I recall the news reports of the day, my favorite was the great Paul Harvey who said "There were about 20 witnesses, none of whom saw anything".

That’s not entirely true. The witnesses stated they all saw the same thing, 6-10 men in yellow coats and Russian style hats.. they just didn’t see any faces... they were smart in dressing all the same

As Dave Letterman quipped in his monologue after the Castellano hit, "Well, folks, the FBI released a statement today asking any witnesses to the Paul Castellano hit to step forward. Can you imagine the response to the FBI's request: "If anyone has an information about the murder, please step forward and end your life."

Thanks Mooney for anther great post. When I'm in the city I stay a few blocks away on E 50th. I've been to Sparks many times. I freely admit the first time I went was because of the Castellano hit but I kept returning because the food and atmosphere are excellent. I hope that all of the employees and owners of Sparks will survive and be there when I return, good people! Thanks again Mooney and keep the videos coming!

I was on my way to pick up my daughter at acting lessons and turned down East 46th as I did a few times a week and saw the bodies by the black car, the cops had not arrived yet but as I stood and watched they showed up. . The reason why Paul wanted to kill not only John Gotti, but his crew was mainly because Angelo Ruggiero was recorded on tapes about everything that was going in especially about Drugs and Paul wanted to Angelo to hand over the tapes and refused. You should mention that Paul Castellano was HATED by the Rank & File of his Family!....That made it easier for Gotti to know it would be a popular move on his part.
@bullwinklejmoos
@bullwinklejmoos 3 жыл бұрын
Before Gambino died, he named Castellano and Aiello Neil Dellacroce as bosses. Castellano started to neglect the Rank & File, while Dellacroce was definitely attuned to them. Gotti looked up to Dellacroce and thought that Castellano needed to go. Dellacroce ,honored the wishes of Gambino and put a halt tonangebendere actions. When Dellacroce passed away from cancer and Castellano did not show up to his wake, Gotti was furious and since his mentor was no longer around to keep him in check, orchestrated the infamous hit. That kinda covers that in a nutshell. But I think you know that part, it’s just that others may not be aware.
@balancedactguy
@balancedactguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@bullwinklejmoos Yes, what you have posted is all true. Another factor was the Rank & File resented the fact that Paul put very little time in "On the Streets", and did not have a good understanding of how to keep the "Street Guys" content. As a result they did not feel Paul deserve his spot as the new Boss which Dellcroce clearly did deserve. I did hear that Carlo Gambino did give Dellacroce control over some very lucrative businesses as a way to smooth things over a bit for passing him over to put Paul in power. In any case. Paul sealed his own fate.

He was mostly only hated by the Bergen Fish Club (Gotti) crew. He had a lot of heavy-hitter loyalists, too, like Nino Gaggi, Roy DeMeo, Westies Irish gang, Tommy Bilotti, and some more. The Bergen Club was terrified of those guys.
@balancedactguy
@balancedactguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@truthteller4442 From what I heard Paul was still hated in general by the rank and file. There is really no way Gotti, who only controlled one crew could have whacked Paul without knowing the other crews would go along....otherwise all those " loyalists" would have whacked him and his supporters out and installed another Boss.

You were parked exactly across from the light pole. His body was laying to the left of the light pole if you're standing in the street looking on to the sidewalk. He was not shot in front of the doors of the restaurant. It's certain camera angles from the sidewalk that makes it look like he's down there right next to that awning but that's not the case. And afterwards they stopped at Bobby Van's Steakhouse for a celebratory drink and some appetizers just east on 46th street at the corner of Park Avenue which you passed while on your way over to Sparks. Bobby Van's Steakhouse is located at 230 Park Avenue in the Helmsley Building. Right where the traffic drives through the building, you can't miss it and they have great 30 day dry aged steaks and awesome bartenders serving perfectly mixed drinks. In fact the back room at Bobby Van's was always one of Bruce Cutler's favorite meeting places for conferences with clients and potential clients.

The owner of the Steak House said right after the incident in an interview, that there was no reservation for Castellano and that they didnt know, that he was coming nor did they know, if the Steak house was even Castellanos destination. So is it really true, that they were meeting at the Steak house? Cause they could have simply just parked there and went somewhere else.

Also, i do agree about ratting. But sammy has explained why he did it and it does make sense why he did. You can watch for yourself and decide but ggotti wanted sammy to take the blame and go down for everything so that gotti could walk free. And also the hundreds of hours of tapes they got gotti talking on in the ladys appartment above the club he backstabbex sammy. And sammy was nothing but loyal to the family and gotti for many yearz. Joe Coffey, the NYPD official assigned to La Cosa Nostra NY claims Gotti and Gravano were not there. That it’s folklore to make them more mythological and they really were. Either way, this was one of the most carefully and error free hits in the history of the mafia in the USA.

Coffey says a lot of things to discredit what wiseguys say. He has a deep hatred for them lol. He greatly exaggerates his stories so I'd take anything he says with a grain of salt.

Didn't Anthony Scala's gun jam on Castellano and Carneglia quickly took over and riddled him? Wasn't Joe Watts the fourth backup shooter? I heard an off-duty Corrections Officer was present, but decided to not use his weapon that day, due to the swift ferocity of the shooters.

Yeah I remember this because me, my brother and belated brother-in-law was just coming from the westside highway near 30th street next thing I hear and see ambulances and squad car racing up on the upper level of the westside highway. And we were coming from Yonkers where I got my DJ mixer I became a DJ the night Paul castellano got murdered it was a Friday night as well.

Drugs really did create a lot of rifts and wars in various mafias. The old guard, like Castellano and Angelo Bruno (head of the Philly Mob) among others, didn't want their guys taking part in the drug trade and trafficking which really started to ramp up in the 70s and 80s. Some younger guys didn't like that, so they went after the bosses.

The reason Gotti got away with it is because amongst the 5 families Paul castellano looked down on the rest of the families and even those in his own Gambino family. He saw himself as a ruthless businessman rather than a street thug (which is silly) and it was silly because everyone secretly wished.him dead but no one could technically do it. It took someone so audacious to do it someone like Gotti. But as revenge the other mob families on the commission blew up gottis then right hand man Frank decicco who was the prime organizer and one the hit team.
