Hey friends,
Welcome to our first week of homeschool! We are tackling 7th grade at home, and using The Good and the Beautiful level 7 language arts. One of the questions I get asked all of the time is how independent is the program at this age? I hope this video helps you see how we are homeschooling at this age and stage, as my desire is always to help others! Leave me your homeschooling middle school requests down below!

My first year homeschooling. I have a 5th grader who is so behind academically, yesterday was our first day and she LOVES TG&TB, I love that I can sit with her and go over the lesson. I also have an 7th grader who is actually doing level 6, but so far so good! I’m hoping I can get them caught up within the year. Side note: my kids loved reading when they were little, before 6 yrs, once they went to public school they hated reading. This whole summer they both are reading, loving reading and we are at the library one sometimes twice a week! Long comment! Sorry haha! Ashlee, thank you! I have 4 kiddos. 20 yr old, 17 yr old, 12 & 10. So, I appreciate your videos, YOU & your family!

We are in 1st grade now, and use TG&TB because of your reviews and encouragement. I use to be soooo nervous about the older or later years of homeschooling, but after finding this curriculum and your channel (years ago) I feel very confident in continuing this journey!

I’m so glad you did this! I totally agree, there’s tons of info on homeschooling elementary age, but not much of any for middle school and high school. Especially with TGTB, although the upper levels are the newer ones so that could be why as well. We are first year using, and I would love to see how you set up her daily schedule, and how often you do each subject. I noticed the daily checklist isn’t available for level 6 though! I wish it was!

Thankful for this video. We are first year homeschoolers and we've enjoyed this so much that we have decided to continue. My oldest is in 7th grade and we didn't use TGATB this year, but after watching this video, I feel confident we will use level 7 for his 8th grade year. I've already ordered for my rising 2nd grader. Thanks for sharing this! I'm hoping to continue with TGATB Language Arts for the remainder of their homeschooling years.

My 8th grader is doing this. If some do not know there is a book study in place of level 8. Several features attracted us to this. Firstly, this is a great review for 8th graders. It goes over a lot of basics that some may have forgotten to do over the years. Secondly, the Geography covers Russia and United States. The USA portion is a great review and he has learned some new facts. We have not reached the Russian Geography yet. The art is truly beautiful and he is enjoying the mini lessons. He does do 2 lessons a day, because he is older. Then we will move on to one of the book studies provided.

Hi, I absolutely love your channel! I’m a first-time homeschooling, SAHM mom of 4 and I’m a bit late buying my curriculum due to finances so I was making due with a cheaper online program, which I really disliked. I’m only schooling 2 of my kiddos, 13 yr old daughter in 7th grade and my 8 yr old son in 1st (he was held back in kindergarten because he didn’t do preschool and he struggles really bad with language arts and math, which the school refused to accommodate and tried to push him to second when he wasn’t ready. This is the reason I pulled them out of school) My oldest is 16, lives with his dad and goes to public school which he hates and my baby is 2. I was battling back and forth with Sonlight and TGATB, but I have decided to go with you and use TGATB! I’m so excited and I hope they are too! The only thing I’m struggling with is the booklist and choosing which books to get for read aloud and readers for her because she is a very advanced reader (11th grade level at the end of 6th grade and she understands what she reads plus she reads fast). I want to challenge her but also keep her interest, any ideas?

Weak and hopeful are adjectives, not nouns. That's why they aren't supposed to be underlined in that exercise. As a language nerd/writer, I was trying to speak audibly to y'all through the screen. It was killing me. 😂😂 She's so grown up! And, so adorable. ❤

Hi Miriam, My name is Linda I have 7 kids total that I have been homeschooling since the beginning, I have always had multiple kids schooling at the same time. I would always try to get the younger ones started on a tracing page or a puzzle to get them started. Then after we all said the Pledge of Allegiance I would start the older kids on their math. Go back to the younger ones, giving them their bible story for the day, a printable to go along with the story to color while I continued with the older ones. I have been homeschooling for about 18 years and it does get easier I promise. I would just try to keep the little ones busy with blocks in the school room, wooden puzzles letters and numbers, or something so if they got done first they knew I would be with them shortly. It helps for them to be occupied while your teaching an older kid a lesson. Or Put headphones on and have them listen to a story on tape or cd. We used to give them flashcards and the hooked on phonics tape and they would also do that while I was busy. Anything to keep them busy. I hope that helps, keep trying different things until you find what works for your family. God bless.

We love TGTB! I'm a momma of 10 always homeschooled kids ages 18 to 1. Last spring we graduated our oldest and dropped her off at college almost 400 miles away last week. You are so right, there are not a lot of people sharing about middle and high school homeschooling online - though more bloggers than youtubers I think. (I blog.) Questions I get all the time: 1. How do you teach them subjects you don't know or aren't good at? (Ex: physics or Algebra or a foreign language). My answer - find a solid curriculum and learn with them, find video lessons, a tutor, a class online or in a co-op, etc. 2. Can they get into college? My answer - yes, easily.

What do you do when your son is taking classes that are beyond your skills? My older boy will be 13 and in 8th grade. He is taking French, Algeria 1, Intro to Physics. The only thing I can be much help with is his ELA class. I have never took Physics or French. I am worried I won't be much help to him.

I wanted to ask (without judgement) how much this curriculum focuses on "good" literature vs "bad." Even though I really love the approach overall, I have steered away from it for my kiddos because one of the sample pages was all about how books like Dogman or Captain Underpants, etc were bad. While I agree that they aren't the only form of literature I want my child to be reading, I also don't want my 9 year old thinking he's immoral bc be thinks potty humor is funny (if that makes sense). I have wondered if maybe it was a one-off type thing, but then I saw in this snapshot that even at the 7th grade level there is still a mention of only reading very censored things. Again- every family has to make their own judgements, but Jenny's standard of censorship and mine are very different. I taught middle and high school English prior to having kids of my own, and have had so many rich conversations with students about morality and choices because they are engaging with literature that shows characters grappling with immorality, so to me, context matters a lot, and I am more relaxed about book picks in that way. Anyhow, I am just wondering to what degree that portion of her moral philosophy is communicated in the curriculum?

Roseana Hinds I really don’t see the need to argue with me. What I’m saying is. MOMS WHO HAVE KZfaq channels, are not in abundance when it comes to sharing about the high school and middle school years. There are far more creators focused on little kids. If you do not have a channel than I’m not sure why you’re arguing this point. I’m simply stating again that for people looking for high school content, there isn’t much being created.
