One of the main reasons this is possible is due to the incredible feats of neuroplasticity. Contrary to popular belief, certain parts of the brain can actually interpret sensory information from supposedly unmatched modulations, which is shown in the video. The camera captures the image of its surroundings, which is then translated into a signal that is interpretable by the brain. The signal is then sent through the electrode connected to the individual's tongue and received through the same which then results in the sensory information being delivered from the tongue to the individual's brain. Although the individual's sight is completely incapacitated due to his optic nerves being severely damaged, the visual cortex is still active throughout the whole process, and what ends up happening is that despite the sensory signal being derived from the tongue, the information is still processed in the primary/association visual cortex, which then formulates the imagery that the blind man sees. The same concept has been observed in deaf individuals. The auditory cortices, which supposedly should have been inactive due to a lack of functionality in the auditory system, have shown to be quite active when subjects reacted to visual stimuli. The brain is quite adept at processing information in various manners, from many sources, and at adapting to environmental factors and its current needs.

This made me cry - both of sadness at him losing his sight, but happiness at him being able to finally see something. We don't realise how lucky we are to have our sight.. x

Embodied cognition - epic tech! Ppl do not see things merely through their eyes. As a psych student, I remember there was an experiment many yrs ago. Researchers putting stimulus (similar to this tongue one) to blind subjects' back, and one of a sudden, their visual cortex was activated. Their visual nerves were shinning like a constellation.

The back-vibrator-thing was kind of beta version of BrainPort actually, they were the same people who develops these technologies.

@@SkyChapuller What an interesting approach! Hope tech can evolve into an extent that blind ppl can see colors again (although I deem it as super hard).

This is wonderful , but long over due. They had similar technology many years ago. Only they used a large pad on the stomach. It was a lower resolution image with fewer pixels but a person could recognize objects like a telephone. It too used a camera mounted to glasses. As I said, this was a long time ago maybe 40 years. I think it was an article in LIFE magazine not sure. What took so long to get to this? Sensor development perhaps. At any rate I am glad they are progressing finally. I saw another story where they are working on doing similar with connections to the brain. Around the same period as they were working on the stomach device they was using the bottom of feet to transmit sound to deaf people. Haven't heard anything on that since. Wouldn't it be nice if the government didn't waste our tax dollars on stupid things like gender studies in Pakistan or tree frogs or aid to our enemies including terrorist countries and put more into things like this. They always seem to have priorities out of order.
