'Esther' my ST170 Mk1 Escort is FALLING APART!! 🙁
In this video I FINALLY dealt with her noisy clutch release bearing, and whilst she was apart I decided to take a look at her super cheap £40 clutch to see how it has taken all the abuse I have been throwing at it! 🤔

The slots that you cut with the angle grinder will definitely lead to failure of the clutch fork. I think you should fit a new one and find an alternative method of attaching the spring. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice! 👍 The arm seems ridiculously strong but we''ll see. I have a spare which I think I should get drilled by someone with a strong enough drill bit, and then swap the arms over.

Hi Marcus, great video pal. 👌I tend to agree with johnhurley6333, grinding those slots might not have been the best idea, as they are they ribs that strengthen that point and will probably bend in time, if not already. Take care. Top man. From S.A 👍

Hi, you have possibly weakened the arm with the cuts you nave inserted, hydraulic pressure will possibly bend the arm at that point over time...the spring was a good idea...good luck

You get a lot of work done in an afternoon. I was always of the school to not grease a throwout bearing. They are pre-greased internally, for starters. And similar to a prop shaft on a tractor, you always leave they dry so as not to attract “stuff”. I’ve found in the past, that if you grease the to-bearing, it can collect clutch dust. I don’t think that’ll happen in your case, as you’re so gentle on your clutch🧐.

I'd second that. I'm an engineer so all I do is cut metal. A center punch or even better and cheaper, a center drill. Give the drill bit a positive secure point.

I would have thought a light return spring would still be a beneficial thing to fit, as it would keep the bearing off the clutch when released. For the pennies it would cost, I would deffo fit one.

Hi mate. Quick question about the Santapod Ford Show. If I booked to be on your clubstand , am I able to change what car I bring after the 31st of May deadline? I'm hoping to get a Fiesta ST180 in the next month or so, which I would much rather bring that than my 1.2 Zetec 😆.

The seal means it's a "sealed bearing" meaning it has grease already and is kinda non-serviceable (at least without trying to remove the seal and the damage that may result from doing that).

what about a duratec 2.3 on carbs?
@starfox_wr-45e93
@starfox_wr-45e93 2 ай бұрын
I've seen the st220 lumps mated to a Jag RWD box so it's probably possible. Engine is pretty large, espesically with all the ancillaries, so it probably isn't easy. Would be cool as heck tho. 4-banger 2.3 Duratec mentioned above by @t238 would prob be more do-able as a driveway job. 5-pot Volvo lump would be sick too, I reckon. Worth the effort for that sound alone with one of them imo.

Didn’t you have an open circuit on the cam sensor. Don’t know if you sorted it.
@marcushayesford
@marcushayesford 2 ай бұрын
That’s right mate, the cam sensor read out on the laptop wasn’t matching the advance that the VVT map was asking for, even though the VVT was clearly working (you can feel the difference big time when the VVT isn’t working). I’m not sure if the cam sensor actually does anything in terms of how the engine runs though because my setup is all open loop. 👍

no grease on the release bearing, you want nothing inside the bellhousing, if it gets on the friction plate it will screw it up, ask my mate Jon Wallis!! Putting grease on the starter pinion too, I would free-up, but no dab of grease.

I do have a vice. It's at the back of 'Heidi's garage. I did actually try putting the clutch arm in the vice (off camera) but still couldn't get the drill bit to touch it. Im guessing its been treated to harden it??? 🤔

@@andrewbranford2032 Great idea mate BUT with all the masking I would need to do I'd rather just roll it on under there. The chassis rails were stone chipped before paint anyway so I could probably get a nice even textured finish on the areas that need it with a roller. I would obvs hit the areas with a wire brush on a drill first, then maybe some kurust, then epoxy, then roll on 2 pack olympic blue. 👍
