@@michaelwicklund No clue. Dodger's Yard has an interesting page about the union and supposedly there's a major process you have to go through to be fired and no one's ever been permanently let go before. Normally they just send them to the minors on probation and then they get their numbers back up by the end of it.

They’re trying so hard to win the battle over him that they’re losing the war to keep all other umpires behind the plate. The MLB should definitely implement a challenge system....would also add so much more value to the role of a Manager

For anyone that doesn't understand how unions work, there's one main reason they can't fire him (or anyone that's part of a union anywhere) and it's Attendance. Basically, if you're a garbage man, an umpire or a cop, etc. that shows up to work when scheduled without fail, you're basically untouchable. You can steal, lie, abuse and even murder people (like cops) but as long as you show up everyday the union will find a way to keep you employed. Unions are great when it comes to protecting good workers but scumbags like Angel Hernandez are unfortunately allowed the same protection. If I were MLB I'd fire him, give him a huge severance package (cuz you'd have to) and make him sign a NDA. Then once he's a private citizen I'd ban him from all Major/Minor League Baseball parks and activities.

The strike zone is 3 dimensional, not the flat rectangle that usually is shown. Also the top and bottom of the zone are pretty subjective as the batters moves around, squats more or less, etc. How would a computer deal with that?

The younger umps being brought in are actually super impressive. A few years ago someone started releasing ump scorecards and it seems like a lot of those guys started to take more pride in their jobs. Now there's an added level of excitement where umps have the possibility to call a perfect game where they make 100% correct calls. I dont think the MLB needs robots, they just need to hold their umps accountable. Every ump should have a performance review at the end of the season and they get promoted and relegated solely based on their performance. If you cant hang in the MLB anymore then you get sent down just like the players do.

Konami already did this by way of Cyber Stadium Series - Base Wars back on the Nintendo. Robots playing baseball but they allow for fighting to depict safe or outs. Because owners got tired of paying players. Needs a remake!

My question though is would the batter be able to challenge the call as well? Because if the umps calling strikes 7 inches off the plate the pitchers obviously not gonna be like. Actually blue that was a ball tighten it up back there. So does it go both ways with the challenge?

I'm on board with the robo umpires. Still need umpires to make calls on the field, call people safe, call check swings, HBP, etc. But the balls and strikes needs to be cleaned up.
@adamm2787
@adamm2787 25 күн бұрын
Realistically, check swings are more of a coin flip than called balls and strikes. If they are going to be able to challenge called pitches they should be able to challenge called swings.

@adamm2787 that's not how robo-umps would work. There's no challenge of pitches. The robo-umps will make the calls. No challenging.

@adamm2787 In full ABS, all ball-and-strike calls are made by the Hawk-Eye system and instantaneously relayed to the home-plate umpire. In Full ABS, there is NO challenge... You learn more when you differentiate. What you are talking about is the challenge system. Which is not full robo-ump.
@ReadIcculus93
@ReadIcculus93 25 күн бұрын
@adamm2787 In the case of the challange system, there would be a necessity for a full umpire crew. The Home plate umpire would be the one you'd relay your challenge to, with the robo-ump. In the case of full robo-umps, people think the home Plate umpire would no longer be necessary. Which I argued against that idea.

I think we will find out eventually that he has had a friend or family member placing low key bets on games. You can bet on all kinds of micro stats now. For example, how many strikes a pitcher will throw in 3 innings, or the total walks in a game. Those are stats an umpire can effect with little attention. Line up one friend to bet on low key stats, and you can rake in lots of money in small increments. And his beef with not getting a World Series game gives him opportunity and motive. Along with the motive of personal enrichment. Employees who steal are often unhappy with their employer, and use that to justify their actions.

Besides rewarding good pitching and making batters cover the WHOLE plate the robo ump will allow pitchers with great accuracy to thrive whereas now those guys actually get shafted way too much for a painting a corner. Batters would just have to adapt to the real zone and wait for something they can hit just as they do now

I think the "Sweeper" and Cutters are hard for the umpires to figure out especially the umpires that have long tenure. The sweeping of the ball from when it breaks is too confusing for umpires. I think they feel that the ball is clipping the front corner of the plate and then it looks way outside when it hits the catcher's glove. Or they make a decision on the call at 6 to 10 feet in front of the plate. This being said, the umpires need to adjust to the new game and learn to make the call correctly. I also want a camera above the plate so we can all see a 3D viewpoint of the zone

Issue with robot umpires is that when the ball would bounce off the ground into the strike zone, it would still be called a strike

Cricket already has a built in automation tracking system like this. It's not flawless just cause tech will always have some limitations, but generally the amount of bad calls is low.
