From Robin Hood to damning accusations of murder, tyranny and tactical ineptitude; history and popular culture have not been kind to England’s ‘Bad King John’. But just how much is fact and how much is fiction?
In a bid to clear the muddied waters, King John’s faithful fool and personal assistant, Max Tobin (strangely never before mentioned in any historical text), looks back at the evidence against the real-life medieval monarch.
Written, presented and edited by Max Tobin
Director of Photography & Philip II: Dillon Steele
Executive Producer & King John: Howard Timberlake
Music by George Demetriou

I have long maintained that Richard was the worst king of England, not John, precisely because of his abscence and the massive taxation to support it.

Exactly. John was actually an able administrator. Richard ignored the kingdom, using it only as a source of revenue for his campaigning. I'm sure the barons loved this. John would have tried to rein then in which would have contributed to the rebellion.

Then you are wrong. Richard was undeniably a bad king, I’ll give you that, but to say he was the worst is ridiculous. Edward II, Henry VI, Mary I, Charles I and James II are all FAR worse monarchs then Richard. Richard never lost a war or lost any territory, even if he did bankrupt the country. Meanwhile, all of the monarchs I just mentioned bankrupt the country WHILE losing wars and territory. Also John is still worse than Richard. John kept the country bankrupt, and he lost the entire Angevin Empire, which at least Richard was able to maintain.

This was well done and thoroughly enjoyable! Cortez wrote back to Spanish Queen Isabella that conquering the Aztecs and their gold was a done deal, when nothing was farther from the truth. The Aztecs kept sending them deeper into the jungle where they were decimated by wild tribes of Indians. Less than twenty years ago, archaeologists found dung pits and upon scrutinizing the ancient dung they found the Spanish had been cannibalized by the Aztecs. Not to forget the few who got away crossed the United States from West to East, looking for gold until they wound up in Florida and the Atlantic ocean. What the Indians did get were horses! It took human dung pits found hundreds of years later to prove wrong Cortez' written history of "events" against the Aztecs.

*UK Fact Time:* 1. Anglo Saxon King of Mercia, Offa Rex, minted coins (756 ad) with the following Arabic inscriptions 'la ilaha ill lall lah, Muhammad rasool Allah' meaning there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad is His messenger. Coin is in the British Museum. 2. British army armoured vehicle named after Salah Ad Din, the great Muslim Sultan of Egypt, the liberator of Jerusalem. 2. Around 4 Million Muslim soldiers, travelled to Europe and fought for the British Empire, during the World War I. 500,000 in WW2. 3. King John of England (1199-1216) sent an embassy to the Almohad caliph al-Nāsir (1199-1213) in which John offered to convert to Islam and to hold the kingdom of England as a tributary of the Muslim caliph. 3. Top 10 new born baby names in England is Muhammad (No 1). 4. According to The Encyclopaedia Britannica: “Most of the classical literature that spurred the European Renaissance was obtained from translations of Arabic manuscripts in Muslim libraries.” (1984), Vol. 15, p. 646 5. Did you know, in the 12th century, furious with the archbishop of Canterbury, England's King Henry II threatened to forsake Christianity for Islam. 6. He might have been a staunch protector of the British Empire, but the British Prime Minister had a love of the Orient and Islam" Independent, Sunday 28 December 2014 11:30 7. The interesting geographical wrinkle about the crown jewels episode is that The Wash was much bigger than it is now. It seems likely to me that the treasure, if it was around, was discovered when the Fens were drained and land reclaimed some 500+ years later. Someone's probably quietly melted it all down and got rich in the process.

It alternately amuses and depresses me, the knowledge that we really and truly know so little about what is truly going on in the world around us; so how can we ever think that history is fixed and set in stone (literally, as well as figuratively) Life is just one continuous game of "grapevine". But, videos like this one, are enjoyable and I appreciate how they present a balance.

I searched for ages to try to get to the bottom of the Magna Carta story and found that the Pope had outlawed the teaching/effects of Alfred the Great's Common Law in Churches - same rules for everyone - and only Canon Law was thence to be taught/applied... hence, the clause ''The church shall be free'' in Magna Carta doesn't mean ''muh free conscience'', but rather, that naughty priests would no longer face trial before the King's Court, but would be viewed far away in Rome, perhaps in secret... and we've seen how, rather recently, that came back to bite the Church's bottom. ruining trust in faith and law. Also, some called King John similar mean names mockers and scoffers might have used on Jesus, if you think about it - Lackland; Softsword - but he nevertheless stopped the 2nd invasion of England by France. Not too shabby. And, he was - temporarily - ex-communicated, for defending our sovereignty... great courage😇💖

You missed the starting point, Richard's capture by the Austrians on the way back from Crusade, resulting in a ransom more or less equal to the capital base of the country. This became the core of the National Debt, which gave the City autonomy initially from the Crown and later Parliament. When it was finally paid off in the early years of this century, it didn't suit the likes of Sunak at all, and many see the 2008 crash as a raid by the hedging firms on the Treasury, whose bale-out of the banks recreated the debt. Whence the huge dislike of most of the population at being ruled, incompetently and without mandate, by one of the robbers.

Revisionists aren't woke, it's the de-constructers and re-framers you need to watch out for, whatever their hair colour may be. That whole 1619 project has been quite useful though, given the hundreds of debunking and disambiguation videos it has prompted. The net effect has been a much clearer understanding of those issues, and a spike in views for the likes of Thomas Sowell. A consumate revisionist in the true sense, challenging acounts that really needed revision.

It's nowhere near as funny as the main character believes. The sound quality is also terible, exacerbated by the horribly loud and ugly music.
