A brief one-off mechanics video discussing how exactly item drops and item discovery work. Part of the research I did for an upcoming video that I thought I'd shared. Link to spreadsheet with calculator and drop rates: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
I think there is an error on the numbers I showed in the video for the titanite lizards, but the point still remains.

I didn't feel it warranted a full segment of this video, but amusingly enough there are a few enemies that have all of their drops affected by luck. I think the only 2 are Pinwheel's boss fight, with rate of 33/33/34 for father/mother/child and Kirk's invasion which has 67 for nothing and 33 for the sword and shield (2 checks, similar to the darkwraiths with Dark Hand). I'm pretty sure the game truncates values at some point when it steps through this calculation, and if it does so after dividing the base rate by your discovery, that technically means you have a smaller chance to get the sword or shield at 410 discovery as it rounds to 80/243, or 32.92% instead of 33%. It actually bounces up and down a few hundredths of a percent depending on the rounding, maxing out at 33.07% at 198 discovery (8 humanity). For Pinwheel, it's similar, but at 410 you get 83/243 odds or 34.16% for Mask of the Child. If you want to play around with having maxed out discovery, you'll need to download a debug copy of the game and go into game -> gamerule -> items lottery-related and change the middle variable from 2.0 (i.e., 200 discovery) to 1000 (where it maxes out, go left as you can set it to 0 and then once more will raise it to max). This is also why the ring and helmet don't stack, as it checks to see if the variable is in effect and sets a game state / special effect rather than directly adding item discovery to the character. Maybe I'll do a playthrough one weekend for a stream playing with 100000 item discovery for fun.

@dontthrow6064
@dontthrow6064 Ай бұрын
There isn't a big jump in "drop chance" at max item discovery necessarily, notice how you said item discovery twice, it's a bit confusing what you wanted to say. The 1st humanity gives 45% of the item discovery you can get in total from humanity, and the next 9 give roughly around 6-7% each. Then the ring/symbol of avarice gives 65% of the item discovery you can get overall. The formula gives diminishing returns for the actual drop chance and what we notice are indeed the big jumps in item discovery. 10:00 for comparison chunk(1) chunk(2) slab nothing -> 8.5% 0.3% 0.2% 1 humanity only + ring -> 24% 0.9% 0.6% all -> 27.3% 1.03% 0.68% The other 9 humanity are almost negligible.

@trevthedev6134 Ай бұрын
No additional item drops unfortunately. Souls and health are a bit weird, there are 21 ‘areas’ and each ‘area’ has its own scaling for NG+ cycles (there are however only 15 scaling factors, so some areas share the same modifiers). Which is why the asylum demon has a lot more health in NG+ compared to some late game enemies. Into NG++ everything has the same factor each cycle. I think it’s 7% increases, then 8%, etc up to NG+6 but not sure of that number outright

Honestly, good that farming is not required to get all achievements as much as in DS3. With those rates and without glitches, it is probably faster to speedrun the game to get the fixed drops or just stay at nearly max level of upgrade. Also, is the system similar to what is in DS2/3 and ER?
@trevthedev6134
@trevthedev6134 Ай бұрын
Im not sure about ds2, but I think for 3 and Elden ring the formula of Fextralife is correct: (Base Drop Rate * Discovery) / ((Base Drop Rate * Discovery) + 900). Base drop rate is the percentage given as the percent * 1000, so an item with a 10% rate has a drop rate of 100, while item discover is divided by 100 versus what your stat screen shows (400 = 4, for example). Funnily enough it comes out exactly the same in both formulas if we’re talking about something with a rate of 900 for nothing and 100 for an item, but you have a much better chance in Ds3 and Elden ring against enemies that have multiple drop types, not even considering the fact that ds3 rolls for each drop separately so you can get 6+ items from a few enemies of you get really lucky.

So i have a question with the Lizards in the Great Hollow that i have never been able to find the answer to. Do each of the lizards have the same chance to drop a slab, or do they incrimentally get more likely the more you kill? Im pretty sure there is some belief that if you kill all 10 Lizards, then you are guaranteed a Slab. Is this actually true or is it still just a roll? Furthermore, once you get a slab (lets say on the 2nd Lizard you kill) does that remove the Slabs from the other item pools so youre only able to collect 1 in the Great Hollow? I ask because if each Lizard keeps the slab in their pool, could you technically save scum so that every single Lizard dropped a Slab? (For PS+ users it would be uploading to cloud and redownloading etc and PC i believe you can just replace the save file in the folders) Im curious about these things bwcause Ive never been able to find a proper answer.

Well I can answer question 2 of whether you're eventually guaranteed a slab or not, cuz I didn't get any slabs from the great hollow lizards until like my 3rd playthrough despite killing all 10 each time
@trevthedev6134
@trevthedev6134 Ай бұрын
Sadly not. If you look at the spreadsheet linked, the great hollow crystal lizards have item lot ids of 33000000 and 33000001 (called ‘underground lake crystal lizard’). There is a column called cumulate lot point 1 that determine if successive kills of an enemy type will increase your odds of a drop. If you look at ID 26500000, which are the necromancers, you’ll see this flagged as 1 for the nothing tag and the rate for skull lanterns. I’m not 100% sure as to how this exactly works, but I think it might both decrease the nothing and increase the drop rate? If I remember probability correctly I think you have a 32ish percent chance of getting a slab at max discovery if you kill all 10 lizards. Pretty sure you can also get multiple slabs, but the odds are like 1% for 2 and much much smaller for more than that.
@trevthedev6134
@trevthedev6134 Ай бұрын
I dunno about save scumming. I’m 99% sure that the drop is calculated a little bit after the enemy dies (which is why there’s that little delay before you can see if there is a drop) and is probably tied to your system clock in some fashion to roll for a drop? I’d imagine that you can probably save scum if I had to guess but can’t say for sure. I hope so I’ll test it out later today!

A way to explain item discovery: have an enemy with 900 clear marbles (nothing) and 100 blue marbles (item) for 1000 total marbles, that equals 100/1000 = 10% drop chance. With 200 discovery, 100 blue marbles is now 200 but we still have 900 clear marbles for 1100 total marbles. Instead of 10% * 2 = 20% we actually have 200/1100 = 18.18%. With multiple items that can drop, always stay same weighting towards each other because you are simply expanding the total amount of marbles and not reducing the clear marbles.
@trevthedev6134
@trevthedev6134 Ай бұрын
Technically speaking, from the games perspective, it actually does divide the total number of clear marbles (using you example) and doesn’t increase the total number of blue marbles. The math does work out the same either way, but it’s a distinction that I want to make clear in the event that it was carried over to ds2 or 3 if/when I look at those games. I understand ds2s system is way more convoluted than ds1 haha.

@@trevthedev6134 This is the actual way it performs the calculation. (item1_rate * item_discovery) / itemlot( (nothing * 100) + (item1_rate * item_discovery) + (item2_rate * item_discovery) + (item3_rate * item_discovery) ) Itemlot means only 1 of the items in that lot can drop, example BKH and Shield can't both be dropped at same time, and iterates through all drops in each "lot". Nothing is multiplied by 100, base discovery, because it has a "enable luck" flag of 1. If "enable luck" is set to 0 then it multiplies item rate with item discovery. Use this google sheet for reference. (docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KukblWL61We64-gNIyaAShga9h8RTXYmyFs98eQhY4E/edit#gid=1621557847)

@@level12lobster8 That's what I was finding when starting, but I'm 99.99% sure that if enable luck is set to 1 then it is affected by your discovery. I'm not a coder but it wouldn't make sense to me that a '0' would be a positive flag for a calculation in the game. Again, the end result is the same (either adjusting the nothing lot down or increasing the item lots up), but if we do the adjustment to the 'nothing' it's way less calculations than if each item lot was adjusted at runtime.
@level12lobster8
@level12lobster8 Ай бұрын
@@trevthedev6134 It iterates through each itemlot, defaults to nothing (no drop) if they all fail. It repeats this for every itemlot the enemy drop table has. Upgrade materials is a "lot", each armor slot is a "lot", weapons/shields/catalyst is a "lot", consumables are a "lot", etc. You can receive 1 item for each lot. Reason it doesn't adjust "nothing" down is so that there is never a 100% drop chance. "enable luck" function is to disable luck, not enable it. So 0 means do nothing (use item discovery, default behavior) and 1 would disable luck (use base discovery 100, overriding discovery). Should probably have been named "override luck" to better convey its use.

Ok so if a batwing Demon has 2% chance of dropping the demon spear at 100 item discovery adding 1 humanity yields 50 more . By my math you know have a 3% chance right ? And at 410 you have an 8.2% chance ? (Picked this enemy because it drops only 1 thing or nothing making the odds easier to calculate ...darkwraiths obscure the odds because of the possibility of multiple items with different drop rates dropping together like a chunk and dark hand (latter is 2% if 1 item) what would the drop rate be if it dropped with a chunk .
@trevthedev6134
@trevthedev6134 16 күн бұрын
Here’s the math behind a 2% drop: At 100 discovery: 2 drops / 98 nothing (2/100 = 2%) At 150 discovery: 2 drops / (98/1.5) = 65 nothing (2/67) = 2.98% At 410: 2 drops / (98/4.1) = 24 nothing (2/26) = 7.7% So it’s pretty close to just multiplying base drop rate times you discovery for enemies that only have one drop, but ever so slightly worse.

Red Titanite Slabs are the rarest things on earth. There is only ONE in the the game (Lost Izalith) and their drop is ultra-rare. AND the respawning droppers (Chaos Eaters) are only 4... not 10 or 11 like the Darkwraiths Fortunately Fire and Chaos weapons are meh, many enemies are fire-resistant, Occult or Magic (as Enchanted) weapons are way powerful as they scale with Fth or Int and enemies are LESS resistant to magic damage (occult and divine = magic too... and that's equally important... not only how much damage you make, but if you go through the enemy's defense, otherwise power is nothing if you hit a brick wall!!!) , so you can live without red-slabs. By the way: you can farm to 99 humanities. Why did they cap the Chaos weapons to 10 is beyond me. The error maybe is to let merchants sell humanities! Make humanities more rare, make Chaos-Weapons stronger.. that had to be the right way to go. They removed the Chaos factor from the Chaos weapons. As Chaos Servant I DEMAND more powerful Chaos Weapons !!! ffs! It's derespectful. It seems that creators watched to much Harry Potter... and gave more credit to magic babystuffs and neglected true, sane, visceral Chaos-Power. Result: in my experience if your Stats are "smaller 40" in STR / DEX / FTH / INT (basics) you want Lightning Weapons! Once your stats reach the 40 (or 50) barrier in the basics, you want a weapon which scales with your stats. You can have some fun with Chaos Weapons too, but for the reasons given above, the fun is limited.
