Video info: Kings of Leon is a band consisting of the three brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared Followill and their nephew Matthew Followill. They’re a rock band that formed in Nashville, Tennessee back in 99 and has created a legacy for being one of the biggest rock bands of the 00s and 2010s. In today’s video i thought i’d look at how they created one of their biggest hits, Closer. A melancholic, effect-drenched and incredibly satisfying song that features one of my favorite guitar riffs from the band. We’ll talk about the song’s odd sound effects, epic guitar riffs and their set of compositional techniques. This is Closer, by Kings of Leon.

I'm glad you made this video. I think this new album will give the Kings the credit they deserve. Of course, after they 'sold out' with Only By The Night there was kinda a whole ignoring of their 2010s output as a result, but really liking what I hear so far. Hope this video is the start of a positive reprisal of their work in the wider music nerd media.

Nathan's mastery of stumbling into the melody, using the "dotted kick-and-snare pattern" seems to be Nathan's signature move. I think it's stunning what he can evoke from a drum kit. I've struggled to describe his use of bursts of melodic drumming. This description comes as close as I've heard. All of the members of KOL deserve the utmost respect.

I've watched their show in 2019 on Brazil's lollapalooza. The show was great, but it was so "rainy" and Interlagos was so full of mud that, cause I was sitting on a hill to watch the show with my cousin, I feel down and ended up hitting an random lady that was missing the action cause of her phone. That "I'd like to punch the people who are using cellphones in concerts" phrase it's something I can relate more than I would like. Saw the notification and instantly remembered that show, I'll be sending this video to my cousin Igor to share your amazing content Lie, thank you.

@@LieLikesMusic Hey what's up, man!!! Yeah that was a really great lineup, for sure- but I think Dave Ghrol's entry in the band did well to overshadow the awesome lineup that preceded with Nick Lucero on 🥁 circa 2000. To me, the shows from a this time were epic, super tight, yet still kinda loose, and a little bit more raw than the 2002 lineup, therefore I like the 2000 lineup just a wee bit better. Anyways, love the channel and everything you've done, esp on Josh Homme, John Frusciante, The Mars Volta, and Tool. A video on TV on the Radio would be interesting, just to put that out there. Keep up the good work.

I admit, I was really hoping you would explore how KoL wrote their riffs generally and not just do a breakdown of one song. But this breakdown was really good. I would love it if you could devote some more time to their other tracks and how they evolved from a three chord adrenaline rock band to a more complex (and at times much more simple) sound. Or just anything at all with Kings of Leon.
