I have a tankard too but mines a lot less fancy, it’s got a kinda ear shaped handle and no engravings and I’ve never polished it because I never realized pewter was shiny, it’s a dull almost lead color but it’s got nice thick walls and is solid enough to bash someone’s head without it breaking It’s a good mug

Yes, placing the shilling at the bottom of the tankard was a myth. Can you imagine what would happen to the recruiting sergeant if he tried that in an inn full of the man's friends. Another one which is also a myth is that when a man would go to pay for the drinks the sergeant would offer to pay for them instead and give the man the money. The sergeant is then supposed to tell the officer the man has taken the king's shilling and is therefore enlisted. Again this would not happen. The enlisted man would have to voluntarily enlist or it was not legal. Interestingly I know the Royal Air Force used to pay those who enlisted the what was the equivalent amount to the king's shilling in the early 70s. Anyway, myth or not I love the idea of the King's Shilling Tankard. Turns out they are sold on Amazon. Guess what I want for Christmas.

Since pewter can be made of different metals; what exactly is pure pewter?
@pacificcoastpiper3949
@pacificcoastpiper3949 Жыл бұрын
Pewter (/ˈpjuːtər/) is a malleable metal alloy consisting of tin (85-99%), antimony (approximately 5-10%), copper (2%), bismuth, and sometimes silver.[1] Copper and antimony (and in antiquity lead) act as hardeners, but lead may be used in lower grades of pewter, imparting a bluish tint. Pewter has a low melting point, around 170-230 °C (338-446 °F), depending on the exact mixture of metals.[2][3] The word pewter is probably a variation of the word spelter, a term for zinc alloys (originally a colloquial name for zinc).[4]
