Just got diagnosed with calcific tendonitis. My left supersunatas shoulder. It crazy because I can lift my arm up but not in every position and the one that’s most important, using my hand to feed me when I raise my arm that way. Wow the pain makes me drop the fork, spoon etc. or brushing my teeth. It’s like I am now disabled. I keep doing the stretches and trying to strengthen the muscles around that are through PT but nothing works and I’m not getting no shots. I think I need surgery. Can’t sleep on my side anymore either. Worst thing to get as you age.

I had one and the doctor gave me a shot in my elbow and said I didn’t have to return if my pain went away. A few months later the pain had returned. I can’t straighten my arm but it doesn’t hurt as bad as first time 😮

I went through 10 sessions of physiotherapy with 0 results and my shoulder is killing me. I’ve got a 2cm calcium deposit. Will the pain go away on it’s own if I don’t treat it? I’m breastfeeding my daughter and as far as I understand my options are limited for now. Any chance the inflammation will go away without treatment?

You don't mention schock wave therapy?

Yeah don’t mention it for two reasons. 1 low research evidence base for treating calcific tendinitis. 2 calcific tendinitis is super painful and so is shockwave so not sure a patient can tolerate it acutely.

I am from India sir , my mother is having calcification in her right elbow joint since 2020 after brain hypoxia injury, it was an anaphylaxis shock due to mild antibiotic monocef ! She had a long medical history please reply how this can be treated or what next steps should be taken.

What is the best type of imaging to diagnose this? Xray, MRI with contrast? ultrasound?

X-ray is the quickest and simplest and will see the calcium. Ultrasound is best used to treat (a procedure called barbotage). And MRI is best used if you’re worried about the state of the tendon and want more detail.

I had a full rotator cuff tear 7 yrs ago. Physio soon followed with straps, compresses and exercise. To no adequate response I was discharged from physio. To this present day, I have been diagnosed with resporive calcific tendanitis and am waiting for physio next week. This pain is horrendous. I cannpt even write on paper with my hand. Plz can u advise me as a short term relief to see me through til next week. This pain IS worse than child birth and I have been through that twice. The Calcification showed up on my Xray I had yesterday but that does not help with the constant extreme pain.

I just left dentist and they did x ray because i thought my wisdom teeth were bothering me but turns out there fine but he said i have calcification spots on each side of lower jaw bone and he said he has never seen this in 20 years of x rays!!!!! I have doctor appointment with oral dentist surgeon soon to see what he thinks. Could this be CANCER?? Im freaking out. Im 36 and dont smoke or chew or dink and eat healthy and exercise alot.. i did have a bike injury when i was 12 where i smashed my jaw. Any thoughts?? Thanks.

Hi sorry I don’t have any expertise in this area. The oral surgeon should know though so I wouldn’t stress until you get their opinion.

What specialist doctor treats this illness? A chiropractor?

A chiropractor isn’t a doctor. An orthopaedic shoulder specialist usually treats this.

@ShoulderLondon hi there - Got a good one for ya. I had an x-ray on my elbow when I was 15 that showed what the doctors thought was a calcium build up in my elbow joint jst floating around, they didn't call it tendonitis as it wasn't joined to a tendon although they said it should clear up in a year to 18 months. I'm 40 now and it's still there - in fact I'm going through the worst flair up of it with the most pain I've ever had. Does calcium just build up like that in some cases, not attatched to a tendon or could it be something else. Rather concerningly my shoulder in the same arm has started to really hurt i.e cant lift or extend without sharp pain and weakness. Has occurred only in last few months but I've been trying to work it out - pushing body through the pain doing exercises in hope it would sort itself out - but alas it hasn't 😅 damn my arm hurts!
