Go back about 50 years when "art deco" poles were used for traffic lights.

Client preference. There's a design equation for minimum number of sides in relation to the flat-to-flat diameter. The design code also says round tubes of similar size have greater fatigue resistance than multi-sided. Ref: AASHTO 2015 LRFD Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires & Traffic Signals, Section 5.6.2 and Commentary.

@@joeg464, depending on the mills applied/adhered yes and even longer. 40 years is a minimum expectancy. For example. A light pole, piling, bolts or boat trailers that are exposed to the elements you can expect about that or even less. For something that is not exposed to the elements you can expect to have 80 years +.

Well technically speaking, most galvanized poles are able to last for up to 70 years before the rust eats away at the steel. Where I live, we got some 50 year old street lighting poles and the only thing that's happened to them is light surface rusting. This is because the poles (including the one in this video) go through hot-dipped galvanizing processes. Also note that galvanizing doesn't have an impact on the tensile strength of steel.

They top out at about 22/hr at my work. Its a pain in the ass of a machine to run. Much more difficult to run than the brake or the plasma. Brakes have a huge learning curve, but not in this line of work, specifically.

It is not anywhere near strong enough to be able to support the weights and withstand the wind and impacts that are called for in the specs for these signal poles.

because steel is heavy, and expensive, galvanizing is even MORE expensive, resulting in a car that costs more, and uses more gas, causing it to be more expensive to run. and if it catches fire results in everything nearby dying, including the fire fighters who come to rescue the person in the car. also difference circumstances, a TRAFFIC LIGHT, a low stress, and stationary life kept more protected from salt than say, the bottom of your car which constantly gets salt, and rocks, and other road detritus kicked into it, zinc is soft it scratches easy, wearing off the protective coating, it deteriorates faster in the presence of salt and excessive moisture, and the moment you get one weak spot, it spreads. all of these combined lead to galvanized metal being a terrible choice for basically anywhere in a car.

Cars began using galvanized steel in the 1980s. Different manufacturers at different times. Cars used to rust a lot quicker before that. It is difficult to paint galvanized steel, the paint just doesn’t stick. So they had to figure out how to paint it before they could use it for the body panels. I believe they did this by electrostatically charging the paint and panels so they were attracted to each other. Galvanizing doesn’t last forever but it does last a lot longer than non galvanized steel.

Modern cars are designed to be weak in certain spots because it's safer in a crash. If you hit a brick wall but your car hasn't dented, then you're probably dead because your internal organs got the entire impact.

Porsche 944s are galvanized. The reason they don’t galvanize cars is twofold. 1. Galvanized steel is harder to paint. 2. Galvanized steel lasts a lot longer and the auto industry is notorious for planned obsolescence.

Adding bends increases the pole's rigidity. Long round steel pipe would bend like a noodle.
