Seventy million people tuned in to watch America's first televised presidential debate in 1960. They were met with a well-prepared, well-dressed JFK who outshone his opponent, Richard Nixon.

Actually, both candidates did very well in this debate, content-wise. They were polite and made good points and answered the questions fully and well. Nixon's problem was that he did not understand how his clothes and sweating would appear on TV. He actually looked terrible compared with the handsome, youthful Kennedy. Nixon looked like a cheap used-car salesman in this debate and, despite the fact that he looked better in subsequent debates with Kennedy, it is usually the FIRST debate that matters most. (This was especially true at that time, as this was the first ever televised debate between presidential candidates.)

John Kennedy appeared relaxed and at ease, I've read that he suffered terrible back pain much of the time, yet somehow was able to overcome this despite all of his campaigning. He was there for the people, he cared about people and and the nation, and was a truly Great President.
@johnhaladay5541
@johnhaladay5541 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, please. He overcame it by using steroids and other powerful drugs that his doctors and a compliant media concealed from the people. Furthermore, his "bad back" didn't prevent him from engaging in his numerous bedtime dalliances, which was a disgrace to the dignity of the office. And Kennedy was not a great president. He wasn't a bad one, but great? People say that because he was assassinated and they want to romanticize his image and fantasize about what he may or may not have accomplished had he been reelected. His tragic death doesn't make him great.

I would take Kennedy over all but 3 or 4 of the 11 presidents who have 'served' during my lifetime (I was born when LBJ was president and he is certainly NOT among the 3 or 4). But anyway, there's a great quote from Christopher Hitchens (regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis) that always comes to mind whenever I see fawning praise for Kennedy. It goes something like this . . . ''I will never forget where I was or what I was doing the day JFK almost killed me''. 😆😆😆
@michaelterrell5061

@@johnhaladay5541 Alright so firstly his overcoming of severe back pain with the use of drugs given to him by professionals medical experts is not a blight on him. His affairs in the office were not new to the office and did not disgrace anything, politicians in the U.S had been doing such things for quite some time, just ask Thomas Jefferson or Benjamin Franklin. Lastly bud presidency is consistently ranked by political scientists, political philosophers, and historians as being one of the best presidencies in American history. His handling of the Cuban missile crisis, embarrassing of the civil rights movement, and social and economic policies are all considered some of the greatest instances of political maneuvering during judgement in American presidential history. So this smear campaign of yours is ridiculous, he was a great president and saying otherwise is just plain ignorant.
@freeguy77

@@johnhaladay5541 I'll say this about the celebrated Cuba Missile Crisis and how Kennedy handled it. One bad move to incite the USSR, and the world would have been engulfed in a holocaust never seen before on Earth, mass murdering Billions! That was not the only good thing he did in his short time as president. But first, about his numerous bedtime exercises, his bad back did affect that part of his life! He usually could not be in the man-above position, and preferred to be below his partner. Besides that minor point, you and most others have NEVER thoroughly researched the astonishing amount of legislation or important treaties passed in his 34 months! His most important domestic legislation passed in his time was the 1962 Trade Expansion Act, lowering tariffs worldwide, helping poorer people afford foreign goods without the added tariff (import tax) expense. He also got the 1963 Equal Pay Act passed, helping women. He got increases in mental health and other health issues, and education increased. His proposed tax cut was later passed in 1964 in his honor. He got the Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty passed in the hawkish Senate, 80-14 in Sep. 1963! Many were against it, but his persuasive points in limiting nuclear war won them over, with his newfound desire for peaceful co-existence with both the USSR and Cuba, thereby ending the risky Cold War and its mentality, with its chance of a nuclear war destroying the world. His superb Peace Speech on Jun 10, 1963, at American University is a measure on how much he grew in office from a typical war-hawk, to a man on a mission for peace, and prosperity. Most importantly, he rejected the typical radical left-wing points that people in that philosophy were proposing. Adlai Stevenson, the 1952 and 1956 Dem presidential candidate was one such Dem liberal he did not approve of in his domestic policies proposed. Kennedy never thought of himself as a liberal, and despised their philosophy! He was the last Dem conservative president!

I might mention on the radio audience, both candidates scored well in content. Ironically, the visual conveys the opposite.

They were also both smart and prepared for the office in that way unlike some of the creatures that came after them. JFK was maybe a little less prepared as was recounted by Nixon after a meeting he had with then president Kennedy after the Bay of Pigs fiasco. JFK was crestfallen and Nixon said he had never seen him like that before. He actually summoned Nixon to the White House that day to ask him to ask the other republicans not to kick him while he was down and Nixon says he pledged his support to him thst day. They even had a frank discussion on the subject only after John offered to walk Nixon to his car which served as a ruse to get away from LBJ who was in the room with them before that.

There's something that wasn't touched on (or shown) here (it's visible if you watch the whole debate) that did way more damage - "Presence in the room" resulting from "Body Language." Nixon is spending more time looking at Kennedy than the camera. That communicates on a more subtle level - that's "the leader" to others watching. When ever new people walk into a room they're trying figure/feel out who's the leader - it's usually the one the most people there are looking at. That person has "Presence."

FDR in 1944. JFK in 1960. FDR never really had civil rights on his agenda, which was becoming a major problem by the time 1960 rolled around.

Never knew JFK lived in the Bronx (0:20). I learned something interesting more years ago than I can remember; namely that radio listeners thought Nixon won the debates, while TV viewers thought Kennedy did.

In a nutshell, had Nixon won... the workd would have been completely different. Nixon would have succeeded in the Bay of Pigs Invasion, dethroned Castro, wounding the Soviet Union, boosting American morale. Consequently, there is no Berlin Wall, no Cuban Missils Crisis, and Kruschev begins backpedalling in the cold war. Nixon probably scraps some New Deal welfare programs, given the surging economy renders them useless. This helps boost the economy and repay debts, so the 70s malaise and dropping the gold standard is averted. Nixon visits China in Feb 1963, opening diplomacy with the Soviet Union. By pitting China against Russia, Nixon gained leverage in the Cold War, set the stage for China's own thawing of communism. Nixon doubles down on Vietnam forces earlier, striking while the iron is hot. This, combined with his China visit, led to victory in the Vietnam War, right on the eve of the 1964 elections. A more moderate version of the Civil Rights Act is passed during nixon's 1964 State of the Union, one without federal intervention provisions. This move handcuffs future hate speech legislation, solidifies black support for the GOP. After winning reelection in a landslide, Nixon announces his intention to put a man on the moon before his term is up. Mission accomplished the summer of 67. The Cold War ends in 1971 with the Soviet Union's fall.

A questionable analysis. In September 1960 (when this debate took place) American families owning a TV color set were no more than 500,000-700,000, (no more than 1% of spectators) and just NBC started to regularly broadcast in color only after this debate (November 1960). So, just a very small percentage of families could see Kennedy's blue suit and Nixon's pale green jacket. Most of TV audience watched a black-and-white debate. Anyway, it is true that Kennedy's TV performance was much better than Nixon's one, even in black&white

I might add that in a debate, a candidate also runs against public expectations, not just the other candidate. Nixon was well-known to be one of the best debators in the nation - appearances notwithstanding, the fact that JFK actually managed to hold his own on content, that dramatically raised his profile. Besides that, I believe JFK also had a strong campaigner in running mate LBJ - he made a difference in holding support, particularly in the south. Moreover, Nixon's aim to campaign in all fifty states (in two months) meant wasting energy in solid states not projected to flip. Kennedy focused all his energy on campaigning the swing states. Given how close the vote came, not to mention allegations by President Ike of voter fraud, just reverse one of these factors, it's safe to say Nixon would have been president.
