On Friday, Iranians went to the polls to elect their new legislature and Assembly of Experts. While the results were never in doubt, the Iranian rial fell to an all-time-low. In this video, we take a look at the currency crisis, why it got worse over the weekend, and why it's unlikely to get better anytime soon.

It is important to recognize that the disorderly nature of their own house (and foreign policy) is intentional. Iranian regime (but not its "normal" people) strives in "controlled chaos" within and outside its borders. The blaming part is just a metaphorical (and rhetorical) puppet show where both the producers and the audience know that the puppets are not real actors, the producers insist that puppets are real, and the viewers are not enjoying the show nor the continued lies. The Iranian elite ensure that these two conditions are met: (1) Maximizing kleptocracy without stealing too much to the point of standing out too much against other elites. (2) Making sure that the people who are being squeezed further and further are being kept under control, so that the kleptocratic acts may continue.

Hi I,m writing my opinion about this video and topics in it, as someone who currently lives in Iran and i,m a economy student in university. 1) our economy has 4 main problems : 1:TAX : only the poorest people have to pay taxes and most of rich people don't pay a dollar, mostly dou to lack of laws, for example: a simple worker in factory with a monthly wage of about 170 dollars per month, must pay about 4 dollars as tax (1 dollar: 600,000 rilas) BUT doctors and Layers with income more than 1700 dollars in month can avoid any taxes with just simply not reporting their income. This has to be fixed immediately. 2:ENERGY subsides : 1 liter of gasoline ( benzin) is just 5 cents!!! I,m not kidding it,s cheaper than bottled water in Iran. Not in any neighbouring country price is close to it , for example in Pakistan 1 liter of gasoline is about 0.7 - 1 dollar. This price both encourages smuggling and over consumption. Natural Gas is another example, we have 2nd largest reserves in the world and 3rd largest production , BUT we still have a deficit of 450 millions cubic meters in day , mostly dou to over consumption. And everything else have subsides too , like electricity, bread and more. When you put subsides in consumption you have to face it,s problems, rich people can consum without thinking but most people don't have a car at first to use gasoline and it,s subsides, life is that cheap in Iran that it attracted over 10 million illegal immigrant . And lots of security problems as well. 3: Printing Money : dou to the previous problems, we have budget deficits and government has to print money , but beside that ,there are lots of private banks that can print as much money as they want and nobody bother them, again dou to lack of proper laws. 4: Sanctions: I put it at the end , cus i know it has the least effect on us , we are 45 years under Sanctions and we have our ways , but it,s still bothering. At worst case scenario sanction caused 10% of our economy problems. Our problems is from within not outside. 2) when you have inflation and have to print money, while you insist in fixed exchange rates , it,s like spring, when the pressure is at the most , it releases it,s energy, that's what happing in Iran , every one can see it coming, just look at the volume of money in economy today and one year ego , it,s obvious that you will have like 40-50% inflation. BUT USA media knew it was coming so they gain some political favors in people's Eyes and say , they have inflation cus we Sanctioned them more . They really milk the situation without doing anything. There is nothing and no one left to be sanctioned in Iran but they still use it to gain popularity. 3) cus of the problems i wrote about , people in Iran , especially the youngest are tired , so in the last election, most people demanded the candidates about our major problems to be fixed , that,s why about 150 of 290 members of our parliament will be made of new faces who promised to fixes thes problems. We had a two party system like USA as mentioned in this video, Hardliners and reformists , who both rule over us in the last 45 years . We are tired of old faces, so when other parties like SobheIran came to the politics, people voted for them and not the previous parties. For example the head of reformists in Tehran , didn't even came to the first 60 people in election, so they lost it and now they are saying government didn't let us in, those layers . At the end , sorry for taking your time and my average English.

@@davidgantenbein9362 let me say it in another way , we had two major parties that mostly competed with each other . Here is our political structure in Iran : 1)Supreme Leader: who controls the armed forces and can order government and parliament if it,s needed. 2) Council of experts: they will be elected by people and must supervision on current supreme leader and choose the next one from the council if current one dies or has lost his required parameters. 3) government: a president is chosen by people's vote and must appoint ministers , which they have to get a majority vote in parliament. They have the budget and run near all of the country. 4) parliament: their members are chosen by people's votes and must supervision the government and all the other organizations in Iran , must approve minister and government budget and most importantly, make or change laws . 5) guardian council : they must approve the candidates for all the elections by the laws that parliament authorized and check if new laws in parliament doesn't cross the red lines in Islam. Members are chosen by supreme leader This political structure isn't perfect but all parts of it, supervision each other and people supervision all of them . The guardian council only rejects candidates by laws , that passed in parliament and parliament members do not do anything to lose votes , so no on is rejected for nothing , they had a problem certainly. For example in the last election, 25.000 people candidate for parliament and 15.000 of the passed . Only a handful number of people have a problem with being rejected. These news that one person runs a whole country is just a propaganda, bc if they say all the members in parliament and president and supreme leader is chosen by people, then the enemy in iran would be most of the people, not just a person. If one person runs a country, why there are about one election in Iran from 1979 forward. We even choose the council and mayor of our cities. If it isn't a democracy, why it isn't?

all of that is true, but the sanctions do way more damage than you stated. the inability to trade your resources properly thus relying on few countries and having practically no country making investments in your country is the biggest factor. why do you think iran was booming under the shah? it was because it was an american puppet state and because of that was sanctionless.
