if I should get it sooner than later. If I see it readily available at Gamestop or other stores then usually I can wait for a price drop. If not, I go ahead and buy it at full price. Of course, it doesn't always work in my favor but it does more often than not. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Yeah collecting can be a bit tricky to navigate, but your method sounds like a solid option. I try not to be too worried when something I was waiting on (or overlooked) extends outside of my price range. There are always potential reprints and ports to other consoles (maybe even to the new Switch) that I try not to get too down if I miss something. There are also so many games already vying for my attention so it's ok if a few slip through the cracks 😅

I enjoy collecting physical games but the speculative market, pricing and availability can get very tiring. I've resigned to pick up most of these games on steam so I can actually get a good discount and price. Trying to keep in focus that playing games is more important than collecting.

I've been getting into collecting switch games so much even tho I don't play to much atm. But seeing the switch doing cartridge based games I think its gonna be huge later just because of how well the games will hold up with age compared to a cd/disk. And I know at some point in the future I will have time to play games and im collecting games I know I will enjoy and have sooooo many games left to get!

Haha I feel similar. I've been scooping up so many games recently and only have time to play a fraction of them. But you're right one of the highlights about these carts is that they were build to last. The hunt for games on the Switch is also fun in itself :)

Oh I didn't mention them but they are really good ones to look out for rn. I know they totally slashed the prices on Mary Skelter Finale and it's becoming harder to find. The double pack you can still get on the LRG Amazon storefront so that should be available for a little while longer at least. I haven't dived into many first person dungeon crawlers but they are the subset of jrpgs that tend to go out of stock the fastest it seems.

i can completely agree with the Idea factory games i collect for. I preordered Dragon star varnir from them and really enjoyed the 3 tiers of levels/planes you can place people on. the story was very lack luster IMO but i loved that it Is realatively cheap and for what its worth tried something new with the turn base genre. That being said i recently had my preorders come in for the Neptunia reverse limited collection and the Sisters VS Sisters collections come in for the PS5. I find it outworldly that a sealed version of Reverse limited is fetching almost 600+ sealed right now. and Sisters vs sisters is relatively close to what i paid out the gate. The reverse i had to have a fellow friend from Canada import from his game shop and ship it to me because the US was sold out within minutes.

Wow, I have almost every game you showed. My Switch backlog is so massive, seeing it laid out like that really put it in perspective lol. From what you showed I'm guessing you aren't a big fan of all the indie pixel jrpg all over the Switch. Those have really added a lot to my collection. Play Asia has definitely helped a lot there.

So I do have a few indie pixel rpgs, like Phoenotopia Awakening for example, I guess I didn't pull them out for this video 😅 I've been looking to buy more of the classic remasters too on PlayAsia, they are a really great resource to obtaining many of those Asian English releases.

I hope you enjoy it! It's a cool SRPG, though I had a few qualms with how they presented the story. I recommend playing it with the Japanese voice acting too if you find the English voice acting a bit slow.

I lost a travel case with 24 of my games, it was a nightmare to find them again at reasonable prices. Many of them you mentioned in this video. Thankfully I kept the boxes so finding the cartridges made it a little bit cheaper with some patience and a lot of haggling.

Great video guide Emily. I'm still waiting for Atlus to release a new Etrian Odyssey on the Switch. Maybe they haven't because is a very DS/3DS kind of game.

I would love for Atlus to continue that series on the Switch. There are a few other dungeon crawlers on the system but you're right the mapping aspect especially was so suited for the DS/3DS system it may be hard to properly translate onto the Switch.

yes i had finished P5R on PS4.. great storylines highlighting some of the social issues like discrimination, status inequality, power misuse, plagiarism, corruption, enslavement etc. Slice of Life enjoying normal school life and crime fighting life. Persona is always this good and unique. Cannot think of any other great games which is similar to the Persona series. Any?

I love the Y's games. All my other rpg favorite are on the PS1 and PS2. Lunar The silver Star being my absolute favorite then following Grandia, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy and acouple others. Those were my good ol RPG days right there. I miss those days cause I had ALOT more time on my hands. Lol

I'm glad I had older siblings who collected things. A lot of my peers sold off games in high school but I kept most of my RPG collection in tact and it's crazy how much it's appreciated. I just buy whatever looks interesting now when I see it drop to $20-25 on switch.

Those are good titles to look out for - based off of NISA's survey it looks like they may be restocking Poison Control, and Shining Resonance Refrain recently had a restock for the standard edition (so it doesn't come in that cool metal slip case). The Asian-English titles are tricky because I feel like PlayAsia has been pushing for restocks on those titles but you're right they could always stop production for those anytime like they have on a few other Asian exclusives.

The Caligula Effect 2 was such a pain in the ass for me to get a hold of. But that's just typical of NIS America in general. So I totally agree with your sentiment to prioritize their games. For me one thing I tend to do when it comes to collecting or rather not collect is can I easily access most of the games in the franchise in an affordable manner? So for example, while I'm sure I would love the Atelier games or the Trails of games, especially Trails of, is that there are so many games in the franchise and trying to collect for them is not very easy nor financially responsible FOR ME. I'd love to get Trails of Cold Steel 1-4 but them being spilt across multiple platforms kind makes my head spin. Similarly with the Atelier series, so many games on switch, even if they're not connected to each other like the Trails of games, just the thought of trying to go back purchase them all, my brain just kind of shuts down lol. That's why for games like Xenoblade having pretty much all of the minus Xenoblade Chronicles X (which is a travesty), is so appealing to my sense of collecting as they're aren't many and I was able to pick them up slowly over time. ^^ As always you knock another video out of the ballpark with your delivery and logical sensibility ^^

Yeah it can certainly be intimidating (and expensive) to collect the long running series all at once! The nice thing about Trails and the Atelier series is that if you're interested in playing them you can just focus on one of the story arcs (e.g. Crossbell or the Ryza games) to see if you like them, and if you do then you can then consider expanding the series collection or keeping it as is. But if you would rather not just dabble in a just few games in a series that's fine too!

If I where to lose my JRPG collection… I’ll go cry in a corner for a few days then go all digital lol jk I’ll probably focus on my favs and work from there I totally agree with what you said about buying games you actually like opposed to buying games just to buy them. I’m not here to judge but I like my collection to be more personal to me. I don’t factor in how rare it might be down the line

Oh I would be so sad too if I lost my collection or had to sell it during tough times 😭 But agreed, I find it so much more stratifying having a shelf filled with games I love vs. just a shelf of potentially rare games. I've been doing a lot of buying lately so I will probably have to do some shelf purging eventually. I know a lot of people are opposed to selling games but I really like organic collections, and tastes/preferences change over time so I like to have my collection to grow with me as well in that way.

@@orbalology well said. I am the same, Where the rarity thing comes in is when I am not sure if I will like a game or not AND I think it will be hard to find then I tend to just impulse buy. This is a double edged sword. On the one hand I picked up a few that I ended up loving but on the downside I ended up with some full price 60 quid games that were not my thing at all. Might have to gather up a few to sell because I also love beating all my games and hate having games sitting on my shelf not beaten lol. Weird I know.

I have an entire cubbard full of NIS limited's and the more I think about it. It really is something that I kind of wish I didn't get to deep into collecting limited edition sets, especially for games that pretty niche. The value of these are extremly high so I guess in terms of the cost worthy investment, its worth it but the games them selfs and all the money I put into it, some of them are good well others not so much. I mean literally spending $140 for a limited game that was no more then 5 hrs of gameplay lol. Not worth that cost. In any case I guess im considering just reselling some of them and get the money back and use it on something more worthwhile for my collections.

Nice collection. I notice you are missing ASTRAL CHAIN and DUSK DIVER. You should get those ones as well (they are pretty good). I got all the Xenoblade Chronicle franchise collection on my Switch. Same as YS, Personas and Bayonetta. But The rest of my JRPG collections are from my PS5 and PS4 mainly. You should get Playstation if you want to try out other JRPGs. They have a lot more exclusive games there than Switch.

I actually own Astral Chain but currently loaning it out to my brother - it's a great game! I hear a lot of good things about the first Dusk Diver and was thinking of picking it up soonish. And yup I've been slowly getting back into PlayStation collecting, it's just these days it's easier to play on a handheld system instead of on a monitor.

@@orbalology Nice. I would recommend to get a new JRPG that is coming out on PS4. It's called Samurai Maiden and it's only in Japanese and also English subtitle. I got my one from my brother when he went to Philippines last week. Told him to buy it for me as brand new. Whenever I buy and collect games, I always prefer to buy them as brand new. Not a fan of second hand.

I went to GameStop tonight and saw Trails of Cold Steel 3 for $30 and 4 for $50. I was waffling on them and went for Cuphead, Giraffe and Annika, and Hat in Time. I’m semi-regretting not picking the trails games up after seeing how good this prices were compared to eBay. I have more rpgs than I can handle, though, but I love a good story and always tell myself I’ll get to them eventually. I’m really looking forward to eventually getting into the Atellier games. 13 Sentinels was phenomenal, and going into the story (mostly) blind was a real treat. Great guide!

@@orbalology I took your advice and made the drive back in hopes I would find them, and they were still there! Afterward, I swung by the local brick and mortar game store and picked up Trails from Zero. It looks like Trails of Cold Zero 1 and 2 didn’t get a western physical release on Switch. I’ve heard that it’s best to play them in order. I can’t remember if you said you played them yet or not. If you did, what would you recommend?

@@matthewhocker956 I would recommend starting from Trails for Zero as your first Trails game if you only have access on the Switch. Ideally you can start with the Trails in the Sky arc (that's available on PC/steam deck/psp/hacked psvita) but if you want to try out the Trails games to see if you want to invest in the on other platforms then Zero is a great place to start. You can in theory jump right to Trails of Cold Steel III after but I wouldn't recommend it because the series is more enjoyable with each entry building on one another.

A coworker and me were discussing the pegi versions of games. We can't really describe why but I know if I could shell up a few more dollars for an American version I'll get it. @@orbalology I made that mistake recently with the final fantasy 7/ final fantasy 8 remaster. I ordered it on Amazon and while the pictures showed a Asian import version I got the European and I don't know why but it bugs me! Lol I should just be happy I have the game at all.

I started collecting for the switch but I eventually quit after about a year. I don't really like how a lot of games look and play on my switch. Also switch is pretty expensive to collect for considering the games don't get discounts often enough. Keeping the value is perhaps a good reason to collect switch games. Kind of a double edge sword with me.

Yeah it seems like a lot of the Special Editions are very minimal these days - just large pieces of cardboard without much content 😅 I've tried to narrow down my prospective LEs to just ~5 franchises. Hopefully I'll be able to stick to just those 😅

@@baldchinchilla the nice thing about ys is that all the games are self contained, so you can start anywhere! They focus on the same main character Adol but the story usually involves amnesia so you really need previous knowledge past games. I really love the action combat in these, they have really slick controls that make it fun and addictive. Not all the games are available on modern consoles sadly (Falcom & xseed have some beef it seems like when it comes to modern localizations after they switched to NISA). But you can most of not all on steam at least. The ones I showed today (origin, viii, ix) are good places to start, along with memories of celceta (which is on the vita or PS4).
